When Brandon Long, a personal trainer from Long Beach, California, was asked what got him interested in personal training, he replied, “I guess it started with my love for exercising and seeing the changes that it makes on your body, mind, and confidence.” There are many reasons why people would want to become a personal trainer. They can be the person who helps someone meet his or her goals and makes them successful. They can be involved with all kinds of people in all kinds of sports. And finally, they also have the ability to work on their own and set their own schedule.
When most people think of a physical trainer the first thing one would think of would probably be a very strong and bulky man, but anyone can do this. (AFAA) The biggest skill you would need is to have the will power to never give up and battle through the pain. In order to be a successful personal trainer it is ideal to have excellent communication skills. You will need these because of the amount of people you are going to have encounters with. You will also need to have a lot of patience in case you have a patient that is slower than you or is struggling with one of the exercises. Another attribute for someone who is interested in the field is someone who is strong mentally and physically and enjoys working hard. It is someone who is not willing to give up and makes sure the tasks have been completed. The last skill needed is to have great listening skills. They need to be able to hear the patient and try to make a nice, comfortable conversation with them. The more relaxed the client is, the more comfortable they will be; and they will likely schedule more sessions.

Being a personal trainer is not for everyone. However, the ability to help someone with their goals, working with a variety of people, and the opportunity for a trainer to be his own boss and set his own hours makes this a great job to have in the future.

For this project, the certified athletic trainer who I have shadowed for almost eight hours in just one day is Candace O'Bryan, currently the athletic trainer at Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron. Candace has worked at Hoban now entering her third year at the high school. She works alone as a trainer there but works along side one team doctor who is at every game, and the other one being a neurosurgeon but is just a parent helping out.

Most jobs in athletic training field requires a bachelor degree from an accredited program but having a masters degree or a doctorate degree from an accredited program increases one’s chance of getting a better job or qualifying for an affluent position in one’s company. The general duties include assessment/diagnosis, rehabilitation, treatment and prevention of athletic injuries, and basic medical care. The specialized duties for an athletic trainer at the high school level will be very different than those at a professional level. This is due to a categorical distinction, as there is far more team funding at the professional level than in college or high school. A Physical therapist could be faced with a patient/client that might be angry, sad, or confused, so being able to relate to these individuals is a great quality all therapist must have. These personal traits are skills like being relaxed and determined, supportive, and of course knowledgeable.
Here are a few characteristics or traits you could have to make being a PT a lot easier. First is being compassionate for your patient and being concerned about their health. Detail oriented, being very observant when it comes to diagnosing a patient's needs and the treatments he or she may need. Being able to use your hands and feel comfortable massaging people and assist to their physical needs is called Dexterity. Interpersonal skills is also a great trait to have, according to bls.gov, “Because physical therapists spend a lot of time interacting with patients, they should enjoy working with people. They must clearly explain treatment programs, motivate patients, and listen to patients’ concerns in order to provide effective therapy.” Physical therapist spend a lot of time on there feet and they help patients do their exercises so physical stamina is a outstanding characteristic to have. They must be flexible and adapt plans of care to meet the needs of each patient.” Lastly, time management skills, PT’s treat a lot of patients each day in order to give each patient the proper time he/or she needs and get other task done throughout the day you need great time management skills(“Summary”).
Throughout my life, I have always loved physical fitness and athletics. Unfortunately, due to a horrible knee injury at the end of my senior year of high school’s basketball season, my athletic lifestyle came to a screeching halt.
