Can taking exams cause much stress on students? There is such thing as exam stress. The stress includes disturbed sleep patterns, tiredness, worrying, irregular eating habits, increased infections, and inability to concentrate (Dunford, 2014). Would our society be better off without final exams? A final exam is an examination administered at the end of an academic term. Neil DeGrasse Tyson once said, “The only way you can invent tomorrow is if you break out of the enclosure that the school system has provided for by the exams written by people who are trained in another generation (year).” What he is trying to say is that we need innovation within our school systems. We cannot base our tests and exams off the same exact thing every single year. Our students are being taught the test and not the actual subject. The tests are normally from a long time ago and they are just re-used and something needs to be changed about that. Our school systems need to start using alternatives to the final exam. There are alternatives to the typical academic testing out there and school systems need to start using other methods to measure the retention and performance of their students.
The first thing you need to know about exams are they are causing way too much stress among students of any level of school. Stress is one of the body’s natural responses to something that is threatening or frightening. We all experience this feeling sometime in our lives. Sometimes it can be for a good reason and sometimes the opposite. There is good stress and there is also bad stress. Bad stress can cause you to not perform at your highest level possible and it impairs your abilities (Exam Stress, 2014). Research is showing that college students are stressed t...

...re equalized out, the grade earned only gives a short glimpse of a performance on one day that really could be tested throughout the year with the other alternatives that were listed above.
There are so many other ways to test students and children now a days and our school systems need to start innovating. They need to stop using stuff from past years and learn to teach the kids new and more productive ways. Our students are being taught the test and not the actual subject. Our school systems need to start using alternatives to the final exam. There are so many alternatives to the typical academic testing and final exams that are being given. I hope that over the years, in the near future, schools start going away from the exams and use the options of alternatives. It may be generations away, but it would be beneficial to all school systems and future students.
This is precisely the problem. Standardized tests are old and outdated, and the harm they cause to America’s education system by far outweighs the benefits. These tests were intended to monitor and offer ways to improve how public schools function, but instead they have impaired the natural learning ability of students and imposed upon the judgment of experienced educators. Although a means to evaluate the progress of public schools is necessary, it is also necessary to develop more modern and effective ways of doing so. Standardized testing mandated by the federal and state governments has a negative effect on the education of America’s youth.
In “More Testing, More Learning,” Patrick O’Malley presents his argument in the essay of why taking major exams at the end of a student’s course harms them more than it does the student any good. O’Malley states that, “Although the last*minute anxiety about midterm and final exams is only too familiar to most college students, many professors may not realize how such major, infrequent, high-stakes exams work against the best interests of the student psychologically and cognitively.” (483) With taking midterms and final exams O’Malley claims that it puts too much stress and too much importance one the one or two days of these major tests than in the students entire term. His argument is that with less tests given to the student takes away from
One time I heard a teacher at my old high school tell a new teacher that their job is to teach to the test and nothing else. I did not really know what she meant, but I knew something about what she said sounded very wrong. I thought why are they just teaching us how to pass the test instead of just teaching us what we need to know? Later I found out that whether or not I graduate depends on passing the test. The idea of standardized testing to say whether or not students graduate is a bad one. Not just bad for schools, principals, and teachers, but it can mean the end of a student’s future before it begins. That means not only does schools suffer, but everyone in our communities, states, and country suffers. It used to be that students had to take standardized tests every year. The results of these tests said what school districts would get more money or less money for the next school year. And it would also tell schools and teachers if some students needed to be put into higher level programs such as gifted and talented or advanced placement courses or if they were having problems and should be put in special education.
An author’s way of writing and portraying a character are one of the important things to note when reading a novel. Whether they use third or first person as their view point, have their main character have an underlying dark secret that is not revealed until the end of the novel. However an author wishes to write their novel, there is always a drawback to it. Kazuo Ishiguro’s way of writing his novel Never Let Me Go is in a first person perspective where the narrator, Kathy H., reassess her life of being a clone but the way Kathy remembers and discusses her memories of living in Hailsham is hindered by the fact she inputs her own feelings and thoughts into what happened in the past.
As a college student, is the idea of your final grade being based off of just a midterm and final very stressful? O 'Malley argues in his essay "More Testing, More Learning" that professors should give out more quizzes and assignments to reduce the stress and procrastination students face before midterms and finals. Although this might be helpful for a high school setting, it would not be completely efficient at a college level. This is because frequent testing takes up a significant amount of students and professors time, are added stress throughout the year, will not fix a students procrastination, and having high stake tests prepares students for their future. Some of O 'Malley 's ideas seem reasonable and would help students while others are an inconvenience for the professor and students.
