Animals Used for Experimentation

Animal Research has become very dominant leading to over 25 million animals being involved. The issue regarding if this tactic is proper is controversial. Animal testing can lead to new treatments for certain diseases, such as breast cancer or childhood leukemia. However, many downsides play into the fact that animals are being used for scientific research. Animal experimentation should not be allowed and takes part in using cruel aspects such as deprivation of food and water which can lead to a decreasing population in specific species of animals.

Animal testing is cruel and painful. An example of when an animal has been put into a harmful instance is during an experiment in which “rabbit eyes were held by

clips which resulted in incapacitated.” This shows that many biologists put animals in danger or into an uncomfortable stage.
Many believe that animals and humans share similar body systems or structures, but do not realize the key differences between the two. These refer to metabolic, cellular, and anatomical differences. According the Paul Furlong, who is a well-known professor at Clinical Neuroimaging at Aston University, "it's very hard to create an animal model that even equates closely to what we're trying to achieve in the human."
Accuracy is not guaranteed by animal experimentation. Medications could show no effect on the body of an animal, but result in a negative approach on humans. A study involving pregnant mice and rats showed that birth defects did not occur with the animals, but did in fact happen with humans. In fact, “94% of drugs that pass animal tests fail in human clinical trials. “This leads to proving the point that animal experimentation does not lead to predicting accurate results for humans.
Animal experimentation is very expensive and other approaches could be taken that would provide more benefits. These include artificial human skin or using glass testing. Glass testing costs “$11,000, which is less than $21,000 than a DNA synthesis would cost.”
Animal testing results in suffering, expenses, and false information. A large number of lives of animals are wasted due to experimentation. Animal testing should not be allowed to continue and the issues need to be addressed regarding the hazardous conditions towards animals.
