Our minds are very complex. They allow us to imagine and believe things greater than we can sense. They allow us to be innovative and cutting edge. We are only limited to what can be understood by the mind. The possibilities are endless. This is what Descartes came to realize by saying “I now know that even bodies are not, properly speaking perceived by the senses or by the faculty of imagination, but by the intellect alone, and that they are not perceived through their being touched or seen but through their being understood.” His argument is sound and structured in a foundationalist way so that the understanding of his overall point that the mind and body are not always experiencing the same things, therefore the mind is not limited to the …show more content…

He uses this argument to enforce how complex the mind is. It goes beyond what is usually known. He says “It is hard and cold; it is easy to touch.” (pg. 67) This is the state that comes to mind when one thinks of raw wax. However, the argument gets broken down further when he says “I am bringing it close to the fire… the original shaped is disappearing, it is becoming liquid and hot; you can hardly touch it.. For whatever came under the senses… has changed yet the wax still remains.”(pg. 67) One asks themselves, what allows us to still say the wax is still itself even though the familiar shape has changed? One cannot deny the senses however the mind is what allows the senses to even be perceived. Descartes broke his argument down so that it can be followed easily. This method virtually diminishes any counterarguments because he is basing it all on examples that are easy to grasp and relate to. His conclusion was based on solid fact building stating with the basics of the senses and guiding to his deeper understanding of what all the mind is and how it is distinct from the body through the body’s physical
