Research Project Question: Through biomechanical analysis, how can I make my golf swing more like Tiger Woods?
Clarifying and Defining my Research Project Topic / Question:
For research I considered topics within two personal interests. The personal interests that I considered for further research were Sport and Gardening. Within the field of gardening I really only considered one potential topic for research: How to re-landscape my front garden. While I also considered water preservation and how to protect plants on hot days in broad terms I really would like to re-landscape my front garden. We have recently moved from a house that had an amazing front garden and would like to re-capture this at the house we have moved to. Within the field of sport I have several interests: Drugs in Sport, AFL, Golf, Cricket, Tennis and Injury Rehabilitation. I considered:
• Drugs in Sport – Researching what has happened at Essendon in 2012 and 2013.
• AFL – Greatest GF of all time, How to train effectively, and how to select a fantasy football team.
• Cricket – Is 20-20 ruining other forms of the game?
• Tennis – Who is the greatest player of all time? Is technology ruining the sport?
• Golf – Comparing my golf swing with Tiger Woods. Is technology ruining the sport?
Within all of the topics considered I determined that comparing my golf swing with Tiger Woods is of greatest interest. I have recently had back surgery and this would appear to be a good time to re-model my golf swing. Tiger Woods has been the best golfer in the world for the past 15 years so who better to model my own swing upon. The next question is how do I analyse our swings? Biomechanics is the application of scientific principles (largely Physics) to sport. As su...

...creative in the way that I seek the advice of experts to assist. I will constantly need to ask questions of experts to clarify my thinking, reflect on my own thinking, and adjust and explain my thinking as I work through the process of analysis. I will also need to explain how the actions I recommend within my golf swing will make it more like Tiger’s swing – this will take a great deal of critical and creative thinking. I will also need to think creatively in the first instance so that I can locate the information required, but also critically to determine which research processes provide me with the best and most reliable information. To summarise, I will need to be critical and creative within the initial research phase but I will also need to develop my thinking as I apply the information that I have collected so that it can be presented in a meaningful way.
The golf swing is possibly one of the most challenging and technical processes. In Eric Nagourney’s article, Exploring the science of the golf
Most amateur golfers believe that impact on the ball is the only key factor for hitting straighter and farther by swinging harder and faster, forgetting important facets in basics of the swing. There are multiple parts of the swing that involve biomechanics however; some key points are set-up, backswing, downswing, follow-through, and ground reaction force (GFR). To focus primarily only on one point of the swing to fix all problems is an obscure way to view the s...
The purpose of this paper is to describe the softball swing anatomically, mechanically, and analytically. By analyzing each move one makes when...
Golf is a game of honor. The furthest ball from the hole must be hit first to try and get it in. In match play, if the a player gets a double par they must pick up the ball and move on to the next hole. In golf, a player compete against an opponent to see who can hit the ball in the hole, the least amount of strokes. The athlete must endure mild to intense workouts to become good at the sport. The most important aspect to work on in golf, is the swing. The athlete must focus on their golf swing to perform optimal swing mechanics. This is because the players consistency for 18 holes “depends on a stable golf swing” (Pedersen). While swinging a club, a person can work at least 16 different muscle groups in their body, so training these muscle groups will help their overall ability. Last but not least balance is another essential for every golf player. In golf, “...players who are restricted in their hips or shoulders start to strike the ball better if they downshift to 75 percent or 80 percent of full tempo” (Nilsson). Balance is a key factor in playing and being good at
Ding! The solid thump of a club hitting a golf ball is a wonderful yet soothing sound. Would this even be a sound that golf enthusiasts enjoy without some of golf’s biggest legends? The game of golf is getting stronger and part of that reason is because of some major golf legends. “Youth playing the game has increased by 20% from 2.5 million in 2010 to 3 million in 2015,”(Heitner). Some of golf’s major legends are Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Gary Player. Along with these golf legends there are some golfers today making a name for themselves. Some of these golfers include, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, and Jason Day. All of these golfers might be from different times, but they all play/played the same game we all know and
Hitting a baseball is a task that is learned through trial and error, which makes changing a batter’s swing extremely difficult. Once that batter finds their comfort zone and makes contact they will do the same thing until it fails them once again. Perfecting the mechanics of that swing won’t create an exceptional hitter, but it will create a swing that consistently incr...
