Responses to Human Trafficking:
1. ‘Tiny Hands International’ (THI) is a Christian organisation. THI started in 2004 with the aims of fighting poverty and solving social injustice. Initially, their aim was to help abandoned and/or orphaned children. However, THI has recently focussed on women, particularly mainly human trafficking victims in the sex industry. The Location of India/Nepal border was chosen to work on first, because of the extremely high numbers of girls illegally trafficked around this area. THI has stated they have chosen to focus on this area as South Asia (India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Pakistan) includes over half of the human traffickers throughout the world. As the THI group is a Christian Group, their Christian values have

formed their response. The way they have grown up with affection for other people in their communities and the want of social justice means they have become actively involved in trying to stop human trafficking. As Jesus said, "whatever you do for the least of these, you do for me." In response to this, THI’s main aim is finding and helping the most desperate people in the world who need it the most. They also claim to strive to find and enforce strategies, making the greatest possible difference on the most people’s lives possible with the few recourses they are limited to. They claim they are dedicated to empowering the Body of Christ in the developing world, and their philosophy is from James 1:27 “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” As a result, since 2007 they have engaged with other Christian people and groups including Christian leader, Sukhen Biswas, and Doug Dworak, a man who had formed Peace Children's Home in Nepal in 2004, and their followers, and have established around 15 borders in the Indian-Nepal area with aims to identify human trafficking to find and rescue victims before reaching India. So far, they have saved thousands of women and children. They have established safe homes, and provide care for escaped and rescued victims to help their mental and physical health. Currently, THI is forming strategies to aid particularly women and young children, to stop sex-trafficking, such as providing education to communities with high risk and women and children about trafficking, how to prevent it and to Border staff to spread awareness about trafficking among borders. So far they have changed many people’s lives by helping them out psychologically and physically, and have stated to have ‘saved thousands of people’ from being trafficked. 2.
Soroptimist is an organization of many women who are currently working in order to help and improve the lives of particularly women, young girls and local communities throughout the world, with aims to help the human trafficking victims. The first Soroptimist club started in 1921 by a group of about 80 women in Oakland, California, in the United States of America which have therefore expanded internationally with many different Soroptimist clubs. As women themselves, they have a perception based on gender and support women’s perspectives. The Soroptimists value safety and security strongly, which have led to their responses which fully influence their actions regarding Human Trafficking. They want Women and girls live free from discrimination, Empowerment in women, and women from very different backgrounds and perspectives work together in order of improving the lives of women, girls, and young children. They hold a female perception, and believe in giving women the full potential of life and want other women to experience the freedom of life that they themselves …show more content…
value. Their aim is to ‘inspire action and create opportunities to change the lives of women and girls’ through many international partner and different clubs. In 2007, Soroptimist formed a campaign with aims to raise awareness of sex trafficking. Soroptimist club members have placed posters(see picture) and many advertisements about sex trafficking of many areas, for example, police stations, women's centres, hospitals, and legal aid places. The anti-sex trafficking project that they released ‘Soroptimists STOP trafficking’, has been enforced for four years.
Soroptimist then launched a STOP trafficking website in many different languages including English, Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese. This effectively provides different people worldwide to understand Human Trafficking and to further raise awareness internationally. In 2010-2011, the website received more than 83,000 visits. About Soroptimist 212 clubs in different ways raised awareness for the Human Trafficking project, including speakers and presentations, with around 276 presentations given to around 53,000 people. There is a Soroptimist club in the Philippines which directly supports shelter for abused women and young girls who have escaped from trafficking, one in California which held a conference in support of the Western Regional Task Force to Stop Human Trafficking and a club in Chicago has held numerous educational presentations for Human
Trafficking. 3. The National Human Trafficking Resource Centre or (NHTRC) is a national, phone hotline that promotes anti-trafficking and helps the victims/survivors of human trafficking throughout the United States. Their mission is to provide human trafficking victims and survivors with direct access to support and recourses for the victim to keep safe. NHTRC state that their value is to serve a mission that is ‘bigger then themselves’ and aim to collaborate with partnerships to help as many people as possible. Polaris state they value the dignity, agency, and life of victims in Human Trafficking. They claim to strive for equity, and engaging in different perspectives to make their decisions, and actions. With good morals themselves, they strive to help empower individuals of different backgrounds and cultures. They have a perspective of supporting human rights and equality for all. The hotline provides people in America with the ability to report tips, seek services, and generally ask for help. They also give anti-trafficking trainings, technical assistance, and capacity building support. The hotline runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, everyday throughout the whole year. They are able to speak with the hotline in English, Spanish, and more than 200 languages through a tele-interpreting service. Call Specialists then speak with the victims about their needs, and options, and also the resources that the NHTRC has. The NHTRC is operated by Polaris, which is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation and is one of the main leaders internationally who believe and hope to end modern slavery and save survivors from human trafficking. They have this value because they want to raise awareness, give the public perception and to educate the public. Income and funding is received from the Department of Health and Human Services, and from other private donors. The NHTRC believe they help individuals to access immediate and direct services and deal with the reporting of suspected human trafficking. In 2013, the NHTRC received a total of 35,889 calls nationwide. In 2013, there were 5,214 potential cases of human trafficking which was a 46% increase from 2012. A survivor of Labour Trafficking has stated “Thanks to the Polaris Project, I have a job, a home, and many friends that help me when I need it. I am making a life of my own.”
