In Edgar Allan Poe’s short gothic story, “The Fall of The House of Usher”. The unnamed narrator was invited to the House of Usher by the owner and old friend: Rodrick Usher, the narrator then travels to the House to meet with Rodrick. The narrator speaks about an illness Usher is suffering from and how it is altering his mentality. Rodrick shares how the fear he experiences makes his illness worse over time. The conflict in “The Fall of The House of Usher” is person vs self, between Rodrick and himself, and the conflict also influences the theme: fear. The setting in “The Fall of the House of Usher” connects the theme of fear and conflict, because of Rodrick’s connection to the house and the way he personifies fear as the enemy. …show more content…

The unnamed narrator sits down with Rodrick Usher and Usher explains the certain fears he experiences about the house. Usher felt as if he and the house had some kind of connection “He felt that the house, with its gray walls and the quiet lake around it, had somehow through long years gotten a strong hold on his spirit” (Poe 26). Rodrick personifies the house as if the house is another being connected to him by Usher's fear/sickness. Fear is what is causing the conflict between Usher and himself because he feels as if the House has a ‘strong hold on his spirit’. “I saw the great walls falling apart. There was a long and stormy shouting sound— and the deep black lake closed darkly over all that remained of the HOUSE OF USHER.” (Poe 33). After Usher dies because of fear the house falls to the ground, this shows that Ushers fear that he and the House are connected.
