Some may say that adding a twenty minute rest period is illogical because schools would have to extend their days; students would be going to schools longer, so what’s the point? Well, studies show that on average school hours are from 6.22 and 7.17 hours. The average number of hours that schools are open is 6.93 (Education). In reality a twenty minute rest time is very reasonable with the average number of hours of school in America being so low, schools should use some of those extra hours in favor of the student 's well being. For example, adding a twenty minute rest time for kids to take a break, relax, and sleep to refuel before going to their next class; this is a better solution than loading students with homework on top of sleep deprivation and stress. “I agree with your theory, however, I do …show more content…
Twenty-five percent of students will gain weight in their first year of college from stress eating because they do not have good sleep schedules and do not take breaks (Stress). "School work, college applications, extracurricular activities, and parental expectations all contribute to teenagers’ stress”; “Youth, schools, and experts identified substance use as a common strategy for coping with stress" (Leonard). Student stress in school is very common, especially in the senior year of high school; unfortunately, some students resort to drugs and alcohol to cope with their stress. By giving students a break from homework on Wednesdays, schools can help prevent some substance abuse. Teens routinely say that their school-year stress levels are far higher than they think is healthy and their average reported stress exceeds that of adults, according to an annual survey published by the American Psychological
Class periods lasting 120 minutes instead of the usual 50 minutes give teachers more time to go in depth into their lesson plans. In my experience, both my biology teacher and my foods teacher have expressed their want for longer class hours. They have struggl...
Firstly, in the first article, a girl named Jilly Dos Santos stands up to the school and makes the school starting time later, by leading many students to help change the starting time. It also talks about how even students reading the article can step up and show their opinion to their school district about school starting times! in the article it states,” Your body isn't just on a later schedule though— your brain also needs more total hours of sleep (about 9.25 a night) to function at its best. Sadly, most teens are able to squeeze in only about 7.1 hours, on average.” This shows that if people don’t change the school starting times, most teenagers are losing around 2 hours of needing rest! in conclusion, if people like Jilly Dos Santos step up to change school times, teenagers may finally be able to get the
How beneficial would it be for students to have a free period during the school day? I will give you the reasons on to why I think students should have a free period during the school day. The reasons why we should have a free period include, having time to hang out with friends, time to get help from teachers with assignments, or catch some Z’s. One of the reasons students should have a free period is because it will allow them to relax, take a brain break, and hang out with friends. Students deserve to have this extra free time because school can be really stressful and having this free time in school to do whatever you want will help us to reset and recharge.
I am convinced that students would do better in school if they had a midday break that allowed them enough time to eat a good meal because they need to recharge their brains with physical activity. This will give students an extra push to have more energy when they return back to class. Critics may exaggerate that this method will do nothing but make students drained and exhausted personally I disagree. A mid-day break for an hour will do nothing but strengthen us, all of us. It also will give students extra time to finish unfinished assignments and homework that wasn't completed at
Since a nap should only be 26 minutes, the length suggested by NASA researchers (Rosekind), nap time could easily incorporate into the school day, either by adding time onto the conclusion of the school day, by taking a few minutes off of classes, or a combination of the two. Students would utilize this 26 minutes to nap, thereby increasing cognitive functioning and avoiding a plethora of medical ailments. In a model suggested by Meizen High School in Japan, teachers “dim the lights and put on classical music” and students put their heads down on their desks and sleep (Murugappan). In addition to this model, schools could also offer students the option of bringing their own sleeping bags or “nap mats” and reporting to the gym during nap time in order that students could lie down while they nap, which would offer a peaceful experience conducive to sleeping. By offering students these options, schools could not only ensure that students would be able to have a napping experience that would allow them to regain cognitive functioning lost by sleep deprivation but also achieve this in such a way that removes remarkably little time from the school day. On the other hand, some argue for a later school start time as the best way to reduce teenage sleep deprivation; in their view, the school day should instead start at 8:30 or 9:00 A.M. and last until 4:30 or 5:00 P.M. in order to allow students to awaken later in the morning. The organization School Start Later cites various statistics regarding sleep deprivation in order to argue for a later school start time, and although this may be true, a
Many students who feel the pressure to succeed at the high school level have an unhealthy amount of stress. Students who feel this have been cheating, pulling all nighters, becoming depressed, and seeking relief in drug use, and self mutilation. On average in a recent study at Illinois high school students spend 3.07 hours of homework each night on just homework not including extra curricular activities(Jerushapope,2). Also in this high school students reported getting 6.8 hours of sleep each night, but 34.6% reported getting 6 or fewer hours of sleep(Jerushapope,2). Most high school students spend 2 hours of extra curricular activity each night thats not including homework so after those activities you have to come home and do homework and then you will not have a lot of time to sleep. Also most kids do not get a lot of time to spend with their parents during the weeknights. Some kids cannot even make it to the dinner table because they have so much homework and that is not healthy for the parents and their childs relationship. In ...
