“Would you eat it?” A simple question expressing so much. As most know, and have probably experienced, school lunches are not as high quality as they could be. Though the federal government emplaced many rules and regulations regarding school lunches, the food served, in reality, isn’t healthy, visually appealing or flavorful and should be improved. As a student, it is quite disappointing to see there are no fresh fruit/veggies or good quality food available. “Schools should offer more healthy options, fresh food and less junk food” (Blais). What is being served is impalpable. It all comes back down to the same four word question, “Would you eat it?”. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. healthy meal yet don’t understand the importance of lunch. Lunch is every bit as important. Statistics show that students who eat unhealthy lunches are more likely to score lower on tests, and struggle with school work. The properly balanced lunch meal plays a major role in having a healthy lifestyle. After a long morning of head-pounding classes, every student deserves a delicious, healthy lunch that fills the belly, giving a boost of energy to continue the day to the best of their ability and improving the overall salubriousness in the school environment. Other than mental health amelioration, greater quality school lunches would greatly influence childhood obesity. It’s all over the news, in the top magazines and even on TV. With one out of three kids and teens suffering from this quickly climaxing disease there are many efforts being done to decrease this epidemic. Obesity is caused from unhealthy diets and little to no exercise. This is basically when the total calories consumed overpower the total calories used over a long period of time. With healthier school lunches, children will easily be able to choose against the greasy junk food. After all, it is hard for kids to make healthy choices when the “nutritious” lunches do not meet the right standards. Jamie Oliver, an English chef, began a “Food Revolution” by first traveling to public schools in West Virginia. His mission was to improve the quality as well as haleness of the food served and has proved it is possible to turn around school cafeterias. With those schools still implementing the changes made, Jamie plans on continuing to revolutionize the image behind school lunches in America. All public schools should use the changes made to the West Virginia schools as a guide to how they themselves can improve their lunch quality and innovative ways to do so. Yes, fresh ingredients, fruit, veggies, and other higher quality food will be more expensive and it is realized that money doesn’t grow on trees, yet an effort must be made. Unless America wants to become, if not already, a country of incapable obese citizens, it needs to invest in its future generations. Children are the future and all decisions need to be made with them in mind.“Now is the perfect time to make a powerful change- your willingness is at an all-time high”(Bernstein). Make a change for the future generations of Steve Jobs and Albert Einsteins lurking in the shadows.
Janet Poppendieck is a professor of sociology at Hunter College in New York, and additionally she is the author of several books including her most recent Free for All: Fixing School Food in America. This book centers on America’s recent interest in whether or not our school lunches are healthy. This issue has been put into the spotlight recently through shows such as Jamie Oliver’s School Food Revolution and in the news because recent changes in the Nation School Lunch Program’s dietary guidelines. Poppendieck’s book looks at the in depth reasons into why school lunches have turned into what they are today, what challenges need to be faced in order to fix school lunches, and ultimately how our the system should be fixed. She accomplishes this by interviewing her current college students about their previous school lunch experiences, working in a school cafeteria, interviewing current school employees, and looking at the history and policies of the National School Lunch Program.
Schools are meant to give our children a healthy and nurturing environment, and yet so much of the lunches in schools are fattening; does this stop schools from achieving the aforementioned goal? Childhood obesity in the United Sates continues to be a growing problem despite so any new programs to help combat it, and new research is showing how schools may be playing a large role in childhood obesity. School lunches are showing to be the problem, they encourage poor nutrition in our nation’s students, and simple reform is proving to not be enough to stop the rise in obesity rates.
I don't think our school lunch is healthy because it has fat and too much sodium. Although it is good it is fattening it is the reason for much of the obesity in the U.S. Many kids have no other option to eat the unhealthy school lunches or they will be hungry.
