President Barack Obama was successful in reaching his intended audience by his use of rhetorical elements. Following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, President Obama addressed the need to reduce gun violence with the help of the nation and later began proposals to do just that. “Keeping with President Obama’s commitment to engage the American people in the process, the Vice President solicited input from citizens and organizations… [and] spoke with many groups about their ideas on curbing gun violence in the United States” (Now). O’Mara takes the tragic school shooting in Oregon as an opportunity to voice his opinion on the debate of guns. He clearly states his position and explains that gun violence has increased enormously because of the lack of command by the government and support from the public to speak out against it. A growing number of publicized tragedies caused by gun violence have caused a great stir in the American community. Recently, President Barack Obama has made proposals to tighten the regulation of and the restrictions on the possession of weapons in America to lessen these tragedies. Should the legislative branch decide in favor of his proposals, all American citizens who do or wish to own the type of weapons in question or who use current loopholes in existing policy would be directly affected. His proposals, which are to “require background checks for all gun sales, strengthen the background check system for gun sales, pass a new, stronger ban on assault weapons, limit ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, finish the job of getting armor-piercing bullets off the streets, give law enforcement additional tools to prevent and prosecute gun crime, end the freeze on gun violence research, make our schools safer with new resource officers and counselors, better emergency response plans, and more nurturing school climates, [and] ensure quality coverage of mental health treatment, particularly for young people,” have been cause for a large amount of recent debate (whitehouse.gov).
He mentions the very recent violence that occurred in Selma, Alabama; where African Americans were attacked by police while preparing to march to Montgomery to protest voting rights discrimination. Without mentioning this violent event that occurred a week prior, there would not be much timeliness to his argument, and it wouldn’t have been as effective. The timeliness of his argument gave the speech a lot more meaning, and it heightened the emotions of many who heard the address. He is appealing to the emotions of many American people, both Congressmen and ordinary citizens, to encourage them to support his cause. He reminds us of all of the Americans around the world that are risking their lives for our freedom. Obama created several executive orders in the attempt to track who has a firearm and why do they need one. Just with the use of a pen and paper, Obama was able to control the use of firearms with excessive background checks. Obama will try to make an argument that these executive actions were created to protect our children from gun violence. On the other hand, not a single order was created to control assault or high-caliber weapons. It is also safe to say that Obama believes that owning a firearm is a privilege.
