Change. It’s something humans fear most. And change is something Eveline – from James Joyce’s short story Eveline – chose to reject. Sometimes changes can have consequences, and sometimes you're given a choice. Eveline ponders the choice placed in her hands. Will she stay with her abusive father in a hard working life, or sail away to Buenos Ayres with her short-time lover, Frank? Although in the end, she chooses to stay with her family and abusive father, she is considered a hero due to the fact that she stays for the greater good, not for herself, but for the sake of others. Due to her mother’s death, Eveline’s psychological state is already quite fragile. She seems to love her mother more than her father, and after her mother’s death, her father became more abusive. Eveline’s mother spoke seemingly crazed words before her death: “Derevaun Seraun! Derevaun Seraun!” Which translates to "at the end of pleasure, there is pain". Her mother could be saying this to her to warn her that though things may seem good to Eveline at that moment, at the end it will be worse. Presumably, he’s only been in Eveline’s village for no more than a couple months or so. Sailors, especially young ones, during that time tended to pick up maidens every time they made a stop. Eveline even said that it “seemed a few weeks ago”, which might not even be an understatement. After only spending a few weeks with a man she just met, she wants to run away with him, get married, and live with him in Buenos Ayres. Her father, with more experience, disapproved of their relationship as well, as he “quarrelled with Frank.” Eveline didn’t choose to depend on a man to save her from the hardships at home.
