All throughout history, there have been several events in which people were forced to take a stand for something they believed in. There have been wars, civil rights movements, protests, and certainly fights for independence. As a result, groups of people or individuals begin to arise and essentially become leaders of a movement in the direction of better opportunities. One of these leaders, Mohandas Gandhi or sometimes referred to as Mahatma Gandhi, was an anti war activist and civil rights leader. Today, he remains one of the most influential leaders in history. He took a stand that was both peaceful and effective and essentially earned India its independence. Gandhi was born on October 2, 1889. He was born to a Hindu Modh family which is a type of caste referring to people from the place he was born, Gujarat. When he was seven years old, he moved to the city of Rajkot. Apartheid was the policy of segregation. At this time, South Africa had been controlled by the English and Dutch. Apartheid consisted of basic violation of human rights and restricting of basic things. Although the majority of South Africa was occupied by non-whites, the white population’s ultimate goal was to completely separate the non- white population from the white population. In addition, they tried to separate tribes and groups in order to decrease their political power. Almost immediately after his arrival to South Africa, he was subjected to discrimination. Once when he was traveling by train, Gandhi was taken off of the train even though he had a first class ticket.
