Slavery is a very sensitive subject. Many people are not able to even read about it without feeling offended. However, I thought that in reading Ama, it was actually very easy to read and understand.
I believe that reading non-fiction gives the reader more of a personal feel. There were millions of slaves that were transported across the Atlantic. In Reversing Sail, it gives you the straight facts that they know about the people, the counties and routes that were taken. Most people would find it boring when reading about the straight facts and information as if they were reading from an Encyclopedia. I believe that reading non-fiction is great to a point, it is better to link it with a personal or fictional story.

“The Boat”, narrated by a Mid-western university professor, Alistar MacLeod, is a short story concerning a family and their different perspectives on freedom vs. tradition. The mother pushes the son to embrace more of a traditional lifestyle by taking over the fathers fishing business, while on the other hand the father pushes the son to live more autonomously in an unconstrained manner. “The Boat” focuses on the father and how his personality influences the son’s choice on how to live and how to make decisions that will ultimately affect his life. In Alistair MacLeod’s, “The Boat”, MacLeod suggest that although dreams and desires give people purpose, the nobility of accepting a life of discontentment out weighs the selfishness of following ones own true desires. In the story, the father is obligated to provide for his family as well as to continue the fishing tradition that was inherited from his own father. “Slavery is an American embarrassment” (Breen/Innes 3). The history of slavery can be very complex. While most people believe that slaves did not have the chance to advance, Breen and Innes prove that theory wrong. At least slaves had the opportunity to purchase their freedom on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Breen and Innes also point out that the relationships between blacks and whites are also not how we originally thought they were. They were not one sided relationships; they could be considered co-dependent relationships.
I do not agree with Richler opinion when he says fiction is a waste of time. Reading a piece of information or any novel contribute to human being educational enrichment, never a waste of time. Fiction movies are entertaining, I enjoy science fiction movies because they are interesting and mostly because they are short and easy to follow.
I have previously watched movies and read books on this kind of subject which always resulted in the cruelty of blacks, or the poverty and separation in schools and communities. I was not aware that with the rise of Islam and the conflicts between Muslims and Christians, the holding of prisoners during war and their use of slaves is what reintroduced the practice in European society which is where it began to rise. In conclusion, this book shows us that slavery is against mankind and all people are equal concerned of the race. Racism has become an wide-ranging in many of the countries mostly in northern Europe and Russia. Skin colour means nothing but just an identity. Many people use it to discriminate others whereas they got equal intelligence and sometimes the person being discriminated upon could be having sharper brains. This book also written for kids and immigrants to learned more about the past of where they lives. I recommend that every person should see the other as a partner but not as superior than the other and by that there will not be any discrimination in our society.

Emancipation brought freedom, but not approximation. The civil rights movement killed Jim Crow, but shadows remained. Affirmative Action created opportunities, but racism continues.

Men and women, both struggling to survive under the harsh conditions, the never ending labor and inhumane torture. However, the experience of slavery is far different for women than it was for men. Slave women endured the relentless agony of physical, mental and emotional abuse and exploitation.
If a non-fiction book was only filled with facts readers would quickly lose interest and not want to read it. Also, without personal opinions and anecdotes, the book would lack a purpose. Style is crucial to having a book that appeals to the reader’s attention span, and if there is no connection to the reader through the author’s personality, then this book is not successful due to the lack of a personal voice from the author.
Slavery was a condition that no human being should ever endure. It is a mechanism that shaped every aspect of everyone living at that time period. Common and the most powerful critiques of this institution was that it broke up families, resulted in poor living conditions, and shaped the lives of everyone involved from youth to their adulth
