Film Project- "The Patriot"
The film, The Patriot, is a war film set back in the 1770's. This movie is based off of real events that occurred during the American Revolutionary War. Benjamin Martin, a father of seven and a veteran from the French and Indian War, is to go to Charleston in South Carolina to vote in the South Carolina General Assembly. Seeing that there is so much going on with the war, he decides that he does not want to go down to vote. After a few things occur, Benjamin's oldest son Gabriel decides that he needs to join the Continental Army.
Later on, Charleston is defeated by Britain and when Benjamin hears the news he is worried about his son. Eventually, Gabriel comes home hurt with news from the war. They take Gabriel in

and help him recover, and other wounded soldiers are taken in and treated at their home as well. At about this point, the leader of the British Dragoons, Colonel William Tavington, come to Benjamin's house and arrest Gabriel. After doing so, he also takes it upon himself to claim the workers on his land. While this is taking place, Thomas, Benjamin's second son, makes an attempt to get Gabriel back from the Colonel. When Tavington sees this, she shoots and kills Thomas and then orders his men to burn down the Martin's home and kills all of the wounded soldiers that they were treating. Benjamin then assigns weapons to two of his sons and they go out and attack the British soldiers. After doing so they decide that they want to be a part of the war and that they want to continue fighting the British soldiers. In doing so they leave his younger kids with Charlotte, Benjamin's sister-in-law. Eventually, Benjamin runs into Colonel Harry Burwell who appoints him as the new local militia colonel after seeing that he is able to fight well. When he is given his new job, Benjamin is told to keep Cornwallis' men where they are. At this point in time they are dealing with Guerrilla Warfare, which is basically nasty and unfair forms of combat in war. It is by these means that Cornwallis' men have been able to advance as far as they already have. When Benjamin is told to do so he brings up a bit of his past to help explain why he was not so sure that he wanted to take part in doing what he was asked, but then realizes that he is wasting time when there are things at hand that need to be taken care of. When they head into action, they take out a good size of Cornwallis' men and burn down the bridges that link parts of Charleston together. Tavington the gets in trouble for letting Benjamin and his men destroy parts of Cornwallis' plan and make them look weak. He than grants Tavington with the mission of stopping Benjamin however he can. Tavington is an extremely relentless character in this story. Once he has set out on his mission to find and kill Benjamin, he finds members of the militia and digs a little deeper to try and find out who they are. After he gets this information, he then tracks them down and attacks the families of the members and the proceeds to burn their homes to the ground. In doing so, he eventually comes across the Martin's home. When his family sees them approaching, they all flee from the home and watch it burn down. When searching for a place to go, they resort to slaves that they had previously employed for a place to stay. A while later, Gabriel and his fiance, Anne, are married. When Tavington enters the town he gathers everyone in a meeting at a local church, Anne being part of this group. In this meeting, he tells the townspeople that he will let them go if they give up information as to where the rebels are being hidden. When the townspeople proceed to give up the information, Tavington then leaves and locks everyone inside the church. He soon after orders someone to burn the building down to the ground just as he has done to their homes. When Gabriel catches wind of what has happened, he heads straight for where Tavington is being held and attacks the site. Tavington then wounds Gabriel in the fight and Benjamin arrives just in time to be with his son before he dies. The movie concludes with the fight scene between Benjamin and Tavington.
Tavington is defeated and his army retreats. Benjamin is able to avenge the death of his family and friends and return to their home that is being rebuilt. In this film the main theme seems to be freedom, or lack thereof. Themes of distrust and lack of loyalty are also played around with as well. Cornwallis is a character that represents the government in this film, he plays a major role in the outcome but is not often physically seen throughout the movie, though he does show his face a few times. Tavington's role is somewhat relate able for those who do the "dirty work" for the government …show more content…
employers. I feel that this movie actually relates to our government quite well in a sense of struggle.