Over 2 million children are sold into sex trafficking each year (Global). Sold gives the eye-opening narrative of just one of them. I followed Lakshmi through her journey as she learned about life outside her small hometown in Nepal. She loved her mother and baby brother and worked hard to keep up with her repulsive step-father’s gambling habit. When given the opportunity to take a job that could provide for her family, Lakshmi accepted the offer. Unknowingly, she walked into the hands of horrible people who led her blindly on the path of prostitution. Discovering her fate, Lakshmi latched onto hope when all seemed bleak. After months of endless abuse, some Americans gave her the opportunity to escape her situation, and, thankfully, she took
Globalization can be defined as the “development of an increasingly integrated global economy marked especially by free-trade, free flow of capital, and the tapping of cheaper foreign labor markets that transcend nation-state boundaries”. As the world becomes a more integrated society we are more readily able to share goods, services, ideas, and technology. Furthermore, we are able to move more freely between nations. With this freedom there comes prosperity for people, companies and entire countries as we can now gain access to things we never had before. But as we expand our ideas and make it easier to cross borders, those with malicious and deceptive intentions are slipping through and committing heinous crimes that all too often go unnoticed.
The significance of this publication is to promote awareness on the issue of sex trafficking.

Many people are victims of sex trafficking and this horror must be stopped for the sake of the innocent girls and women who are being taken advantage of. Trafficking is a form of modern slavery because people’s bodies are sold for the gain of others against their wills. The steps that must be taken to prevent sex trafficking involve raising political and social awareness, people working together and the prosecution of traffickers.
Human trafficking is the act of coercing someone into working against his or her will. Anyone can be a victim, especially young girls who are vulnerable to the captor’s lies. Victims have been found anywhere from driving ice cream trucks to touring boys’ choir. In her talk, Noy Thrupkaew shares several examples about how people are deceived and coerced into coming to the United States and being forced to work for someone else. She focuses on how close to home human trafficking really is and how the victims don’t necessarily need saving but solidarity. In Noy Thrupkaew’s speech about human trafficking, she not only shares her own story but also the different situations regarding how the crime functions. Because the speaker
There are many aid projects across the world who claim to help millions of people, but because these aid projects claim to help millions of people, that does not always mean that is the case There are many different aid types, and there can be aid for almost anything an area needs help with. One aid project that not many people know about is called the Polaris Project. After being exposed to a story of six South Korean women being forced to work in a brothel, Katherine Chon and Derek Ellerman were inspired to do something about modern-day slavery (“Katherine Chon and Derek Ellerman: Fighting Human Trafficking" 3). Fast-forward 13 years and the Polaris Project is the world’s leading non-profit human trafficking aid organization in the country. The Polaris Project is the only aid organization to fight against all forms of human trafficking. Human trafficking occurs when a person is forced against his or her own will to engage in sexual acts. Human trafficking can happen to men, women and children; however, it mainly happens to women 18 years and older (“Sex Trafficking in the U.S.” 1). However, a deeper look needs to be taken into this organization to observe if Polaris Project is working effectively at what the organization claims to do.
