In the short story Freak The Mighty the theme of the story is to not judge a person on what they look like. Throughout my life I have seen people being judged on how they look and I myself have been judged for the way that I look. My best friend always gets called a midget just because he is smaller than everybody else is and they always make fun of him because of his size. I have judged my teachers before because the way they look like how one of my teachers always was scowling and I thought he would be mean but he turned out to be one of the nicest teachers i've ever had. From both of those experiences I learned to not just judge someone just because of the way that they appeared.
The character Max Kane is first described as dumb and, a goon that grows an inch every day, and and brainless. If we were to judge him solely on his appearance we might think that he is a guy who might not care too much about others or anything like that. In fact when we were first introduced to Max he was in daycare and he says “I was given a nickname called “kicker” because I booted anyone who dared to touch me.” This shows that he might not like being around others and would mulch rather just be alone. Also max says that “I

never had a brain until freak came along and let me borrow his for a while.” This shows that max might be insecure about how smart he is because he calls himself dumb. However later he is always laughing and learning new things when he goes on quests with Freak. This refutes that max isn't really as dumb as he thought he was and thanks to freak he learned how to stand up for himself. The character Iggy Lee is first described as “a big hairy dude with a giant beer gut standing in the doorway.” If we were to judge him just on how he looked we would probably think that he is a big mean guy that is rude and uncaring. In fact when we first see him he says “you better come inside,” he says looking down at freak, “you and frankenstein” This shows that he might be a judgeful and rude person. Also on multiple occasions he tells his own wife to shut up. This shows that he really doesn't seem to care about others. However we see him trying to help out max my making a plan to set max free, “The plan is iggy keeps him distracted while I get you loose, now isn't that a good plan?”This refutes that Iggy isn't that bad of a person and is willing to help out when needed. The character Kevin (Freak) is first described as smart but very short for his age.
“And this little midget kid, this crippled humanoid, he actually scared you.” If we were to judge him just on the way he looked i'm sure we wouldn't think he is in middle school just because of his height. When we first see Freak he is also in daycare with max and he is pretending to be a robot because he has these shiny braces on strapped to his crooked legs. This shows that he can be nice and funny and love his life even though he is crippled. Later on in the book we see Freak and max going out on quests every day and having the best times of their lives. This proves that even though Freak is small and crippled he is still very wize and can have a life like normal kids
do. In the short story Freak The Mighty, by Rodman Philbrick, the theme of the story is to not judge people just on the way that they appear. There has been many times in all of our lives where we have judged people on how they look. I feel like we all should just try to get to know the person better before we start assuming and judging the person. I think we all can take the advice to not judge people just on the way that they look from this story.
Max and Freak relationship is very good. They both like each other and our good friends.Frea thinks of Max as his legs, so he can walk. Max thinks of Freak as his Brain, so he can think and be smart. It’s almost like they
Also, he had received a nickname during daycare Kicker.“‘Hey you! Mutt and Jeff! Frankenstein and Igor! Don’t look around, I’m talking to you, boneheads. What is this, a freak show?’”(Philbrick 29). Tony D is the one who said this quote. He and his gang ganged up on Freak and Max at the carnival and of which they ended up in the millpond. Even though Max may seem like a giant, but he is very kind hearted and cares for everyone around him. For example, when Freak dies, Max runs through everyone he sees just to get to Freak. If a doctor was in his way they would have been crushed. Metaphorically of course. Another example is when Loretta Lee was being strangled Max save her by throwing himself onto his Father.
...ane just did not know how to show this at times that were tough for him. Killer Kane still is protective, cares about Max, and wants the best for him. When Killer Kane came back to see Max when he could have been arrested was showing he cared and loved Max enough to be arrested again right when he got out of jail. Killer Kane showed that he is protective of Max when Loretta tried to untie Max and Killer Kane snapped at her to not put her hands on his son. He showed that he wanted the best for Max when he said he wanted to start a life with Max. Killer Kane just wanted Max to have the father figure he needed in his life. Killer Kane listens, suggests, defends. Is patient, loving and loyal. He would do anything for Max, He wants the best for Max, and protects Max. In the novel, Freak The Mighty by Rodman Philbrick Killer Kane is truly a loving father and he proves it.
