Maloney should not be charged with second-degree murder because her actions do not contain sufficient evidence to prove guilty in court. For someone to be charged with a crime, specifically, second-degree murder, they must be proven guilty in court, in other words, innocent until proven guilty. Mrs. Maloney could not be proven guilty as she had a strong, solid alibi and detectives underestimated her physical power, due to her being in her 6th month of pregnancy. They thought she might be too weak, and the fact that they had already confirmed her alibi justified this point. Detectives had to make sure her alibi was valid, so they went to the grocer she claimed to have gone to for groceries. They confirm it and quietly discuss the possibility of her being the murderer; “acted quite normal... very cheerful... wanted to give him a good supper... peas... cheesecake... impossible that she...” The detectives whisper to each other about how they think it would be impossible for Mrs. Maloney to have killed him. The evidence is simply insufficient, and nothing could lead to her being the offender. They fell for it, too. Soon they moved on with the search; “So they left her there while they went about their business searching the …show more content…
Maloney is a smart woman; she shows proficient abilities to express fake emotions that work in her favor when she needs to get out of trouble. Detectives have ruled her out as a suspect. It takes experience to understand how a pregnant woman’s mind works. How their emotions intensify drastically and how that could impact their actions. What if Mrs. Maloney was overtaken by a rushing wave of unmanageable, inexpressible emotions at that time? It is a well-known fact that pregnant women tend to be more emotional than they usually are otherwise. These emotions can take over your actions sometimes. You become more vulnerable to reckless actions. The hormones just happen to take over your body. Sometimes even leading to emotional numbness. In Mrs. Maloney's case, she was already heavily pregnant and was emotional, specifically because of what Mr. Maloney had to confess. “It didn't take long, four or five minutes at most, and she sat very still, through it all, watching him with a kind of dazed horror as he went further and further away from her with each word.” She shows clear signs of pregnancy hormones. She felt sick, which is a very common reaction/symptom in pregnancies. She kept silent and analytic. On the inside though, the alarms were blaring. she went into some sort of silent manic

This characterization is typical of the attitude of the society of the time of a women, pregnant, presented with a situation she cannot control. Mary’s first instinct is to reject her husband’s news

The Lady, the Tiger, or the Lamb Reading is a common pastime and hobby for many people. Whether it’s poetry, fiction novels, or biographies, there is a type of literature for everyone. Short stories are a great type of writing because while they are not too long, they have a fair amount of plot and literary devices. “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl and “The Lady, or the Tiger” by Frank R. Stockton are two short stories that engage readers and leave them to infer various big details. While they both are excellent passages, “Lamb to the Slaughter” is a far superior story.
All of Roald Dahl’s stories seem to be brimfull of irony and wry humor, and “Lamb to the Slaughter” is no different. Mary Maloney, a pregnant, but cheerful woman is very much in love with her husband and we certainly don’t expect her to be of any trouble. It’s shocking enough to learn that her husband, who seems such a nice guy, is cheating on her and plans to move out. This changes the expectation of the story right off the bat, and we feel a compassion for the poor woman. We’re not sure how she’s going to cope with this news, especially since she’s six months pregnant with his child. So when she acts rather compulsively and strikes him over the head with the leg of lamb that was going to be his supper, we really are shocked. She’s acted
People of the court, we’re here today on behalf of our defendant, Mary Maloney. Our defendant is not guilty of first degree murder, which she has been charged with. After hearing Mary’s testimony it is obvious that Mary reacted under the influence of pregnancy hormones, past insanity, and extreme stressful anxiety.
The sweetest ones can be the deadliest, because behind that smile could be a world of misery. Sometimes the most obvious clues are the hardest to find. In “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl, a seemingly doting wifes world goes shattering into pieces and no one would expect her reaction. “Charles,” by Shirley Jackson, an impudent kindergarten boy finds joy in telling his parents about a disobedient boy who constantly gets into trouble. Both of these stories display that the truth can be right under your nose through the events in the plot.

Lamb to the Slaughter, by Roald Dahl, instantly grabs a reader’s attention with its grotesque title, ensuing someone’s downfall or failure. The saying “lamb to the slaughter,” usually refers to an innocent person who is ignorantly led to his or her failure. This particular short story describes a betrayal in which how a woman brutally kills her husband after he tells her that he wants a divorce. Using her fabricated fable, vulnerable position, and food and drink, she attempts to bring the officers to take her word for it- and succeeds. According to one of the detectives, she “... acted quite normal… very cheerful… wanted to give him a good supper… peas… cheesecake… impossible that she…” (16). Not to gloat, but women are just as capable of committing a murder as men are; the detectives had their proof, and doubts, as the murder scene seemed too perfect (as well as the hit) and they almost discovered the murder weapon, but again, the stereotypes of women being “quiet and harmless” came into play. Even after bringing in detective after detective (who are all men) and a crowd of officers, and after inspecting her home for possible weapons, they did not find anything, but still realize something is off. They almost discover the murder weapon cooking in the oven, but conniving Ms. Maloney coaxes the officers into eating the murder weapon; the very thing that killed their

Roald Dahl’s version of Lamb to the Slaughter, greatly presents and interprets the events that take place in the original story. This film perfectly displays the drastic change between a dedicated, loving housewife, to a mischievous murderer. At the beginning of the film, Susan George perfectly plays the role of the “perfect wife,” as she caresses her husband Patrick (played by Michael Byrne), and jumps up at any opportunity to comfort him. However, Mary’s behavior is chilling and real as the movie progresses; the movie ends with her laughing in a frightening manner upon realization that she has gotten away with her husband’s murder. The order of events in the film is also an inventive way to tell the story. The pieces leading up to her husband’s