27 million people all over the world are currently being forced into human trafficking or modern day slavery, 161 countries including the US will be affected by human trafficking. 1 million children will be exploited by the commercial sex trade each year. Sex trafficking began in the 1700s in the United States. It hasn’t been stopped because it continues to increase over the years. Even though the law enforcement and people around the world could be strong enough to stop human trafficking, I believe this situation needs to be more focused on and stopped as soon as possible. Because Human Trafficking is increasing rapidly and Oklahoma is a cross-way for sex trafficking due to the interstates such as I-35, I-40 and I-44.
Identifying the victims and rescuing them is the main key to preventing human trafficking, which in turn reduces costs to the healthcare system. Human trafficking is a form of organized crime. It involves a hierarchical system, which is similar to that of other criminal organizations. The traffickers represent every social, racial and ethnic group. Some traffickers are involved with local gangs, while others are members are part of nationally recognized gangs and organizations. Some traffickers are independent and do not have any affiliation with other gangs or organizations. Traffickers exist irrespective of gender. There are several women in human trafficking activities along with men. Several young girls living on the streets, engage in prostitution. Some of them are involved in nationwide organized criminal activities where the organizers of crime force these young girls into human trafficking. It is problematic to enforce anti-trafficking laws because in most of these cases, the victims do not tell the identity of the traffickers with the fear of being
In order to understand how sex trafficking affects its victims, one must first know the severity of sex trafficking and what it is. The issue of sex trafficking affects 2.5 million people at any given time (Abas et al., 2013). The form of sex slavery affects many women and children across the world. Even though both males and females are sexually trafficked and exploited, there is a deep emphasis on the sexual exploitation of women and children. This is due to gender discrimination (Miller, 2006). This is because women and children are more vulnerable and appeal to the larger populations of brothels and the so-called “clients” since the majority are men. Ecclestone (2013) stated that children as young as age three are trafficked. Sex trafficking has changed over time; “Today, the business of human sex trafficking is much more organized and violent. These women and young girls are sold to traffickers, locked up in rooms or brothels for weeks or months, drugged, terrorized, and raped repeatedly” (Walker-Rodriguez & Hill, 2011). It is found that many of the victims of sex trafficking are abducted, recruited, transported and forced into involuntary “sex work”. These sexual acts include prostitution, exotic dancing, pornography, and sexual escort services (McClain & Garrity, 2011). What happens to these sex trafficking victims is extremely traumatizing.
Summary: We see that there are many different aspects and types of human trafficking that everyone should be made aware of. As a whole human trafficking is a lucrative industry raking in $150 BILLION globally. The impact that this industry has on its victims is
Under Grennan’s leadership, NGN focuses on three strategies to combat human trafficking: Rescue, Reintegrate, and Prevent. During the rescue stage, NGN works with the Nepali government to locate the “orphans” in forced labor and extract them. Then, in the reintegration process, NGN takes the child to a home where house parents nurture, rehabilitate, and educate the child. If NGN can find the child's original family and the environment is safe to receive the child, NGN reunites the child to the family. Finally, they educate the community of Nepal to trafficking that is taking

It is the world’s fastest growing global crime. It is also the world’s second largest source of illegal income after drug trafficking. According to the United Nations Office on drugs and crime (2012),”Women account for 55-60 per cent of all trafficking victims detected globally; women and girls together account for about 75% and as many as 161 countries are affected by human trafficking.” It is also believed that the victims arguably come from the poorest countries in the world. One of the main causes of human trafficking is vulnerability. For example, children are more vulnerable to trafficking because of their lack of understanding and experience. Additionally, in certain societies, women are less empowered than men thus resulting in gender inequality both at home and in the workplace. Gender inequality then leads to easy exploitation through the use of force or
An article released by the BBC entitled “Horrors of India’s Brothels Documented” brought this shocking global issue to my attention. The article provides information about a young Indian girl who was only 11 when she was sold into sex slavery by her neighbor (who had persuaded her family to let her go with him to Mumbai); she was taken from her impoverished village in West Bangel. Brutally raped the first night she arrived in a brothel, Guddi is only one of 20,000 sex workers in that specific area [Kamathipura] (2013). The article elaborates on the history of sex slavery in India. It points out that laws have recently been put into place against human trafficking. However, the laws are not being strongly enforced due to the sheer number of the cases. Human trafficking is like a plague that is spread throughout the world, and India is one of the hardest hit places. This paper will elaborate on the reasons this condition exists in India, and explain the connections that India has with the rest of the world that stem from this issue.
