The film Remember the Titans is directed by Boaz Yakin. The film is based on a true story of an American high school football team. Throughout the film there are racial differences which divide the community. I will be looking at how one of the main characters Gerry Bertier changes throughout the film and how he deals with racial differences and his leadership skills change. Gerry doesn’t want anything to do with black football players. Gerry doesn’t want to join together with the black school to make one team. But Gerry had no choice the schools combined making T.C Williams’s high school. With the addition of black people Gerry believes that they will take over the football team and none of the white people will be able to play. Gerry is one of the best players in the football team and he leads by example when it comes to being on the field. When he comes off the field he leads all the players to help them and to make the team better. At camp when the team goes for a run to the battle of Gettysburg you can see from a low angle face shot that the talk that Coach Boone had just given them had meant something to Gerry. From that moment on he tries to help out everyone he can. After this happened when they were back training, Julius (who is looked to as a leader of the black players.) and Gerry came together on the football field making some good defensive plays. The good plays led to Gerry and Julius coming together after one play and yelling in each other face “LEFT SIDE” “STRONG SIDE”. From that moment on they united together to become really good friends. Since Gerry and Julius were looked to as leaders all of the other team mates looked up to them which lead to the team coming together at camp at getting rid of the racial differences within the team, bonding together as one.
