Crucible Essay The Crucible written by Arthur Miller has many critical themes and ideas that play a role in modern society. They all come in to play in the Salem community and even our communities today. One of the biggest themes in the book is respect and reputation. The reputation of the community and those within it was so important, that people were killed to try to uphold a righteous view. You reputation and the respect of you peers is dire. Your reputation is to die for. John Proctor exemplifies this when he is asked to write his name on the document that binds him to admitting to witch craft. “Because it is name!