Developing my swing is the first step I use in preparing for the upcoming season. There are a few different techniques I use to work on my swing. The first way is to take hitting lessons. I learn much of my knowledge about hitting from taking hitting lessons. My usual routine consists of taking lessons three times a week. This allows me to be evaluated by a professional. I took hitting lessons from the same coach for five straight years. His teachings have helped me become a much better hitter. Another way I develop my swing is by practicing daily. Even though I take hitting lessons, I still need more work. I am lucky enough to have access to a facility that has hitting cages. This allows me to work in the winter and during inclimate weather. By going to work on my swing on my own, I am able to work on the skills that my hitting instructor has taught me. This seems like it would take a long time, but it does not. I carefully plan out my time, and this allows me to use my time wisely. I allot times to work different aspects of my swing. By doing this, I am able to cover all aspects of my swing. I also videotape my swing, and this allows me to view myself afterwards. Since I videotape my practice sessions, I can go over my sessions afterwards. I have caught and fixed many mistakes my carefully watching my swing on the recordings. Developing my swing is the first of three main steps I use in preparing for the upcoming season.
Imagining myself as a high school soccer coach, I would like to optimize my team’s kicking performance. Some players consistently kick the ball successfully with the correct use of power and accuracy. To ensure that all players are able to achieve the same optimal kicking habits, this paper will document (1) the effective and ineffective habits of kicking, (2) describe biomechanical based kicking assessments, (3) describe how these assessments will measure the effective aspects of kicking and expected findings, and (4) provide suggestions on how I may modify programming based on the insights gained from these assessments.
These quotes make it clear of Tiger Woods’ impact on the game of golf and the entertainment world in general. But how did he get that way? Under Gardener’s Model, Woods fits in the bodily kinesthetic intelligence, but all professional athletes possess this trait. To be the greatest in the sport of golf, a player must possess multiple intelligences. Tiger Woods is great because he blends that with great intrapersonal, and interpersonal skills, and his minor intelligences of verbal linguistic, and scholastic achievement.
...ne and the advancements that the equipment has made. For a physical project I will build a set of golf clubs to use for the upcoming golf season. I will compare the score that I have shot with my old clubs and the clubs that I have built for my senior project. This will help me further understand how it was to build the clubs that you play with like many men did generations ago. The great Ben Hogan sums up the game of golf the best with," It's the hardest darn game that will bring you back every time with that one elusive shot."(Hist. Of golf coarse, 7)
Gardner describes the creative individual as follows: “The creative individual is a person who regularly solves problems, fashions products, or defines new questions in a domain in a way that is initially considered novel but that ultimately becomes accepted in a particular cultural setting” (Gardner, 1993, p. 35). As I understand this, a creative individual is one who seeks out problems and states or solves them in a way that no one else has previously. Such inno...
Knowledge is generated through critical and creative thinking. Creative thinking is something new or original that is created with value. Critical thinking is a type of thinking that questions assumptions and validates or invalidates a current belief or something that is said to be previously true. Knowledge is created through the culmination of generally accepted assumptions and creativity. How do you separate general assumptions and creativity? These two types of thinking can be easily separated in regards to concrete or realistic ideas compared to abstract or original ideas however to generate new, acceptable knowledge critical and creative thinking must interact together. The questioning of established beliefs with the creation of unorthodox new ideas will expose the most beneficial knowledge for the world.
None of us think critically all the time. Well-cultivated thinkers communicate effectively among others in solving complex problems and other matters in question. In short, creative and critical thinking is all about ones’ self (self corrective, self discipline, self directed).
Critical thinking regularly involves the capability to interpret information and make knowledgeable decisions based on such information. Additionally, problem solving is frequently theorised as the use of critical thinking skills towards the effective solution of a specific problem or towards a specific end goal. Critical thinking is the disciplined art of ensuring that you use the best thinking you are capable of in any set of circumstances. The general goal of thinking is to figure out some situation” (Critical Thinking, 2001, p.1), solve some problem, answer some questions, or resolve some issue. It also is a process in which a person pursuits reliable and pertinent information about the world. Critical thinking is often described as reasonable, ruminative, trustworthy, and a well-practiced form of thinking that assists people with deciding what they should believe in and what actions should be taken. A practiced critical thinker will ask good questions, collects pertinent data, categorizes common characteristics, logically reasons with the new data and then he or she will come to a trustworthy and dependable conclusion. Critical thinking makes use of many processes and procedures. Some processes include but is not limited to asking questions, making judgments, and identifying
During my classes, I learned that to be a better narrator or speaker one must be able to capture the attention of his or her audience. Creativity is the only tool to do this and to be creative one must be a critical thinker. Critical thinking enables a public speaker come up with a creative style of presenting his or her speech.
