I chose to do my project on the movie, Hitch. Hitch has always been one of my favorite movies & I was super excited when I saw it was on the list of movie options. The movie is named after the main character, Alex “Hitch” Hitchens, who is played by Will Smith. Hitch is a very successful dating coach. The movie focuses on one particular client, Albert Brennaman, who is played by Kevin James. Albert is a dorky, chubby, financial advisor who has a big crush on the glamorous Allegra Cole, who is played by Amber Valletta. Although, with the help of Hitch, Albert makes great strides with Allegra, Hitch, himself, faces some setbacks when his techniques fail to work on the woman he is after, Sara Melas, played by Eva Mendes. Sara is a tabloid reporter for a gossip column who is looking to expose the love life of Allegra Cole. Through her research and thriving relationship with Hitch, Sara discovers Hitch’s connection to Albert, who is now Allegras boyfriend. The first concept I noticed in the movie was nonverbal communication.
Nonverbal communication is so important to pick up on in a relationship because it brings light to opinions and thought that are not voiced. I noticed this concept in the first kiss scene. In this scene, Alex Hitchens is trying to teach his client, Albert Brennaman, how to properly handle a “first kiss” situation. Hitch teaches Albert all the in’s and out’s of what is going on in a woman's head when she is being walked to the door after a date. He states that, “8/10 women believe that the first kiss will tell them everything they need to know about a relationship.” He also talks in depth about what certain actions made by the woman should mean to the man, such as what she does with her keys. Hitch says that if she fiddles with her keys, she wants to kiss & that if she immediately opens her door, then she doesn't want a
kiss. Concept #2 - Self Disclosure The next concept I noticed in the movie was self disclosure. We learned in class about the importance of self disclosure in a relationship. As stated in class, “The more you share about yourself with your partner, the higher levels of happiness a couple will encounter.”. We also learned that disclosing makes a person more attractive and it's all about reciprocity. Hitch and Sara both have a lot of trouble with this area because neither of them disclose any personal information. This leads to the climax of the movie and the main conflict that not only affects their own relationship but also the relationship of Albert and Allegra as well. Conclusion All in all, I really enjoyed working on this project. As stated earlier, Hitch is one of my all time favorite movies, so being able to incorporate it into a school project was really fun. I found it really interesting looking at the movie from a different point of view and looking for different concepts we had discussed in class, such as nonverbal communication, self disclosure, and comparison level. I also noticed that the movie had a great deal of romanticism intertwined in each of the relationships. The movie depicts that true love can overcome any obstacle, that love is possible at first sight, and that love is the most important basis for choosing a mate, which were all aspects we discussed in the romanticism lecture. Lastly, I did learn a lot from this assignment. I found it very helpful to see these topics we discussed in class in real life situations. After watching the movie from this point of view, I have began to notice more of our in-class concepts in everyday situations in my life.

Even though verbal communication is fairly straightforward, nonverbal communication allows others to sense the true emotions of the person that is expressing them. For example even though a person may say that they are not irritated, their usage of voice may display otherwise. Nonverbal communication not only reveals hidden messages, but it also complements, substitutes, and exaggerates verbal communication.
Throughout Finding Nemo we see many different types of nonverbal communication through gestures, actions, and reactions of characters that show us how important nonverbal communication really is. It is very crucial in plain daily communication as my examples support the meaning of messages and the importance. Although Finding Nemo has more nonverbal examples from what I have written it is important to know that it has various forms that replace certain parts of verbal. Understanding nonverbal communication can make it much easier for one in a situation because they would be able to pick up on the messages. Dory might not have picked up on the messages Marlin was giving but in a situation like this a different approach would have to be taken. I realized that you can decipher a lot from an individual or individuals by just paying close attention to what they do, and that words are not really necessary.
