There are 232 million identities stolen each year. Cybercrime is becoming more of a problem today than it ever has. In the course of one day, 1.5 million people will be hacked while on the computer. The United States and Russia have the highest rates for this crime. Terrorist groups often begin their attack by using cyber crimes. Nowadays people are getting more creative in the ways they commit cybercrimes. There are a few known reasons why people commit these crimes. Police and FBI agents are already busy with violent criminals, and trying to solve difficult cases; they just don’t have the time or resources to catch cyber criminals. Today’s generation does not understand how serious cyber crime can be. “Unless and until our society recognizes cyber bullying for what it is, the suffering of thousands of silent victims will continue.” (Cyber Quotes, 2014). All people need to be taught how to act against this crime and prevent it from happening to them.
Investigators have organized cyber crime into six categories with the most common form being "hacking". In this process a “hacker” will “hack” into a person’s computer and then will access private information. For someone to be able to do this they usually use a variety of software programs. Hacking is a felony in the U.S.
The most common type of cyber crime is theft. This crime is committed when a person violates copyrights and downloads things illegally. Many teens are guilty of downloading songs without paying for them, which is a form of cyber crime. One of the most terrifying types of cyber crime is cyber stalking, this includes harassment and a violation of privacy. Most cyber stalkers are older men, who are preying on teen girls. “You’re not as safe as you think you are. Hackers around the world are working right now to take whatever they can get in the Wild West of the web. Luckily, you aren’t helpless. Take a look at cybercrime by the numbers, and consider what you can do to protect your data, your security, and your identity online.” (6 Great, 2014). Clearly, it would be expected that people would be scared and more careful about what they do on the computer, but some people just have a way of thinking, “it will never happen to me”, and that is not the way to think at all. If you are careful then it might not happen to you but there is no way to be 100 percent safe when it comes to this. So the next time you get on the computer be careful what you click on and whom you talk to because you never know who is a criminal trying to bait you.
An author’s way of writing and portraying a character are one of the important things to note when reading a novel. Whether they use third or first person as their view point, have their main character have an underlying dark secret that is not revealed until the end of the novel. However an author wishes to write their novel, there is always a drawback to it. Kazuo Ishiguro’s way of writing his novel Never Let Me Go is in a first person perspective where the narrator, Kathy H., reassess her life of being a clone but the way Kathy remembers and discusses her memories of living in Hailsham is hindered by the fact she inputs her own feelings and thoughts into what happened in the past.
When it comes to cyber crimes we can’t put a face to the crimes being committed, it’s easier to find ways to prevent hackers from gaining access to important data than searching and putting them in handcuffs. Traditional police theories will not work for cyber crimes, so cyber police theories need to be developed.
Almost everyone everywhere in the world has either used or owned a computer. If there was an Internet connection, then they have all been connected together across that medium. But when you are just browsing the Internet or looking at your choice of social media site, did you know that you are getting attacked by some sort of malware or could be verbally assaulted by an individual? In Cyber Criminology: Exploring Internet Crimes and Criminal Behavior by K. Jaishankar, he describes all the ways people across the world are attacked everyday by some sort of malware or by an individual, such as a pedophile. Certain topics that will be discussed are subcultures in cyberspace, types of hackers/crackers, virtual sex offenders along with pedophiles, digital piracy, cyber victimization, and legal circumstances that occur when cyber crimes have been committed. We will dive deep into the secrets behind these attacks, the reasons for them, and statistics taken from researchers to show who commits these crimes and why they did so.

Even though these crimes are difficult due to privacy issues, the new technology has made investigations and prosecutions well organized and effective.

As businesses continually develop and expand their client base with online products and services so does the desire by criminals to exploit vulnerabilities in their e-commerce setup. The mass worldwide internet usage growth within the last 20 years has been “an approximate 16 million users in 1995 to an estimated 2,937 million in March of 2014” As the importance of e-commerce increases so does the need to protect the technological infrastructure that will carry out online transactions for each business regardless of its size. I will attempt to highlight and review the history of a few cyber crimes to show the progression of the crimes within the last 30-40 years. I also plan to review how the economy and consumers are impacted by cyber crimes. Finally I will make an effort to contribute with information gathering on how to lower the risk of a cyber attack from and individual user to a large scale business.

The Internet is a connection of computers across the world through a network. Its origin dates back to the 1960s when the U.S Military used it for research, but it became more available to the public from the late 1980s. The World Wide Web was created in 1989 and browsers began appearing in the early 1990s. Over the last 24 years, the Internet has enabled people to shop, play, do research, communicate and conduct business online. It has also become cheaper and faster in performing different tasks. As much as the Internet has done immeasurable good to society, it has also dominated people’s lives and brought with it an array of cybercrimes. According to Nicholas Carr in his book The Shallows: How the Internet is Changing the Way we Think, Read and Remember (Carr, 2010). He debates on whether the Internet has done more harm than good. People use the Internet daily to exchange accurate information and constantly personal data such as credit cards, passwords and Social Security numbers are travelling through the network from one computer to another. With security measures put in place on the Internet, personal information remains confidential. But unfortunately, criminals have adapted to innovations in technology, and today, more people are increasingly becoming victims of cybercrime. The Internet has had profound effects on the public, both positive and negative. In this paper we will examine how access to personal information has led to an increase in online and offline crimes. The essay will particularly focus on ecommerce and hacking.

Cybercrime is a global issue plaguing the world. The dictionary defines cybercrime as “crime conducted via the Internet or some other computer network”(Merriam-Webster). The definition remains very broad because the word “cyber” is defined as “relating to the culture of computers, information technology, and virtual reality.” Due to the growing number of people gaining access to the internet, rapid development of technology, and the globalization of the world, more of the world population is becoming susceptible to involvement in cybercrime – whether it be as a victim or a criminal. Cybercrime involves different levels of the world on both the victim and criminal side from an individual citizen, to small groups, businesses, and the government, to the countries of the world. There are different groups from law enforcement agencies to the U.S. Secret Service, that are attempting to combat the problem through cooperation and preemptive efforts. If these groups combined with the public to protect themselves and the country from criminals that commit cybercrime, the nation’s network and technology servers would be much safer for technology users. Clearly, cybercrime is a problem because it puts internet users at risk of being taken advantage of or harmed.
Today in present, with the improvements in technology and science new concepts are integrated in our lives. Cyber crime is among those concepts that did not exist 15 to 20 years ago. In the old days only conventional crime was discussed, which refers to those traditional, illegal behaviors that most people think of as crime. This project is interesting and beneficial because it enlightens one on the dangers of cybercrime, thus preparing individuals to know how to prevent attacks while online, how to reduce the effects of a cyber-attack and how to prevent future
