Introduction: Drumline is a FOX production movie that was released in 2003. It protagonist Devin Miles (Nick Cannon) as an upcoming candidate for Atlanta A&T Band organization. The movie itself provides little knowledge for entertainment purposes of the popularity of College Marching Bands. Nick Cannon plays a talented drummer (snare) who is recruited to college. He impresses the Band Director with his talent, and is offered an opportunity to play with a band that has been finishing 2nd in a National competition. Since a large part of a successful outcome depends on the quality of the drum section, the director feels that he may be the "missing key" to land them the 1st place trophy. The band director is under a lot of pressure from the schools …show more content…
In most cases it’s often taught by HBCU bands to push these rules. Devin Miles was in a scene with other candidates that were preparing for the first morning practice of the season. Realistically, an upperclassmen nine times out of ten was present in the event which Devin was present. The movie didn’t address the issue with the matter at the practice for the beginning of the year. In the movie Devin step out of a freshman bounders at a performance. The freshman is normally the one in the back playing the standard parts. Once he decided to play the solo part and proceed to the front of the line he had to be punished immediately. Also freshman skills are brought up to the Colligate HBCU bands standers. The marching style, and the way the band plays is all shown to the freshman. Simple skills like reading music is a must in the band. Time should not be wasted going over simple rhythms. Devin is a great ear player but, the band needs musicians. Another point freshman are not allowed to fraternize with band females. This means no dating or outside band interactions with band females. This is to insure that no one get distracted in the band room by the significant other. Devin dated and also was affected in his performance by …show more content…
Learning all music is very important and a freshman first job. Once the music is learned completely we start the drill sequence. .After this the rest of the book is worked on until it meets the band director’s needs. The key factor of a good freshman is discipline. This has a lot of points that will make or break you. This means the attitudes are in check and there are no feelings just business. Staying in a freshman place is following all the rules even if there don’t make sense. It’s a freshman job to sit back and learn as much as possible the first year. No freshman is allowed to any extra activities until and upperclassmen. Fraternizing is also a topic freshman cannot partake in. Reading is not an issue from upper classmen and so shouldn’t it be from freshman. All basic skills are to be mastered. Once one is finally consider an upperclassmen the duties are now to swerve the band as a noble person. Still keeping the original attitude as a freshman the work still needs to be done. Even after being a freshman there are a lot of responsibilities in the band. Upholding the band in its standard is a big responsibility carried on even after being a freshman. After Devin realized that following these rules for freshman helped him out in the long run. These rules in the end will make a successful freshman and continue to be a successful
Band is family. When your student walks onto campus, he or she is instantly adopted into the strongest society on campus. They will be spending their school days among the top achievers on campus, with fellow students who look out for one another and steer each other away from trouble instead of towards it. Teachers, staff, parents, and volunteers watch over all the kids as if they were their own.
Not only am I in the band, but I am an essential component to the success and well-being of my section. The clarinets never sounded better than when they were under the direction of Section Leader Sarah, whom they all loved and adored. Okay, that's a boldfaced lie. As a dedicated band member, I demand perfection, not only in my own performance, but also in the performance of others. I refuse to accept mediocrity from any section member. In my opinion, there is no excuse for not knowing music, ignoring instructions, or not knowing right from left. Sadly, this quirk of mine doesn't make me terribly popular among t...
...a life lesson. The military style of drum line is what has helped me improve in my schoolwork, my family life, and my friendships; I was trained to never give up even if success seems impossible.
This paper is an examination of the movie Drumline. It presents a few characters, their mentality, screw ups in the movie, and a short synopsis of the movie itself. Drumline, a movie fixated on the exceptional rivalry and pomp of the Marching Bands of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities of the South. The marching bands set the structure for Drumline a movie around a talented, yet cocky adolescent drummer who understands that it takes more than ability to succeed. Drumline is a heartbeat beating musical drama around a youthful, undisciplined, freshman drummer who tries to fit into a disciplined show-style marching band at an anecdotal school in Atlanta. Drumline is a fascinating, yet humanist, investigation of the dangers
I'd like to make sure that freshman weren't scared about Drumline. To help them know they had someone who could help them with music. I would try my best to build the Drumline up as a whole and to make sure that I was only saying positive things to build others up. I would love to try to avoid that because the Drumline to me is a family. We all may fight but deep down we all love each other, care for each other and don't want to see anyone brought down. I would try to do create activities during band camp to make it much more fun. I also think a leader should have the basic knowledge of all the instruments in the Drumline and Pit so that he or she would be able to help anyone that's struggling with whatever it may be. Also, a leader should be very devoted to whatever he or she is a part of. He or she should really practice a lot for Drumline and make it a habit of focusing mostly on Drumline. I've seen how I have grown in the last few years from just practicing and sitting down and going through stick control and even just
George Helmholtz, as the head of the music department at Lincoln High School, is very determined with his regular students and the gifted musicians of the band. Each semester and year at school he dreams of “leading as fine a band as there was on the face of the earth. And each year it came true”. His certainty that it was true was because he believed there was no greater dream than his. His students were just as confident and in response, they played their hearts out for them. Even the students with “no talent played on guts alone” for Helmholtz.

