Does Descartes program of radical doubt work? The short answer is No but two sentences do not make an essay so let’s dig deeper and try to find the source of why this program doesn't work. Rene Descartes is known worldwide as the father of philosophy. His views and ideas help shape the modern world. One of his more strange ideas was his program of radical doubt also known as Methodological Skepticism. Under the program of radical doubt, you are supposed to doubt everything that cannot be proven and pretty much getting rid of the idea of faith. Descartes came up with the idea of Methodological Skepticism in order to find the unshakable certainties and truth of the world. In order to find the concrete truths of the world, Descartes tried to remove all possible falsehoods by doubting anything that could be doubted.
If one takes Methodological Skepticism at face value, Descartes’ program of radical doubts would seem to make a lot of sense. Why would one believe something if they do not have concrete evidence of what they believe is true? Issues began to rise for Descartes’ ideology when you begin to understand how exactly human beings take in information. Human beings learn information by using our five senses and the way we view the world by using our five senses is not a concrete truths according to Descartes. Our …show more content…

At that moment, Methodological Skepticism begins to fall apart. When the way you absorb information is putting the question, nothing you see, hear or touch can be an absolute truth. In his goal for looking for absolute truth, Descartes found out that nearly nothing is absolutely true. In any situation, you can find doubt even if the doubt may be ridiculous. One of the only absolute truths that Descartes could find was the fact that he exists. One must exist in order to consider doubt and question ideas. That concept became known as Cogito Ergo