College students in the 21st century face a wide range of challenges. Students that are fresh out of high school find themselves away from home, often for the first time, and need to adjust to their new situation. Adults returning to college struggle to find time to study while also fulfilling work and family obligations. College students are increasingly relying on technology, and the costs of attending college have been skyrocketing. Every student’s personal situation is different, but most college students have been feeling the effects of stress. Stress is the body’s response to external pressures (Nordqvist, 2015). Stress can be good and bad. An example of good stress that college students have would be feeling pressured to study for an
Students support that having a break will make them more successful. Mr.Hale can you please consider us having longer breaks between classes. Letting students have a 15 to 20 minute break will make them more successful.
In conclusion, I believe students should have 120 minute periods. 120 minute periods would have many benefits. The benefits of 120 minute schedule affect both the teachers and students. They provide more time in class, which come in handy to finish in-school projects. 120 minute periods also help students better understand the curriculum and it lowers the level of homework students receive. The benefit for teachers is they get more time for planning. 120 minute periods can help a students learning, while still giving time to reflect on what they have learned and allows them to relax.
Excessive stress in high school students is a concerning outcome that results from an excess of work from school. Sixteen year old student Bretta McCall, who has had her fair share of homework, says, “Academic stress has been a part of my life ever since I can remember. This year I spend twelve hours a day on schoolwork. I’m home right now because I was feeling so sick from stress I could not stay at school.” (MindShift) Because McCall is a high school student herself, she knows first-hand what it is like to deal with overly excessive amounts of work and stress. McCall deals with twelve or more hours spent working on schoolwork, which is more than any full-time job expects. The purpose of high school is to prepare teenagers for the dedication required to maintain a full or part-time job. However, like McCall, many students are forced to work more hours than that of an actual job. The students are overworked and overstressed, which leaves them with health issues that make them feel sick. Mary Alvord is a clinical psychologist in Maryland and public educator coordinator for the American Psychological Association. As a professional on the subject, she says, “A little stress ...
Some schools are thinking that more hour in school days would give the students more knowledge. The school should not add hours to the school day because students get tired in school, there would be more homework, and there would be longer class periods.
Everyone has daily burdens and responsibilities that they would prefer to avoid rather than begin. For college students that burden becomes anything relating to college academics, from homework assignments, to essays due next week, or projects. However, by delaying the time necessary to complete an assignment or to write a well and comprehensible essay. Students are putting their physical well being at risk.
One thing that teen constantly do is procrastinate. Procrastination is the avoiding important work that needs to be done in a period of time. Most people who do it often are not stressed because they never do anything, then they stay up all night to get there project, easy, or homework done. Waiting till the last minute is not going to good for your stress level nor for your grade. Staying up all night to study for a test is less affect then studying over a week. On page 113 of 7 Habits or Highly Effective Teens it shows you what it feels like to be a procrastinator then how it feels to get things
To begin with, a little break could allow students to talk to their friends. Some kids are separated from their friends all day. A little break could give them a chance to catch up with their friends. Next, a lot of students don’t know a lot of other students. If they had a break they would they could
School of very stressful and having to wake up doesn’t help that matter, at all. Studies show 15% of kids get enough sleep on school nights, that means that 85% of students don’t get as much sleep as they should. Studies also show having breaks improve the mental health of kids. This break I am looking forward to getting enough sleep and improving my mental health.