Cornwallis sort of represents the president's role for our country. Tavington is employed by Cornwallis and would represent those who work under and for the president, which these are the people that handle the presidents work for him. Benjamin Martin and his family would do of course represent the citizens and families of the United States. Basically, when Benjamin was pressured to do something that he did not want to do, and ended up refusing to do it, he was punished for not doing what he was being forced to do. When Cornwallis heard that he was refusing to follow his word, he sent out his handy-man to take care of the dirty work for him, which was to get Benjamin to obey his commands. When Tavington was not able to get him to do what he wanted, he resulted to punishment that was taken way too far. In a way, this can be compared to what happens in our country today. As citizens in the United States, when there is something that we are unfairly commanded to do, of course the first thing we do is object. Well, by doing so it makes those in charge angry, and there has been plenty of instances where the law has gone way overboard in their punishment tactics. Of course, those who are put in charge will not go handle the problems themselves, but send someone else to take care of it for
them. Basically, I feel that our country has a problem with control. Those who are given most of it are not the ones who are actually dealing with the problems, but sending out other people to do it for them. So when they are directly faced with a big problem they are not able to take care of it. There is also a concern for those who get power-happy and misuse their positions. This movie can really open your eyes to how our government works and it really makes you think about it. In instances, it can be a great comparison to how our government functions not just on a daily basis, but also under pressure. Work Cited: The Patriot. Dir. Dean Devlin. 1776 by David McCullough is a non-fiction historical book that historically accounts an in depth view of The American Revolution. The book starts from late 1775 and spans to the end of 1776. The book includes the Battle of New York, the Battle of Brooklyn, the Battle of Boston, the Battle of Fort Washington, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the ending Battle of Trenton in 1776. David McCullough adds a sense of emotion and color to this book where it 's more than a history book that lists facts. Not only does he add a sense of enjoyment to read, 1776 provides detailed accounts of the military life during the end of 1775 to the end of 1776 and detailed accounts of the battles. The author, David McCullough, is trying to make a point that 1776 is
Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers to the United States, was not a patriot but a mere loyalist to England before the dissolution between England and the colonies occurred. Sheila L. Skemp's The Making of a Patriot explores how Benjamin Franklin tried to stay loyal to the crown while taking interest in the colonies perception and their own representation in Parliament. While Ms. Skemp alludes to Franklin's loyalty, her main illustration is how the attack by Alexander Wedderburn during the Privy Council led to Franklin's disillusionment with the British crown and the greater interest in making the Thirteen Colonies their own nation. Her analysis of Franklin's history in Parliament and what occurred on the night that the council convened proves the change behind Franklin's beliefs and what lead to his involvement in the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution. Benjamin Franklin was the colonial agent representing Massachusetts in Parliament in Britain.
As far the Patriots are concerned, they were most citizens who wanted the revolution and freedom from the British. The Patriots were sick and tired of the British rule and their unfair treatment towards them. The Patriots
Colonialists were in search of a better life in the newly discovered land of the Americas. Ties with their mother-country of Britannia, over three thousand miles away, resulted in miscommunication and arguments. Eventually these arguments and miscommunications lead to the Revolutionary War, provoking many American Colonists to join the Continental Army. Each soldier from the militia to the regular recruits had reasons to fight; many of these reasons were influenced by the first Age of Enlightenment and other reasons were formed by personal experiences with the conflicts of Britannia and the American Colonies. The movie, The Patriot, presented many reasons that are supported by major historical documents, such as the Declaration of Independence, and that also are backed by personal testimonies of the American Colonists who joined the Continental Army.
The American Revolutionary War was the time in which the thirteen colonies finally declared their independence from Britain and were ready to fight for that independence. Joseph Plum Martin was a soldier for the Continental Army for eight years during the American Revolutionary War which spanned from 1775-1783. These years did not treat the lower class of the colonies, including Joseph Plumb Martin, very well. However, unlike many other colonists during this time period, Martin knew what he was fighting for in that long and rigorous war. He started in the army with a certain perspective of what it would be like and reason for being present there. However throughout the course of the war many things changed, and no longer did Martin fight for
The American Revolution was an important historical event in America and is widely seen as the precursor to the declaration of independence. 1776 is a historical book by McCullough about the events surrounding the American Revolution in the year 1776. The book dwells on military elements of the revolution. The book also details the military command chain of the British Army as well as that of the continental Army. The author digs a little about the politics of the time but the political aspects remain mostly in the background. McCullough writes a flowing story with fair coverage of the events of the Revolution, using detail and objectivity through reliable archival sources from both countries that took part in the war.
The Revolutionary war, sparked by the colonist’s anger towards taxation without representation, was a conflict between the United States and its mother country Great Britain. This event had been considered the most significant event in the American history. It separated the thirteen colonies from the tyrannical ruling of King George. The revolutionary war was not a big war, “The military conflict was, by the standards of later wars, a relatively modest one. Battle deaths on the American side totaled fewer than 5,000”1. However, the war proved that the thirteen colonies were capable of defeating the powerful Great Britain. Over the years there were many Hollywood films made based on the revolutionary war, 1776, Revolution, Johnny Tremain, and The Patriot. But, no movie has stirred up as much controversy as the Mel Gibbson movie The Patriot. The patriot is very entertaining but it is historically inaccurate. Too much Hollywood “spices” was added to the movie for viewing pleasures.
... harsh and tragic. Similarly, Hodgins symbolizes a life full of hardships in Portuguese Creek with the death of Elizabeth, for she had been the only good thing that had come out of the war. The positives of the families and communities working together were ultimately overshadowed by the negativity of these same families and communities falling apart; only further showing readers that new beginnings are not a chance for a better life, but center stage for one that is worse.
“I Pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” As Americans, we say this to honor our state and because we are proud of what we as a citizen of America have done to make it the America that is today. Americans weren’t the only ones that helped; veterans were a big part of the success that made our country the America that I believe in.
