After the Middle Ages, the Renaissance took place in 1350-1550. During this period, new ideas about cultures, arts and inventions formed. Art was one of the most influential out of cultures and inventions. With art, artists were able to exemplify realism, humanism, and secularism. Art did not just show paintings. It showed different views of the Renaissance. Art became a big influence during The Black Death (1347-1351). The plague killed about 19 to 38 million people and it caused people to start questioning the church or become deeply pious. Also, The Black Death was the beginning for people to become more secular, and self-focused. Another big problem that led to the cause of art was the Great Schism. It was humanism. From patriarch's original concept, his ideas grew into new mindsets of studying humans and humankind. After these ideals were taken place, artists started to display it in their painting. For example, Michelangelo created David (1501-1504) out of marble. Usually people would make sculptures for God and religion, but Michelangelo did not. He was showing the beauty of humans and that humans had power and were beautiful. Another example was Raphael’s painting, School of Athens (1509-1511). This painting showed balance, harmony, and order that represented the principles of the Classical Period. It also focused on the Greco-Romans. This piece of art represented famous ancient philosophers like Aristotle, and Plato, and many others. Humanism and individualism was a big part of the age of exploration in 1492. All monarchs started to send people to explore for new places and just for curiosity. They started to discover humanity and things in the name of God. Another thing that humanism and individualism both played a role was in the Protestant Reformation. Humanism and individualism started to bring out Lutheranism by thoughts of humans being important to life, along with a new thoughts of religion into the Renaissance. For the political view, it was different because it became more secular instead of everything based on the church. In the Northern Renaissance, religious aspects began to change where people became Christian humanists while the Italian Renaissance become more culture but not as religious as the Northern Renaissance. Some historians believe that there was a break between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, but others believe that there was not. There are evidences like art from the Middle to the Renaissance showing the continuation of the Middle Ages emerging with new concepts.
