When one thinks of Disneyland, they usually associate it with the phrase “Happiest Place On Earth.” Disney lovers of all ages travel from around the world to Anaheim, California to have the ultimate disney experience; to ride disney themed rides, meet characters, and experience spectacular parades and light shows. But is Disneyland really enjoyable for all ages? For children, it’s a little slice of heaven and parents seem to enjoy it too;even the elderly walk around disneyland with smiles on their faces. Even before you enter Disneyland itself, it feels as if you are in a Disney movie. As soon as they scan your ticket and you walk through the booth, you are welcomed by a huge flower display that is in a shape of a Mickey Mouse, and if you’re lucky you might meet a character. Once you walk past the flowers, you hit Main Street USA. Main Street USA looks like it’s straight out of a movie; they have a city hall where you can get pins, stores galore, and characters at just about every corner. As you move about the amusement park, each area has an individual theme. Some of the theme areas include Tommorrowland, New Orleans Square, Fantasyland, and Mickey’s Toontown. Each area has its own set of rides, music, and food which gives Disneyland a unique atmosphere. Disneyland as a whole is designed to bring joy to those who attend and by playing the right kind of music, using bright and cheerful colors, and having classic Disney characters walking around, they easily achieve this goal. Today Disney World has 4 theme parks and 2 waterparks. Magic Kingdom is one of the theme parks. It has many attractions, entertainment, dining, and events and tours. Some big attractions that Magic Kingdom has today are Big Thunder Mountain Road the most popular roller coaster. It also has Cinderella’s Castle located on Main Street U.S.A. The castle is standing at 189 feet tall. Surrounding the castle is a moat, grass, rose bushes, and a wishing well. At night it is a big attraction because over 16 million colored lights light up Cinderella’s Castle also with fireworks going over top of the castle. Magic Kingdom also includes The Hall of Presidents. It is a media presentation of 43 presidents showing their figures. Magic Kingdom is also known for their ride called Splash Mountain. It is a 5 story high log ride, and it has 950,000 gallons of water. During the ride their is many dips and curves. When you enter this ride expected to get soaked. Magic Kingdom has a great restaurant called Be Our Guest based off of Disney Movie Beauty and the Beast. It is a quick service restaurant, and you are bound to be pleased. Magic Kingdom is filled with many other cafe’s and restaurants you don’t want to miss. Another Theme Park at Disney World is Epcot. 1 big attraction Epcot has is The Circle of Life. It is a lesson that Simba off of Lion King teaches about keeping the environment good. It is a animation and live action, it is sure to keep you entertained. At Epcot you can talk with Crush the turtle off of Finding Nemo. You can ask Crush questions and he will reply he swims up right next to you. Here at Epcot you can meet many Disney characters including: Mickey Mouse, Belle, Aladdin and Jasmine, Donald Duck, and many other characters. Everything in the parks is done for family, joy, and, of course, magic (Elias 1). Milt Thurman is a Disney fan that has said that Disney “is a nice, safe place to be” and that “it’s not today; it’s not tomorrow, its forever. It’s just a great place (Stein 6).” Whenever somebody walks into the parks, there is always a feeling that is great. The feeling of love, compassion, hope, and belief in the future are the feelings that people get when walking into the parks each time. This feeling comes from the cast members and the park as a whole. As people walk into the parks, the first thing seen is the bright colors, smiling faces of everyone, and also the characters. The whole idea of having fun, being excited, having hope and falling in love is what everyone wants (Stein 3). People instantly fell in love with Disneyland because it took them into a world of fantasy for a chance to relax and become part of the stories associated with their childhood memories of watching the Disney movies (Stein 1). It’s pretty sad when I dream of the “happiest place on earth” and it turns into a nightmare. Disney acts as a drug that affects people’s perceptions on life. People would quit college and their well paying jobs just to join the Disney “cult.” I have friends back in Orlando who didn’t go to college just so they could keep their employment. Walt Disney World is a popular culture site that I have loved and respected ever since I went in 2001. In the following pages I will be talking about the history behind Walt Disney World, the reason why it is popular, the ideology that Walt Disney World reflects, the pleasurable aspects of Walt Disney World, and how gender norms that are seen at Walt Disney World. All of these ideas will be covered, discussed, and researched. Along with these ideas I will be delving into why I hold a love for Walt Disney World and how Walt Disney World lured me into loving them for more than 14 years. I will also go into how the gender norms that are at Walt Disney World reflect my own gender identity.