...he Revolutionary War should be deemed just as important as the war itself. The repeal of the Stamp Act of 1765 with the mob action towards Andrew Oliver and Thomas Hutchinson, the Boston Massacre propaganda of 1770, and the resistance movement of the Boston Tea Party were all events that inspired radical views and revolutionary change. These events were backed and played through by the use of mobs especially like men of the Sons of Liberty. In the end, these men weren’t just “a rabble of boys”, “disorderly sailors”, or “miscreants” nor just a motley crew who was purely destructive and mindless. Rather they were men who acted for the betterment and survival of a people; patriots. These mobs help drive the resistance of the British from idea to movement toward greater change. In other words, these men steered America toward resistance and finally toward revolution.
As Coach Boone takes the boys to Gettysburg, they see first-hand where men laid their life on the line for them. The small town of Alexandria shows how a Friday night football game should be and what football and community are all about. The community also proves that even though not everyone sees eye to eye, there is always a compromise. Coach Boone and Coach Yoast also face many difficulties. They must also come together and work as a team to lead this football team where it needs to be. Coach Yoast realizes that he must work with Coach Boone for the sake of the boys he has watched grow up. These two do a great job in showing that overcoming problems is
The Boston Tea Party was not really a tea party. Instead it was a group of people dressed like Indians with axes dumping tea off three ships to protest British taxes. It took place in Boston Harbor, Boston, Massachusetts on December 16, 1773, from 7:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M.
The Patriot begins in March 1776, with a messenger from the Continental Mail Service delivering a stack of letters to Benjamin Martin. The most urgent letter was from the Speaker of the Assembly. Everyone who was old enough knew what this meant. Benjamin’s sons thought war was glorious and were excited by the letter. Benjamin, who was a veteran of the French and Indian war, was not. He learned the hard way how gruesome war was, and didn’t want to have anything to do with it, nor his family. His oldest son Gabriel scared him the most. Gabriel wanted to join the war, and was old enough to do it. The note was an invitation to a meeting in Charles Town where the colonies would decide whether they’d join the cause or not. Benjamin and family left for Charles Town to stay with their aunt Charlotte on their mother’s side. Benjamin and Charlotte had a spark between them, but Benjamin was not yet over his wife. At the meeting, an argument over why the colonies should all unite was in full strength.
II. Movie Summary: “The Patriot” takes place during the Revolutionary War. It’s 1776 and intense fighting is going on in the north, while in the south the people are scrambling to recruit anyone who was willing to fight against the British. The main character, Benjamin Martin, is a veteran of the French and Indian war who wants independence from Britain, but is not willing to risk the safety of his already motherless children by going to war. His son Gabriel however, has a different view of the war, and enlists in the Continental Army without the consent of his father. Soon Benjamin is forced into action whether he wanted to be or not. When helping out hurt and wounded soldiers from both sides at his home he is viewed as a traitor, and Gabriel is ordered to be hanged. Benjamin’s son Thomas tries to help Gabriel, but is shot and killed by the brutal and nasty Colonel William Tavington, who also orders the Martin’s house to be burned to the ground. This understandably pushes Benjamin over the edge. He and his two younger sons then by themselves gun down over 20 redcoats and rescue Gabriel. Benjamin’s quick shooting and stealthful movements earn him the nickname of “The Ghost.” He then leaves his children with their aunt Charlotte, and forms a small militia group full of locals to help in the fight against the British and for personal revenge. Martin’s militia accounts for many redcoat deaths and cause a lot of trouble for the British. Col. Tavington however, results to his brutal tactics against the families and loved ones of the soldiers in Martin’s militia. Tavington is responsible for the deaths of Gabriel’s, wife, most of the citizens of their SC town, and later Gabriel himself as well. Martin’s army however overcomes much adversity, and plays a large part in the Continental effort. They later join up with the main Continental Army, and along with the long awaited arrival of the French, force Cornwallis and the British to surrender at Yorktown. Benjamin also gets his revenge by killing Tavington in the battle. This spells victory for the Americans and p...
The Patriot, written by Robert Rodat, takes place in South Carolina and reveals a widowed father’s love for his family and trying to keep them together, despite the Revolutionary War that had begun. Trying to keep his demons from reappearing, Benjamin Martin faces his fear of his past coming back to haunt him after serving in the French and Indian War. Martin is a South Carolina farmer who lost his wife, Elizabeth, and reluctantly signs up to join the Continental Army after his eldest son, Gabriel joined the regulars to fight against the British. After a battle began on Martin’s plantation, Benjamin helped wounded soldiers from both sides and was approached by William Tavington, a colonel with the British. During this confrontation Tavington informed Martin that anyone who assisted soldiers of the Continental Army would lose their home. Tavington then threatened Martin’s children and captured Gabriel, a military courier delivering dispatches between Continental Army units, and a younger son, Thomas was killed by Colonel Tavington, while trying to save his brother’s life. And despite Martin’s soulful plea, his son was not spared nor was his home.