Looking around and seeing bright lights and feeling all eyes on you. Hearing both sides of the stadium cheer and shout for their teams and getting nervous during the last few seconds of the second quarter and at the same time being very proud of what the band has accomplished in the brief amount of time it took to learn the pretty intense and complex drill. Then suddenly you get the adrenaline rush that pushes you to perform. Many people would agree that being a drum major is one of the most eminent positions that is held by students who are Being the Drum Major of any band shows that you have the respect and trust of the members of the band and it’s directors. It also shows that you are passionate about what you do, responsible and that
One of the biggest decisions of my high school career came my sophomore year when I decided to try out for the role of drum major in my high school band. This decision was very tough to make due to the fact that I was a sophomore, and although I already had three years of experience under my belt as a band member at Northview High School, I knew that it would be very tough to earn the respect of my peers if I succeeded in becoming drum major. Out of the three years I had spent in the band, the biggest influence on my decision to try out came from my very first marching season, between August and December of 2012. From that year forward, after seeing many areas that the band could improve, watching how underclassmen and middle school band members
There is something that generally is very noticeable in every band: the gender imbalance. The gender imbalance is can be described by looking at a band and noticing the people in each section. Some have all males or at least a great majority of them, like percussion (which is drums) or low brass (tubas, baritones or trombones). While others such as high woodwinds (flutes or clarinets) have a majority female population. There are a few sections you may be able to look at and see this, such as trumpets or saxophones, but even this depends on the marching band. This is a huge problem in the marching band world and it needs to be fixed so that more people will join or continue on in their music. The reason this is a huge problem is because when someone breaks that gender imbalance, for example a guy plays the flute, then people start to target that person. He could be teased or bullied which could make him quit band. Not a lot of girls try out for low brass or percussion because they guys in the group will most likely see them as inferior and give them all kinds of crap every day. Marching band is supposed to be a community that is like a family and people should feel comfortable with whatever that choose to play. With the current gender problem, that is not happening and therefore the community as a whole is
Band is an elective given in elementary schools through college schools around the world. Many schools come together and compete with one another. School bands also perform at football games, basketball games, and in parades. Most school marching bands are accompanied by a color guard, a group of performers, who add a visual interpretation to the music by using props, flags and rifles. A school marching band apparel includes a military type of style, the school's colors, along with the school's name and mascot. It is important to have band as an elective in schools because it helps kids display their emotions and maybe for some it is a hobby. Band directors have said that having band helps young emotional development, helps contribute to a more intellectual culture, builds teamwork and self confidence. It is hard to imagine being in this amazing class and coming upon these out of the box stereotypes and misconceptions of being a nerd, lazy or unathletic. These stereotypes and misconception mainly come from basically movies, shows and books things that are being aired. For example, a kid show, spongebob, kids from ages three to twelve are watching these shows maybe even teens and adults. A spongebob episode fifteen, season two is titled “band geeks”, putting this low degrading name on the group of kids performing at football games with instruments
Many different bands will practices not only during school hours, but also after school. It is just another similarity between marching band and sports. For example, my high school band has practice every day for 50 minutes and on mondays and thursdays after school for two and a half hours. Which is more than my high school bowling team practice. During these practices people will learn drill, music, and basic marching from the band director. He, or she, is like the coach. The students follow their instructions, just like following a coach. The students will even run, stretch, or do other types of exercise before starting. During these practices students must work hard and want to get better. Students cannot screw around or they could mess up the entire band. That is the same for other sports as
Upon learning the position of Drum Major has an opening, I did not immediately consider pursuing it. Simply being able to play my instrument in band was enjoyment enough, or so I thought. Pondering the idea more thoroughly, I came upon the realization of all that I could accomplish musically holding the position of Drum Major. I realize that this opportunity has many potential benefits in regards to my future. Being Drum Major would allow me the opportunity to hold a broader leadership position in the band than my currently held position as section leader.
It is impossible to fully comprehend the appeal to the Gulf Coast High School Band Room unless you are actually a member of the band. All members of the Gulf Coast High School marching band spend the majority of their time in the band room, which is like a second home for most. The room itself does not appear to be anything special. It is a large room with a high ceiling, bright fluorescent lighting, and pink and green padding on the walls. The hallway maintains a terrible odor which nobody can quite determine the source of, and the white, vinyl tile floor is covered in a layer of disgusting things one can only dream of. Still, for some reason it remains a haven to about twelve percent of the student body. At first glance, it does not look like anything special, but when you open that big, gray door and step into the “band world” it becomes clear that it really is an amazing and wonderful place. It feels like the center of the universe.
However I did not have a big problem being in that class, the only issue was there were no instrument like a keyboard piano. The instrument that I picked was the brass flute since it looked easy to learn. As I continued to practice playing the flute in my Beginning Band class and rehearse after school, I mastered to which keys to press and how to blow properly in the riser. To be able to play at a slow tempo, regular tempo, and swift tempo. As matter of fact, I also learned to work well and play all together with my classmates and my flute partner, Robbie Lee. From being in this class, My Beginning Band has taught me skills of playing an instrument besides a keyboard piano and gave me more knowledge about music. Somehow being in that class, it inspired me to teach myself to sing well and show people that I do not just draw, but that I know how to sing and
