A Long Journey of Reflections
“I learned from the age of two or three that any room in our house, at any time of the day, was there to read in, or to be read to. My mother read to me” (Welty). Growing up, I remember my mom would always take me to the library and teach me how to read. My parents always encouraged me to read and write, which is why I never had a problem in writing papers. The only problem I do have is that it takes me a maximum amount of hours to write a decent paper. Writing a paper can seem intimidating at first because it is hard to actually come up with a proper thesis. But putting together a strong paper really just involves a combination of steps one already knows how to do. As I attended Mission College for English 908 with Professor Alvarez she taught me how to process my thoughts. Professor Alvarez taught me the process in writing a research paper, narrative paper and a reflective essay. In English 908 one could learn the steps of writing a clear focus thesis statement, a formal outline and what it takes to brainstorm.
In general English 908 requires every student to submit a portfolio that has a research paper, an in-class essay and a reflective essay. Through the research paper in the portfolio I learned the concept of a thesis statement. The goal in each paper is to become an effective writer. For example in my research paper I was to come up with a campus problem at Mission College, but my weakness was writing a thesis statement. The thesis statement I wrote for the research paper was long and unclear, but Professor Alvarez advised me to make my thesis statement straight to the point. She told me the simpler the statement is the easier it will be for the reader to understand the point of the essay. I ...

...always encouraged me and therefore, I am interested in reading and writing. “I have often reflected upon the new vistas that reading opened to me. I knew right there in prison that reading had changed forever the course of my life” (Malcolm X). There are still many things I lack in, such as, patience in writing an essay. I like to just write an essay and get it over with. I definitely need to work on how to write a well detailed essay. In my opinion I am a well writer if I am truly interested in a certain subject then I am determined to have the best paper. However, since I do get a bit impatient I do not achieve to the top place. I know if I work on some minor matters when writing a paper, I can be very successful and get to the A+ mark. All in all knowledge is never useless in life which is why I consider every English 908 assignments worthwhile.

As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.

Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. As time goes by, I noticed how reading and writing became one of my weaknesses. Having an assignment readings and writing an essay about it was one of the things I don’t like doing. I am not sure if there are any valid reason on why I don’t like it but all I know is there is always a point where I end up getting stuck because I do not know what else to say. Also, reading gets deeper and some of the words are hard to understand especially when some of the readings use metaphors. However, in every essay I turned in, I always look forward on all of my teacher’s comments because I always want to know what else I am missing, what else to say, and how to improve it. I guess in this case, Sherman Alexie and I are opposite towards our view on writing but we are the alike on the view of learning and improving.
When writing a paper the process can vary from a few hours to several days. English teachers have several different ways they teach their students how to write as well as the method to use. Knowing the perfect way to prepare to write for a paper takes several years to master. Once you know what method works best for you, writing becomes less stressful. Before I prepare to write a paper I look at the prompt. I then take a smoking break so while I am smoking I am brain storming ideas about what to write about. When I get an idea I write them down one by one as I get ideas. Once I find the perfect spot I start looking at what I brain stormed and look at the main ideas I can write the most about. Once I choose what I want to write about I start structuring my paper. When I see the best structural fit for my sub ideas that lead to my main idea I start writing. Then when I am done I revise it with another smoking break, which helps me see if I can expand on the ideas I already have. If not I just wrap up my paper knowing it was a great well written paper that I gave all my thought into and knowing my professor is going to love my paper.
In an exploratory study conducted by Holmes and Scaffa, the level of competency needed for emerging practice and the methods utilized to gain competency was determined (2009). 23 newly certified occupational therapists, working in emerging practice settings, participated in three rounds of an anonymous questionnaire using the Delphi method. Based on the responses from the participants, entry-level occupational therapists would need to have a fundamental understanding of the practice theories and the knowledge of incorporating occupation-based intervention across different practice settings (Holmes & Scaffa, 2009). High school has been a very interesting experience for me. It has definitely had its highs and lows and many confusing experiences in between. Overall, I feel like I have been equipped for not only college, but also life as a whole. High school has taught me many things, both academically and emotionally. It has revealed and exposed my true colors, both good and bad, and as a result, has built many aspects of my character. My experiences at Alameda High school and Alameda Community Learning Center have shaped me into the person that I am today.
Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.

Life is all about experiencing new thing and learning new information along the way. Prior to walking into the class for the first time I was nervous because I did not know what to expect. I knew that it would branch off of the English 101 class that I took the semester before, but I still did not know what to expect. As soon as the class started on the first day I knew that I would enjoy my time. Starting everyday off with a random question allowed me to think very hard about something so simple.
Thesis statements are the opening sentence that explains what you will be talking about in your writing. See how my thesis statement was, “Is essay writing is one of the important skills that schools teach?”. I clearly explained what I will be talking about in my writing. Also note that I posed a question rather than a statement. This leaves readers wondering what the answer is and allows a more interactive approach.
“I met someone who can help you get an English 10 class.” Those were the words that echoed through my mind after the last day of enlistment. It was because of this person, whom my mother met, that I was able to enrol in this class. It was actually better than taking Fil 40, mainly because I have actually struggled with Tagalog in the past. What did change that language difficulty was the fact that I would have to write papers. The first week of class started well with a diagnostic essay which I was able write and get neutral feedback. But soon I realized that the diagnostic essay was nothing compared to what I had to go through in order to produce the best papers I could write for the class; this was because writing any academic paper is no joke to be taken lightly.
This critical reflection will analyse a therapy group I attended called ‘hearing voices peer support group’. It enables consumers with schizophrenia to share their experience with hearing voices in a safe and respectful environment. This allows them to access support and advice from each other in coping and work towards gaining greater control over what is happening to them.
