Research Analysis Report: Bullying and Children with ASD
The article I chose is on bullying of children with an autism spectrum disorder. It was published by the Interactive Autism Network (IAN), on March 26, 2012. It has since been revised on October 7, 2014. The research report was constructed by Connie Anderson, Ph.D., IAN Community Scientific Liaison. The final IAN study was published in the journal Autism in May 2014. The research conducted was intended to prove that children on the autism spectrum are bullied at a higher rate than other children. The participating parents were asked such questions as, if their child had ever been bullied. The results showed that 63 percent had in fact been bullied. They were asked questions about what type of school their child attends, such as public, private, special education, and so on. They were also asked if their child had ever been pushed into a meltdown. The results showed that of the different types of ASD, children with Asperger Syndrome were the most subjected to bullying. They theory was because these children are not as secluded from mainstream activities, they are more exposed to situations where bullying is possible.
The survey asked questions pertaining to children in the families who did not have any ASD. These children, though still subject to some bullying, were subject to bullying much less than children with ASD. They also asked questions pertaining to children with ASD bullying others. The results were surprisingly high. This raised further question about the intent behind the bullying done by children with ASD.
