The movie, “Remember the Titans,” directed by Boaz Yakin, is a motivational and team building movie among college athletes. The movie symbolizes two different races coming together as one unit and being together on a football team. The setting of the movie was in the year 1971, when segregation and racism was a very big problem in the United States. Although it has been 40 years since this movie was made, today we still see segregation among schools and sports in schools all over the country. The difference of segregation from 1971 to 2016 has not changed among people in the United States, as well as other countries. Even though segregation was terminated in 1954, we still see cases of segregation of people, politics, and sexes all over …show more content…
the United States. The scene I chose to analyze is when the football team just finished having practice for the third time in the same day.
Gerry Bertier, captain of the football team, and Julius Campbell, a very good defensive player, are caught arguing about the way the team is reacting with the new African American head coach and new colored players. They start arguing with each other about why each person is not holding up their part on the team. When Julius starts calling out Gerry for being a captain and not doing his job, Gerry has come to the realization that he has not been doing his job. Gerry’s “white buddies” have not been blocking for Rev, the African American running back, and Julius calls him out for it. Julius sees that there is segregation among the team but Gerry has not said anything about it. This scene is a very significant part in the movie because it shows how much Julius cares for him and his team. He wants the team to get along and for them to not have segregation among the …show more content…
players. Along with this scene in the movie, “Remember the Titans,” a lot of high schools and colleges across the United States still face the same problem with racism and segregation to this day. It does not have to relate to sports either, racism and segregation is still present in the business place, politics, among families. Segregation in politics is a big problem among the people of the United States. The Democratic and Republican parties are very divided in their beliefs, along with the people who vote for each party. The difference between the political parties is a very big problem because it segregates the voters among the United States. Because the political parties are so divided, the people who vote for their party are going to be dissociated from the opposing party. This is one reason why the American voters are so discriminated among the United States. Sexual segregation has become a bigger and bigger problem since this movie was released, more and more people are wanting to be either homosexual or transgender. The drive for them to be different has caused a lot of problems within countries around the world. People who do not support homosexuals or transgenders will reject them, which will cause problems in the future. That is why homosexual people and transgender people feel so different from everybody else, it is because they are rejected. Moreover, the difference between male and female roles in society have changed as well. Males are expected to make a lot of money to provide for himself or his family; while females are expected to cook, clean, and do everything else. Society has made females look like slaves or maids, while males do not have to do much of anything. This difference is probably a main reason why couples tend to struggle when they argue about who does what in the relationship. Racism: the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
Racism is a form of segregation that is an everyday problem in our world. Racism is different now than what it was in 1971. Some might consider it better than what it was, but in reality, things have not changed since 1971. African Americans have been treated very different from white people since the early 1900’s. One big problem with racism in the current year, 2016, is the way that policemen have been treating African Americans. This topic is controversial considering all the deaths of African Americans in the past few years. Some might say that the police were protecting themselves, while others will say it was just unfair for the victim since the victim was unarmed and following instructions. The topic is very argumentative and many people believe that the police are always right and we should not do anything about an unarmed death from a police officer. The segregation from this topic alone is a very big complication among the people of the United States. Segregation in schools is another obstacle when trying to fix segregation in the United States. Kids were raised by their parents, and their parents could have raised them in a way to reject other African American kids or transgender people. Kids being raised in that manner could be a problem for teachers and will make classes
a lot more difficult than they should be. Segregation as a whole is a very big stumbling block for the American people, rather it involves politics, sexual preference, or just people in general. “Remember the Titans” is a movie that shows responsibility, hard work, and teamwork; but the overall theme in the movie relates to problems we face in society today, how to get along with others and work together in a group. The reward for working hard and working together is much greater than not working together at all. “Remember the Titans,” shows us viewers that no matter what the circumstances are, we can all work together to get a common reward, unity.