So have you ever been to Disney World? Most of you probably have been there. I didn’t go to Disney World until November of last year with my family. I wasn’t sure what it would be like, but it was incredible. It was a lot of fun, and it was a great experience because I was with my family.
Disneyland marked the onset of theme parks in the nation, which was carved out of a fantasy tale and it has been the leader for 60 years. And, there was virtually no competition to the attraction quotient that attracted people and tourists to visit the theme park.
According to the website dreamsunlimitedtravel accessed on November 16 2015, “The park opened with 5 original parks. Those parks are Main Street U.S.A, Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland.” The idea for Main Street, U.S.A is derived from a typical Midwest town of the early 20th century. It’s suppose to reflect the Victorian era with a train station, emporium, double-decker buses, and horse-drawn streetcars. Adventureland is designed to recreate the feel of an exotic tropical place in a far-off region of the world. Frontierland recreates the setting of pioneer days along the American frontier. And finally, the Fantasyland was originally styled in a medieval European fairground fashion, but its 1983 refurbishment turned it into a Bavarian village. There have been 3 new parks added to Disneyland since opening day. These new parks include New Orleans square, Critter Country, and Mickey's Toontown. New Orleans Square is based on 19th-century New Orleans, opened on July 24, 1966. Critter Country opened in 1972 and formerly was the area home to Indian Village, where indigenous tribespeople demonstrated their dances and other customs. Mickey's Toontown opened in 1993 and was partly inspired by the fictional Los Angeles suburb of Toontown in the Touchstone Pictures' 1988 release Who Framed Roger
One of the main ideas Disney dreamed of was to have an amusement park of his own. “The building of Disneyland in 1955 was a dream come true for Disney… he was able to create a fantasy world for both adults and children”(The State Historical 6). All Disney wanted was to give everyone who watched his cartoons a chance to meet the characters in real life, so their dreams could come true too. To Walt Disney, Disneyland was a place where his characters could come to life and little kids could meet their favorite characters and just have fun. Disney designed Disneyland with inspiration from Marceline, Missouri. “Disney based his ‘Main Street, USA,’ upon the streets of small town America, particularly the buildings in downtown Marceline, Missouri”( The State Historical 6). Marceline was his favorite place, it is where he grew up and began to draw. Basing his theme park off of his home town made it have more of a small town feel to it, unlike the normal theme parks big city feel to it. Disneyland was like a second home to Disney since it was all based off of his favorite place in the world, Marceline, Missouri. Disneyland started out small but soon after the big opening it became a worldwide tourist location. Disneyland was such a big success he wanted to make another on the other side of the country, but he ended up dying before he could finish it; So, his brother finished it for him and named it Walt Disney
The second I stepped foot onto the amusement park’s property, I could feel the magic swirling all around me. As I walked through the crowds of people young and old wearing Disney apparel and Mickey Mouse ears, everything seemed so enchanting: the cheerful music, the twinkly lights on all of the buildings, and the stores that could have been from my favorite Disney movies. Walking along the streets, I took pictures of everything around me because I did not want to forget a single detail; I took pictures of the vibrant yellow, red, and pink flowers that lined the streets, the buildings with intricate details and designs, and the massive roller coasters that glided so swiftly on their tracks. The air was filled with heavenly scents of sweet churros, and I had to get one; it was delectable. Everything at Disneyland seemed perfect and like it was out of a movie. Even as I was about to leave, I got drawn back in; spectacular, bright, colorful fireworks started bursting right over my head, and I could not bring myself to go.
