Schooled or Educated?
The issue of how we should be educated and what we should learn in school is a highly talked about issue in the United States today. Should students go to school for twelve years? Do they need to all of these standardized tests to be a successful adult in society? Or issues such as grading and how it affects students. Good Will Hunting is a positive movie for a viewer, which shows the issue we see in schools and society today of being schooled or being well educated. They were both taught the non-traditional way of education. 1S Jerold Lucey says in his essay “Home Schooled?” that “[t]he survey found that home-schooled children scored well above the national median on standardized tests,”(##). This is just another piece of evidence that shows it is not how you are taught, but instead how you are educated. Traditional education is not for everyone as it was not the way that home-schooled kids wish to be educated, or Will in the movie. Parents always want what is best for their kids. Education is just another thing that they want to see their children succeed at. 2S According to Cynthia Drenovky and Isaiah Cohen in their article titled “The Impact Of Homeschooling On The Adjustment of College Students”, they say “[h]omeschooling is an option for education that has increased considerably since the 1970s,” (##). But on the other hand the movie is telling us that we need to do whatever we want with our knowledge to be happy in life. You do not necessarily need to be making the most money or driving the nicest car, you just need to do whatever is going to make you happy. Will makes the decision to not take the job right away but instead go after his girlfriend in California, because that is what is going to make him the most happy. Society says that you must be pretty smart if you have a Bachelor’s Degree, or a Master’s Degree, but there can be people out there who are smarter than you just because they were not great students in the classroom, but were well educated. Many Americans do not question the credibility of the education system within the country because they believe it forms good citizens and creates a stepping-stone to success. John Taylor Gatto is an American teacher who has experience in the classroom for thirty years and has now devoted his life to critiquing American schools exploiting his own experiences. In his essay “Against School”, he argues that the 12-year system of school may not be necessary, due to its curriculum, and that it may be a tactic of manipulation from the government to promote obedience. I agree with his argument because there are many paths to individual success outside of public education, such as homeschooling or vocational school.
In recent years, many have debated whether or not a college education is a necessary requirement to succeed in the field of a persons’ choice and become an outstanding person in society. On one hand, some say college is very important because one must contribute to society. The essay Three Reasons College Still Matters by Andrew Delbanco shows three main reasons that students should receive their bachelor’s degree. On the other hand, many question the point of wasting millions of dollars on four years or maybe more to fight for highly competitive jobs that one might not get. Louis Menand wrote an article based on education titled Re-Imagining Liberal Education. This article challenges the main thought many americans have after receiving a secondary education. In his essay “Against School,” John Taylor Gatto illustrates his view point that the American population would be better off by managing their own education. He compares the school system to the concept of boredom; that students as well as teachers are victims of the long ago adopted Prussian educational system: “We suppress our genius only because we haven’t yet figured out how to manage a population of educated men and women. The solution, I think, is simply and glorious. Let them manage themselves.” In other words, Gatto believes that the main reason for the existence of schooling consists in that it trains our children to be obedient citizens who can’t think on their own. The sociological perspective examines the hidden reasons for one’s actions and identities that people have. It stressed how they are influenced by their society and most of all their social location. Social location predetermines all aspects of one’s life and there are rules that come with social location, and with rules come social control mechanisms and social stratification that keep people in line. With social location also come institutions that provide roles which form one’s identity. In the movie, “Good Will Hunting,” the main character Will Hunting is a young deviant what grows up in a rough neighbourhood and has the intellect of a genius. According to the speakers in the film, the purpose of education is to have a well-informed public that can be active members of society and participate in the democratic process. Schools, Teaching, and Learning; Not Good for Everyone Never let going to school and taking classes get in the way of learning. There is more than enough blame to go around regarding the education and preparation for the recent generations of students entering adulthood. Some people, like Michael Moore blame politics on the poor state of education, others like Davis Guggenheim, blame the powerful teachers union putting their own needs before the students. Besides the classroom, nowhere in modern society emphasizes learning for the sake of knowledge. In society, the people who receive praise are the ones who did not have a solid education. America has become obsessed with success stories that forgo education because educational knowledge no longer contains any value. American leaders do not make an extra effort to try and fix the failing education system, so if the world powers of America do not care to make progressive improvements for the education system, why should citizens of America even care about the education system? The students in school have picked up on these thoughts and instead of listening to the classroom teacher the students listen to the world teachers. Barber defines these world teachers as “the nation’s true pedagogues, are television, advertising, movies, politics, and the celebrity domains they define.” (Barber, 2014, p. 2.). These leaders have different values than the values set as the standard by the education system. The education system values wisdom, knowledge, critical thinking, and the ability to articulate one’s thoughts and ideas convincingly. While the American system contrasts these ideas: “We honor ambition, we reward greed, we celebrate materialism, we worship acquisitiveness, we cherish success, and we commercialize the classroom. . . We recommend history to the kids but rarely consult it ourselves. (Barber, 2014, p. 4.). This reasoning lays the foundation for the destruction of the school system. Adults do not find value in education, but they encourage their children to try and find value in area the adults do not. Children have caught on to this and decided the absolute best option for them to success is to flee the classroom setting and surround themselves in the world where they can learn firsthand the steps to become successful. Horace Mann was an American politician and education reformer who is known as the ‘father of public school.’ Mann said that the key to good society is “best expressed in these few and simple words: ‘Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it’(ppt).” Reflecting on Mann’s quote, I believe he was sharing his belief that public school could have a positive social and moral effect on students beyond the academic benefit they receive from the classroom and that he felt it was worthy of being intentionally taught.
