When I first saw the book’s cover, the title caught my attention because I was curious about the relationship between a mice and a men, and so I made my mind to read it. While reading this book, I could sense and think about 3 main topics. They were the discrimination that black had to suffer back then, the importance of having a dream, and` the harsh life workers had to overcome. To begin with, I could empathize with the discrimination that the black must have experienced by reading this book. Crooks miserably tells Lennie that because he is black, nobody in the workplace wants to play and talk with him. From this part, I could feel the loneliness and the discrimination Crooks faced. The quote that inspired John Steinbeck was the best laid schemes often go off track can be seen in the novel of Mice and Men. When Curley's wife met a man in her childhood that offered her to be an actress but the chance went away and she later died. Then Curley wanted to be a professional boxer but the dream never happened and he became a farmer then got his hand broken for trying to be tough. George and Lennie were going to buy a farm to live off the fat of the land then Lennie had to get in trouble and George had to give up the dream and kill Lennie for what he had done.
Although discrimination is still present during the time period of the book, Crooks still attempts to make friends. Others treat Crooks unjust because he is different from others given that he is black. He does not know how to treat others because of the way others treat him; with disrespect. Furthermore, he does not know how to vent his frustration and as a result, lashes out at others because they are cruel to him. Crooks is not allowed to participate in daily events with white people. He is treated unfairly and therefore acts the same way toward the white people (the ones who offended him.)

The book Of Mice and Men is a popular novel by John Steinbeck and a required read for most high school students. Most of Steinbeck 's novels have a central theme focusing on the relationship between man and his environment. The American dream for George and Lennie, two of the main characters in Of Mice and Men, is to have a place of their own, to be respected, and to work hard for everything they earn and deserve. In Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, the land and a hope of a better life becomes the talisman of an American dream for Lennie and George that is left unfulfilled.
Curly’s wife was someone who experienced sexism and loneliness. Towards the end of the book, before she gets killed she talks to Lennie about this. “‘ I get lonely.’ She said. ‘You can talk to people, but i can’t talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. How’d you like not to talk to anybody. (87)”’ She is talking to Lennie about how lonely and depressing her life is, due to her only being able to talk to her husband. Since Curley gets angry when she talks to other men. At the time, this demonstrates that women were not equal to men. Her feelings were that she was not a part of everyone else, and could not do a lot of things. Such as have just a simple conversation with other men due to her genders, nor play cards or games with everyone. Crooks on the other hand experienced racism. He was the only African American working on the farm and injured his back severely when getting kicked by a horse. Around the end of Chapter 4 Curley’s wife is disrespecting Crooks. “Well, you keep your place then, nigger. I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain't even funny.(81)” After Curley’s wife gets angry at him and then even threatens him, Crook begins to obey what she is saying and stops talking. Discrimination was one of the issues that caused conflict in the novel “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck. One example of discrimination in the novel comes in the form of racial discrimination against Crooks, as he is an African American. Another example of discrimination is gender discrimination against Curley’s wife. Finally, there is discrimination against mentally disabled people, which is evident in Lennie’s character. The ranch hands' actions and conversations demonstrated the racial discrimination against Crooks for his skin colour, gender discrimination against Curley’s wife for her gender, and prejudice against Lennie, who was mentally disabled individual. This prevented the characters from reaching their full potential and causes tragedy.
Steinbeck uses the novella ’Of Mice and Men’ and the workers on the ranch to show the microcosm of the 1930s American Society and culture. He especially portrays Crooks in a particular way to show how Black Americans were treated in this time that the novella was set.
Man needs companionship and has difficulty maintaining it because no humans think the exact same or have the exact same beliefs. To maintain a companion you must have things in common, you must be able to disagree with a sort of respectful understanding, and finally you must care legitimately about that person. These three requirements to preserve a companionship are at times arduous to keep true. Some people do not have the time, concern, or the ability to sustain a veritable friendship with a companion or companions.
An example of how the men are discriminative towards Crooks is that he is forced to live in a shack away from the bunkhouse and also Crooks says that "They play cards in there, but I can't play because I'm black. They say "I stink" and "I ain't wanted in the bunkhouse." An example of when Curley's Wife is critical towards Crooks is when she looks into his room to see what Lennie and Crooks are doing and then she states, shaking her head, that they left the weak ones behind. Also, she threatens to have Crooks hanged because a black man should never talk to a white woman the way he just had. As a result of all of these discriminatory acts against him, Crooks feels unwanted and lonely because of his color and placement on the farm.
Racial discrimination has been around for a long time, judging people for the color of their skin. Crooks is affected by this because he is black. Blacks in that time were thought as lesser than the white people. The racial discrimination affects Crooks' life in only negative ways. He is plagued by loneliness because of the color of his skin. His lack of company drives him crazy. Only when Lennie comes in to his room does he feel less lonely. He talked of his loneliness using a hypothetical scenario of George leaving Lennie. Crooks' responds to this discrimination by staying in his barn and being secluded. He doesn't want anyone to be in there but deep down he does so he can have some company. He isn't wanted in the bunk house or to play cards with the others because he is black. This effected the story by letting people walk all over him, letting them think they can do whatever they want, and ultimately making the people think they have a lot of power when really they do not.

All three have a few things in common. They were all discriminated against. They were all neglected from everyone else. Finally, each one was lonely in a way, which resulted in hostile behavior, desperation, confusion and depression.
