I am very interested in applying for the receptionist position at The Westhill Retirement Residence. The receptionist's goal is to answer phone calls, and provide assistance with all other duties regarding the communication within the residence. This position will allow me to demonstrate my leadership, communication, problem solving, and multitasking skills. At Community Boards, the skills and disciplines that I learned was that I was able to handle clients through phone calls more effectively and in a manner in which I can be neutral. I also learned to be very patient with some clients over the phone, where some phone calls had spent over an hour of the client’s time talking to me about their issues at their residence. I ambitiously decided that I would brighten the lives of the elderly by volunteering at a rest home, but discovered that the elderly were being neglected, shoved aside and forgotten. As I stepped into the home a pungent odor penetrated my nostrils, causing an instantaneous gagging reflex. The place was abounded with neglected and subdued inhabitants, yearning for attention. Anybody that passed them caused a sudden outburst of ranting. The negligence and disregard the home displayed appalled me, but helped me to realize that I wanted to make a difference and change the condition people live in.

I am the person who talks to the people in the grocery store line and leaves by having already given a verbal dissertation on my life or viewpoint. This is a downfall/habit I believe I learned from my family, I am the third generation of "20 Minute talks" I have an inability to stop talking or openly discussing with people. As I have learned to harness myself over the years, I see how it aids in my influencing people, because if someone hears something enough they will begin to believe in your vision or your observation. This also is my direct line to building trust, because it is not only spewing out words and explaining it is paired with listening and being attentive to what others are saying. I align everyday discussion with purposeful direct professional advices. Communication does help me with students when they are trying to explain something and lose words or cannot describe things, it helps them fill in blanks. In Physical Education it is key, I not only have to show visually the movements and actions but verbalize and communicate the sequences for students to use as guidelines for success. If my communication is not clear I had a bank of different word approaches to get through to students if it must be differentiated for them. For many years I have had administrators tell me I over-communicate, verbally, email, and memos. Which is a great thing
Aside from being an expert juggler, the ability to work well with others is a crucial part of most social interactions, as we are forced to interact with individuals in our social and personal realm. Communication is stemmed from the act of speech, in which plays a huge role, not only at a workplace but in reality as well. Speech is simply a higher form of communication between two or more people. Great speech practices may enhance a person’s opportunity of moving up within the company he or she works for, as well as venturing off to higher positions in a professional field. Having the ability to speak well is closely related to the ability to listen well. Speaking well in a professional setting can cause one to stand out over others more and help interpret a great first impression of who that person is.
Being able to communicate effectively in a professional manner is vital in most, if not all, career paths. This statement brings up some important questions. Understanding how to communicate in a professional manner can help people in their careers and I feel improving my own communication skills will benefit me now and in the future.