Students spend the majority of their time preparing for standardized tests, instead of spending their time learning. In addition, standardized tests give students anxiety, and could lead them to want to drop out of high school due to all of the stress. I believe that standardized tests should not carry so much weight in the education system. They should serve as checks of the educational system rather than as a determinant of the future of
Standardized testing is not an effective way to test the skills and abilities of today’s students. Standardized tests do not reveal what a student actually understands and learns, but instead only prove how well a student can do on a generic test. Schools have an obligation to prepare students for life, and with the power standardized tests have today, students are being cheated out of a proper, valuable education and forced to prepare and improve their test skills. Too much time, energy, and pressure to succeed are being devoted to standardized tests. Standardized testing, as it is being used presently, is a flawed way of testing the skills of today’s students.
The rallying call to end high school exit exams is not only a display of America’s failing attitude to education, but also a way to ensure American students are doomed in higher education levels. National exit exams would not harm the overall education standards, but rather would give a reason for students and teachers alike to crack down and get to work. So instead of making excuses it is about time for the American education system to set a standard for students to reach for, not one that is just walked over like the one that has so sadly failed this new generation.
In conclusion, I believe that students should not have to take an exit exam to pass school. Some kids have good grades, but do not test well. Exit exams take away student's individuality. Year end tests waste time that could be being used to teach students. Even though tests prepare students for the future, most careers do not require many tests. Exit exams are not needed for
The common statement “Beauty is pain” is something a girl would completely understand. We understand it and accept it because we know the final product of our hair, face or body will be worth whatever pain we put it through. Maybe there is truth to this statement because everyone has tried some kind of diet where we select the salad instead of that amazing cheeseburger. These sacrifices can be pretty painful, but we continue to give in knowing we will improve our overall health. Exercising, which is another sacrifice made to better our health, can also be extremely painful and any person that has ever gone on a hard run knows exactly what that pain is. But, in addition to getting your body in shape, running goes beyond toning and strengthening muscles or loosing a few pounds. Running has so many benefits that many people don’t even know about. As little as thirty minuets of running during the week can do wonders for a persons health. (Allen, 2014) That doesn’t sound too painful now, does it? In fact, running benefits a person’s mind, body, and age.
Standardized testing stresses out students as well as teachers. Outstanding teachers quit teaching because of the stress on their shoulders to prepare their students for test (colubia.edu). Test taking has negative physical effects on even the hardest working students according to Gregory J. Cizek, whose profession is to research education. In addition, the Sacramento Bee reports that the Stanford-9 test comes with directions on what to do with an exam book if a
These pressured Common Core tests cause intense amounts of stress, lead to test anxiety, and harm the mental health of both the teacher and test-taker. Stated by USNews, "Increased pressure on students has resulted in more test anxiety.
Students get way to much anxiety over this test. Some students get to worked up over this test. Some students have to take medicine to calm them down before taking this test. I don’t feel like a student needs to take pills before beginning a test. Also some students aren’t ready or prepared to take the test that day and when students tend to feel like that they don’t pass the test.
For example, Jasmine Evans states “the pressure placed on students to perform well ends up impeding the very thing standardized tests are designed to assess: how much students know,” this further explains my point because the amount of tests students get, gives many anxiety since each test carries an immense amount of pressure. Therefore giving countless quantity of tests to students actually contradicts the learning process and the statistics pulled from those tests would be faulty. The stress and anxiety created by tests isn’t limited to teenagers, as it can affect college students also. Valerie Strauss reports from a professor at Eastern Illinois University, that a mother once told her “her son had burst into tears the night before the big end-of –year exam, saying he was afraid he wouldn’t be promoted to the next grade,” this proves how a student’s mental state and health are altered before an exam, causing a poor performance. On a personal level, I can connect with this women’s son because I have had 4 or 5 tests the same day on multiple occasions. The night before is always a late one, and even when I finally go to bed I’m constantly waking up throughout the night thinking about everything that can go wrong. Even if I study every night for a week leading up to the tests, I’m still stressing out about not studying enough for each
Academic stress can take complete control over the student enduring it. Researchers say that the most common form of anxiety causing academic stress is achievement anxiety. This type of anxiety is likely to occur when a student has a fear of failure in an academic related situation. However a report conducted in 2000, Research in Higher Education” showed that academic stress and achievement anxiety can have a positive effect on a students grades. This is because students are aware of the fa...