People always say never judged a person by their cover, yet some of us still do it without even trying sometimes. I have done this on multiple occasions without really trying to judge a person. I once had an experience where I was trying out for a new club team and I saw this girl who looked really mean and scary because of the expression on her face. I always thought if I ever talk to her she would be mean, but one practice we started to talk and she wasn’t at all the person I thought she ways. It turns out that she is a nice person who just takes soccer very seriously. This just shows that we can have a certain opinion on someone by their looks, but they may be completely opposite from the way they appear. There’s this book call “Freak the Mighty” which has a good way of showing the theme of not judging a person
Society tends to misjudge people base on their appearances instead of their personality. As it’s shown on Cyrano de Bergerac story everyone misjudges people. Cyrano was ashamed of the way he looked, especially with his enormous nose that made him stand out. People didn’t care if Cyrano got his feelings hurt they thought he was a cruel person. Its bad when people tends to misjudge people without even knowing them but they just judge them by their looks instead of their personality. People shouldn’t be ashamed of the way they look and it shouldn’t stop them from accomplishing their goals and express their feelings towards the people they like.
Why are people not judged by who they are but instead what they look like? People judge people without find out who they are, what are their values, or their upbringing. Instead, they are categorized as a particular type of people based on how they appear. In Malcolm Gladwell’s essay,”Trouble Makers” he tells of how wrongful generalizations are made on a group of people or things. While in Brent Staples essay,”Just Walk on By” he tells of his personal struggled being racially profiled as an African American man. Gladwell would respond to Staples argument that he is perceived unfairly due to the generalizations that are made towards Staples.
There are much more important ideas about your life and how or what you do. One of the key is do not be involved with a bad situation. Do not judge people of how they look. There could be people who looks dirty but is not mean and others that wears nice clothes but is rude like an example from sentence 3. In the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, people judge the greasers being mean because of how they look but are not that mean and the Socs of how people believe they are amazing people because of how they look but get into trouble. Nothing will change if you want to change it or not and that is one of the most important theme because people wants to make the difference.
Everyday people are judged based on their appearance. We need to learn to look beyond a person’s physical image. In the young adult fiction piece If You Come Softly by Jacqueline Woodson, the memoir The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, and the realistic fiction novel The Silver Star by Jeannette Walls, the authors illustrate how individuals face prejudice based on their appearance, race, gender, and social class.
Many people struggle to be accepted in our world because of disabilities. Freak the Mighty, by Rodman Philbrick, is a dramatic and inspiring novel about how two boys, who are “different”, become friends and unite towards a common cause. Kevin, an eighth grader who lives with his mother Gwen, is one of the two protagonists in this extraordinary novel. Kevin is a very knowledgeable young boy who doesn't let his disability limit his abilities.
Tal explained in the article how her family suffered in their early ages and escaped some of their problems, but when they entered a new country they were introduced to new conflicts that they eventually resolved by giving up some of their valuable time and also by teaching themselves to run a business that they have passed onto their granddaughter as a privilege. The argument of this article states that society will judge you in anyway possible because of the privileges you have, but remembering what Tal included in her article saying “My appearance certainly doesn’t tell the whole story, and to assume that it does and that I should apologize for it is insulting. ”(Fortgang 2014:16). As stated in this quote, a person’s appearance will never tell you their story, you will judge them for how they look, but that way is not the correct way to judge anyone, the only way to judge a person is to not judge them at all, because every person has challenges they have to face to become who they are today.
To begin, a mechanism of discriminatory and violent systems is appearance. Appearance is the way that someone or something looks, meaning not everyone looks or acts the same by performance. In Roxane Gay’s novel, she points out that she wants acceptance for her body shape, and yet wanting to change it. Although she tried
Man by nature, judges people and things by their appearance. If a person is pleasant looking then they will be given more of a chance to express their internal self. If they are ugly, or cosmetically deformed, they usually aren't given much of a chance to show who they really are. Grotesquely ugly people are sometimes thought of as monsters, and are ostracized. Many cosmetically inferior people are afraid to go out into society. Mankind seems to be fearful of the unfamiliar and unknown. People are afraid of what they do not understand. Deformaty is something that most people can not comprehend.
The first impression you have when meeting someone is their appearance, which makes it easy to judge people based on how they
“Do not judge the book by its cover”. This is a very famous quote. But is really personal appearance not essential? (Elmer, n.d.).
Max and Freak are both very diverse from “normal” students at school, they both act, think, and learn differently than others. There are many reasons why people would chose to be one of there friends, bully them, or just ignore them. If I were a student in their eighth grade class, I would have two, very, diverse first impressions on both of them. When, Max walks into the classroom I would be startled, because he is so big and is a spitting image of his father. However, once I got to meet him, I would be friends with Max, but I probably would not be “great” friends with him, because we have very few things in common.