African American’s still are thought to be discriminated against by law enforcement, according to recent scenarios which have occurred. For example, Eric Garner was seen to have been physically abused by police and many of the public believe this is because he was African American. Though racism is less common today, it is still relevant and apparent in society. Violence is still used by both individuals and law enforcement, as well as as a form of protest in some circumstances. Though there is still some violent-protests present today, for humanitarian reasons this form of protesting has become less common throughout all of the ethnic
The film Remember the Titans dramatizes the racial tension that still existed in the United States post Civil Right movement; it tells the story of Coach Boone (Denzel Washington) who is hired to coach a football team in a school that was forced to integrate. The fact that Coach Boone had the opportunity to fix some of the problems allows the movie to make the argument that one single person can make a difference even if the problem is racial tensions. Racial tensions were arising every day between team members because their school, T.C. Williams, became integrated. This brought a lot of questions to mind: Are all men created equal? Is it possible for a single person to make an impact on multiple people’s lives? Possibility is an understatement
The movie "Remember the Titans" is a character education filled film for all ages. To summarize, this movie takes place in the year nineteen seventy-one and follows the issue of racism. Two high schools in the town of Alexandria, Virginia are being integrated into an African American and Caucasian school, and that mix includes the football team. The movie follows the story of their development. At first, the two races sit, talk, and practice separate. After one practice camp, and one passionate coach, the boys learn to respect and become friendly with each other. However, after the two week practice camp is up and they go back to school, the rest of the high school does not understand why the football players have changed. However, the football
Remember the Titans is a film that was made in the year 2000, and it depicts many aspects of racial inequality. Racial inequality can be defined as discrimination based on race in opportunity for things such as socioeconomic mobility or access to certain goods and/or services. In the United States, this discrimination can have a strong effect on many aspects of society such as home life and employment. A large gap between Caucasians and African-Americans still exists in America. In this film, there are more white people than there are black people. In terms of major roles, there are about five black characters and more than fifteen white characters. Although the degree of importance of the black characters is pretty high, the quantity still does not compare to the white characters.
Walter Winchell once said, “Never above you. Never below you. Always beside you.” The movie Remember The Titans gives truth to this quote. Produced in 2000, this movie stars actors such as Denzel Washington, Will Patton and Wood Harris. One may think that this movie is just about football but its depth is so much more. Taking place in Alexandria, Virginia, race mixing is unheard of until 1971 when T.C. Williams High School is established. When the schools are integrated a new football coach is brought in and the community and students are not happy about it, as the new coach is an African American. This movie shows how people overcome adversity and unite as one to achieve a common goal.
Many Americans have seen or at least heard of the movie “Remember the Titans.” The classic film focuses on a school that is blending black and whites and taking on an African American head coach. The coach knows the importance of winning, but also knows the team must work together to get those wins and have respect for every single person in the locker room. Although coach Boone was still put in a tough situation with the school board and the community, he was able to lead his team, with the help of a white assistant coach, to an undefeated season. The team coming together is exactly what America does with sports. Most everybody can come together and enjoy sporting events. By saying “everybody”, that includes all races: white, black, Hispanic, Asian, and so on. Sports are America’s past, present, and
As Gerry and Ray start camp, they are friends as both are still racist. After the Gettysburg speech, Ray deliberately misses a block in a training exercise. The training is stopped as Gerry tells Ray the following quote: “What was that Ray? Whatever it is it ain’t blocking”. A split begins in Ray and Gerry’s relationship. Eventually, Ray misses a block in a game, causing a near-season-ending injury to Petey. Due to this, Gerry cuts Ray from the team. Ray walks off into darkness, clinging on to his racist beliefs as Gerry stays in the changing rooms, illuminated by light. As viewers, we can see the one person that is still racist being overwhelmed by the integrated community, which is juxtaposed from the start, where the integrated community is overwhelmed by the racist white community. As part of growing up, some people may not want to leave their childhood beliefs behind while others move on, which may cause a rift in beliefs and a breaking of friendship because people do not agree with who believes
The Civil Rights Era impacted the realm of sports in a great and powerful way. Throughout the mid 1900s, many minority athletes emerged through all odds and began to integrate themselves in the white dominated athletic business. These athletes endured constant hardships in order to achieve their goals and dreams; facing much racism, segregation, and violence. Minorities across the country began to look up to these sportsmen and realized that anybody could attain greatness despite the social troubles of the time. Stories depicting the struggles of minority athletes soon arose and grew popular among different cultures. These true accounts passed from generation to generation, each admiring the courage and bravery of athletes and how important they became in obtaining an equal society. Producers and directors soon found a way to revolutionize the film industry by retelling the racial discrimination that minority athletes faced. Remember the Titans, The Perfect Game, 42, and The Express are all examples of how minority athletes overcame racial adversities in order to obtain the championship. These Hollywood movies contain many inaccuracies that draw away from the true impact minority athletes had during the Civil Right Era. Although these films do depict the racial components of the time, they do not depict the accurate occurrences of the stories they try to recreate.
