Beowulf

Beowulf is an epic poem written in England. No one is sure what year it was written or who wrote it, but many speculate that it was written around 1000 AD by a Christian scribe. The poem began as stories, or folk-tales, being told through the generations until a talented poet finally wrote it down.

The poem takes place in the late fifth century in Scandinavia. The main character is a hero of the Geats named Beowulf. Beowulf represents the Germanic code of comitatus. This code existed between the king, his lord, and his thanes. The thanes of Scandinavia swore loyalty to their king, to fight for him even if it resulted in death. Beowulf had courage, loyalty, and a reputation that made him well liked and a great leader.

The poem spans three great battles that Beowulf fights. The first battle is against the monster Grendel who is terrorizing King Hrothgar, of the Danes, and his people. Beowulf fights the battle with courage and skill, calling on his strength and fellow warriors for aid. He defeats Grendel, and saves the Danes from death and destruction. In order to kill her he must have the courage to go to her underwater cave to defeat her. It takes him nine hours to reach the bottom and defeat her. King Hrothgar and some of his men decide to go back to the castle, thinking that Beowulf was dead, but Beowulf’s men decide to stay and wait for their leader, believing that he was alive. This alone shows the loyalty that they had for Beowulf. It also shows what it means to be a great leader. They followed someone who could follow the king, even to death, and who had outstanding courage and loyalty to their country and people.
