The movie I have chosen for this project is 42, directed by Brian Helgeland. Brian Helgeland is an American filmmaker, director and screenwriter.He has won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. His motivation for his work is exploring the darker aspects of humanity and showing what really happened during those times. He’s got a talent for capturing the essence of the period, showing historical details from a deeper perspective. The movie 42 follows an African American baseball legend Jackie Robinson who is trying to make it into the major leagues, this movie takes place right after WWII which Jackie Robinson serves in. While this was huge for the African American community and for baseball, Jackie Robinson faced racism head on from spectators and even his teammates. The first time he faced racism was by his own team, they started a petition stating they wouldn’t be playing on the same field as Jackie Robinson because he was an African American and because they would face backlash for playing with a black person by their friends and family. Another way Jackie Robinson faced racism was the fans at the games shouting racial slurs at him as he stepped up to the plate, he also led the hit by pitches in the Major Leagues. And the managers of the other teams encouraged this, showing how much they did not want to be associated with Jackie Robinson. One of the players actually walked out while Jackie was at bat and started shouting racial slurs at him, which caused him to break down and storm down the tunnel back to the locker room.