There is a scene in this movie where the coach takes the team on a long run in the middle of the night. They end up at the break of dawn at a cemetery. The coach tells the young men of the battle that was fought on that ground. He told of the blood shed on those grounds that turned the whole area red. This can help many people that want to make a difference in this world.
Remember the Titans is a film from 2000 displaying a true story of a racially divided football team from the 1970s. The movie highlights the relationships of the black and white people, and how they learned to interact with each other in a time when this was not the way of life. It brings up a number of questions throughout, of what is right and what is wrong, and really challenges the characters, making it a very interesting movie to watch. I have seen this movie many times, and each time I feel like I get something new out of it. It is a movie that can be used as a teaching tool, it does a great job of interpreting not only what was happening in the United States of America at that time, but social psychology concepts through real life situations.
Racism is a common and ancient social problem in the U.S.. African Americans spend many years on solving the problem. From the Emancipation Proclamation to the Civil Rights Movements, they consistently fought against racism and gradually gained the justice and rights. During that time, many famous people were born, such as Martin Luther King. Because of their efforts, nowadays, even the president of the US, Barack Obama, has African American blood. However, racism becomes a headline in the news again recently. In the past few months, protests have happened in many big cities like New York and Washington. African Americans went on the street protesting against the discipline of the police department. They claimed that they
Police brutality and racism are an ongoing problem in our country. It goes back hundreds of years with no sign of it stopping. Police officers have been abusing their power since they have been around. Abuse against African American males by white police officers is getting out of hand. Most officers face no punishment at, and all there is a special code that they follow. Officers follow The “Blue Code of Silence”, which is a code that means they look out for one another. Even with video recording devices, the news, and social media, these events still go on. African Americans take most of the abuse and it looks like there is no end to this. This is a reflection on our society, and it makes us look ignorant to what is going on around us.
Officers are trained and taught different polices that require them not to be biased towards any gender or race. Such officers include Sunil Dutta, if you don’t want to get shot, tasted pepper-sprayed, struck with a baton or thrown to the ground, just do what I tell you.” (Dutta) uses policies to their advantage. Lack of African-American officers, mainly in communities with citizens of color, can lead to an inquiry that there is a bias in law enforcement agencies and their policies. With recent events in the news displaying the misconduct of officers in an African-American communities like, in July of 2014, where the death of Eric Garner because of “chokehold” by a police officer hit home for many African-Americans and made them question the legislative decisions on policies causing a distrust and lack of confidence within the police departments, shying away citizens from
Gerry & Julius break up the fight at school. Although they don’t always get along, they put aside their race, showing true leadership. The boys additionally call a meeting in the gym, they bring everyone together which is a big task. When they put their mind to it, they achieve great things. Gerry and Julius grow to be great friends as Gerry tells Alice, “Don’t you see the family resemblance? That’s my brother.” Gerry realises “[He] was only hating his brother.” Julius and Gerry grow as people drastically, their positive attitude and how far they have come show their true
The movement BlackLivesMatter have outed hundreds unlawful officers and victims that never got the justice needed. The same characteristics (color and style) that emulates strong, noble people can backfire. Black people in this country who actively resist dehumanization makes a call to action and a response to anti-Black racism in our current society. (Cullors, 2015) The growth of the movement has moved country-wide, first starting in the south; the south had always had history of racism and anti-black impulses. This movement is continuing to carry up north and west, and is projected that any officer can be the next one to unlawfully kill another black individual. These immoral police officers are no different from the rest of the police force, their uniforms are no different color or style they do not have different titles, there is no distinction between the these two types of officers. African Americans are persuaded to be more cautious and angry towards police officers; anyone with a cop uniform can be considered a threat to their life. Innocent cops were murdered in retaliation to the unfair judicial systems that are not punishing these cops. Once a police-like uniform is worn it not only once symbolizes honor and power, but t too many communities