One reason our school should get a new lunch menu is many students do not like the food served. For example, a survey was taken and of the 31 students 100% said they disliked the food. As student Bryan Huang said, “The lunches are horrible, they need better choices and more choices.” In other words, the food is not delicious and there are not many choices. Also, when children don’t get proper nutrition they have trouble focusing in school. Most students do not buy lunch because they feel it is unappealing and do not like the food served. Many students go to other kids and ask for food. In addition, many students do not eat breakfast so they rely on lunch to fuel them for the day. But, if they do not like the food served they won’t eat so they starve for the rest of the school day, which can

School lunches have created a chronic problem in a school setting, and since it hasn't been fixed, 6-11 year olds have had a 17% increased chance of becoming obese (Centers for Disease control and Prevention). Most school districts don't even bother changing the food restrictions just so they can please their students. Unhealthy school lunches are a huge problem among children in the United States, it can cause obesity, stress, and many other problems.

Choices at lunch range from greasy to unidentifiable. Most students eat school lunches five days a week. So most of the food they eat throughout the week comes from the school cafeteria. Although, the schools do tend to offer healthy choices such as salads, subs, skim milk, and unlimited fruits and vegetables. “Each week Phoenix students are served a variety of fruits and vegetables from guava to grapes and jicima to red peppers. School officials hope that by exposing children to fruits and vegetable they may develop a taste for them and request their parents to buy them.”(Bailey, 1). Real meat is becoming an issue in schools. “According to reports issued by the Physicians Committee for responsible Medicine (PCRM) the USDA dumps hundreds of millions of pounds of surplus beef, chicken, cheese, and pork on the National School lunch Program.”(Lord, 42). Wholesome lunches are vital in maintaining a healthy metabolism and give children energy for the rest of the school day. Why can’t we leave campus for lunch? I would enjoy being able to leave campus for lunch. I think that we should be given the right to leave campus for lunch. Even tho it may not seem right to the principle or the school board I choose to believe we could be trusted to leave campus for lunch everyday. I have also learned that our school is a completely closed campus meaning that you can’t leave the school the entire day.
Thirty one million kids nationwide eat school sponsored meals twice a day for a hundred eighty days and on average for twelve years. In this sense school lunches are an important and critical component of childhood nutrition and development. Yet these meals are highly processed and filled with chemicals and preservatives. School lunch rooms are essentially fast food restaurants; they unload shipments of frozen food then heat it up in glorified microwaves and serve it hot and ready. This is the same basic principle of fast food restaurants and people all know how terribly unhealthy fast food is for them. Still America feeds this toxic material to kids every day. This has been a tremendous issue for years but it is more devastating now than ever before.
When the United Sates federal government set new regulations on what schools had to provide for lunch for their students, a lot of people weren’t pleased with what was happening. Especially when students started complaining of hunger after having had their school provided lunch. With the new regulations, the price of lunches went up. The new rules made eating lunch from school more expensive and it made it clear that most students, especially elementary, won’t or refuse to eat the healthier foods. Obviously, the school systems were going to need to find a way to ease their students into eating the healthier foods that they now needed to offer. The federal government used Michele Obama to promote eating healthier and getting active, but the program for healthier school lunches was called a failure after some time. There are so many things that people could say about the new rules regarding school lunches, but all of those things would result in nothing. When our government set these rules on school lunches, there was no fighting what was currently happening and no going back on what we were accustomed to.
With the implementation of the “Healthy Kids Hunger-Free Act” schools are not serving as many lunches and participation is decreasing. Walking to the cafeteria is like walking, or running, in a marathon. If I could make a significant change to the structure or appearance to my school, I would add a cafeteria hallway for the middle school. First, students and staff members would not have to walk as far to eat lunch. Most staff and students have to walk down the stairs just to go get their lunches. Second, staff members and students would have much longer lunches.
Breakfast is clearly a critical meal in our everyday diets and health. Eating breakfast aids in our nutrition by influencing our mental, physical and emotional health. There are many different healthy breakfast options that can kick start your day. In the morning breakfast immediately raises our energy level and starts our day off on the right foot. Start your day right by simply eating a good, nutritious breakfast! With all of this being said out of all three meals breakfast is by far the most important.
