Renewable Energy: The Way of The Future Pollution and global warming are at the forefront of every ecologist and environmentalist minds these days. In addition, many nations across the globe have taken necessary steps in order to reduce their own carbon footprint on this planet. One of those possible measures is using a cleaner source of energy supply, rather than relying on fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas. These forms to energy are called renewable because unlike fossil fuels, the have an endless supply. Some of those include solar energy, wind energy, hydro-electrical energy, and finally nuclear energy. These are just some cleaner ways of energy production that we can use in order to reduce our pollution. In this paper I will discuss the following options in greater detail. I will point out what exactly each one is, the process of production into useable energy, as well as the pros and cons to each energy source. To begin, we will take a look at solar energy. Solar energy is exactly what is it, energy that comes from the sun. Solar energy is a process in which solar rays or the heat that the sun gives off is collected by solar panels made up off cells called photovoltaic (Toothman). These cells are made of silicon in its crystalline form and other semi conductive materials combined with it. When the sun light hits the silicon, the heat causes the electrons in the material to start moving freely. Then an electric field causes these electrons to move in a form of a current. By conducting that current we can siphon the electricity off into batteries, and store the energy made. There several advantages and disadvantages to this form of renewable energy. Today our society is using more energy than ever. With the increase in demand for energy, problems are presented that have to be addressed. One of the biggest and most prevalent problems is the need for clean, renewable, sustainable energy. On the forefront of these problems comes the following solutions: nuclear energy, hydro-electric energy, and photovoltaic energy. With the need of energy in today’s current world, exploring different ways of producing power are necessary. The differences and similarities of nuclear energy and alternative energy are important to look over and examine in depth, so that it is plain to see the positive and negative effects of energy production.
In chapter thirteen of our book, Environment by Raven and Berg, it shows us just how important renewable energy sources are. Currently the United States of America thrives on the use of fossil fuels and nuclear power. The main problems with these types of fuel are that they are both limited and can be extremely harmful to our environment. They cause global warming, air pollution, acid rain, and oil spills (Environment), and not only that, but in the grand scheme of things, these sources really aren’t even that cheap of a fuel source. There are many alternatives to these all but outdated fuel sources.
The prime advantage of this approach to harnessing solar energy is that the process is simplified by combining energy gathering and storage into a single step. This process is robust, stable and cheap. One limitation of this process is, while this is useful for heating applications, production of electricity would require another step using thermoelectric devices or producing steam to run a generator.
From the early times of human beings, trying to find ways to harness the suns energy for their daily lives , we have come long ways since the first solar panels now we have other ways to create energy but those aren’t safe they’re dangerous and hazardous to the environment. The future begins with change and we can’t do that if we’re still doing the same things to, burning fossil fuels and power plants are the main sources of today’s pollution. As has been noted, renewable energy resources can seriously impact society as a whole and provide for a safer and cleaner environment. Although renewable energy resources are usually more expensive than non-renewable energy resources, their benefits on the world outweigh any cost difference or accessibility concerns. Fossil fuels play an active role in polluting lands and the air that humans breathe, and for that reason they should be eliminated and replaced by renewable energy resources in the near future. Slowly but steadily the non-renewable resources that humans use everyday are disappearing, but they can put a stop to it by using renewable energy resources such as solar energy, wind energy, and hydropower energy. Renewable energy is the future of the world.
The issue of energy conservation and the search for new, cheap, renewable energy sources has taken center stage in politics and science in recent years. The different types of renewable and sustainable energy sources are very varied, and each have different advantages and disadvantages. However, before discussing the different advantages and disadvantages of renewable energy and renewable energy policies, it is important to first discuss what type of energy is being discussed under the umbrella of “renewable” or “sustainable” energy. First, solar energy is one type of energy that is commonly considered to be a renewable energy source, since the sun shines on the Earth every day (Haugen and Musser, 2012). Wind energy, captured by windmills in places of high winds can also be a form of alternative, sustainable energy. In terms of alternative energy for fuel, things like electric-gas hybrids and biofuel vehicles have been introduced as alternatives to vehicles that use fossil fuels to run. There are certainly disadvantages to using alternative energy sources-- colloquially, “green” energy sources-- but the benefits of using these alternative energy sources far outweighs the disadvantages.
Non-renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels and nuclear ores have a rate of replenishment on the order of millions of years. These are currently being used at a rate significantly greater than that of replenishment. Consequently, there is a finite reserve of non-renewable energy sources, and once these reserves have been emptied, alternative sources of energy must be used. Renewable energy sources replenish at a rate greater than they are consumed. Renewable energy sources include solar energy, some forms of biomass, tidal and hydropower and wind.
Using fossil fuels such as coal and oil is inefficient, dangerous, and otherwise a process that is known to eventually fail as a long lasting energy source. Yet, there is hope for the future of energy, this new hope has many shapes and forms, but requires a chance to be fully implemented in our everyday life. Such energy sources like solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, and hydro power are the key to our future. These energy sources are proven to be long lasting, safe, more reliable, and the next innovation. In short, all Americans should switch to renewable energy, resulting in a safer and more efficient world.
