Religion: Lecture Analysis

Lecture one was quite interesting, because I got to learn knew things but it also made me think deeply about different aspect about religions. For example what is religion, what causes the negative acts on the behalf of religion, and much more. Prior to homework one, I thought religion was only based on faith, but that has changed. There are many different reasons for believing in a religion, but the effects of it don’t really change. People follow religions, and we are all the same.

One of the most interesting part that I read in lecture one was about what is the meaning of religion. The lecture notes go talks about many different things that religion means to people, but what caught my eye was the religion being a security system for people. …show more content…

There have been many acts of evil committed in the name of religion, but why was evil committed if evil is in not prohibited specifically for Christianity and Islam? If people commit evil acts in the name of religion, does that make the religion evil? I believe that the cause of negative is not from the religion itself but rather from the bad apples who follow the religion. The majority of religions that I have knowledge of don’t prohibit negativity, so I could only assume that the negative of those religions derived only from people who misconstrue the religion for their own benefits.

Lecture one gave me better insight on the history of religion and why people believe in religion. One of the things I constantly think about is why do people believe in religion. Is it because the people are them follow a certain religion so they feel its necessary for themselves to be doing the same, or it maybe because they are afraid of death. “Forms of organization, and the way they relate to the broader social context, are also part of religion, the sociological expression of religion” (MPMF, p. 10). When most of us think of religion we tend to think of the churches and temples, etc. that we know of. There is a whole side to religion that is about how it is organized. Some groups are democratic in their nature while other groups have more of an authority structure. We will be looking at these sociological structures throughout the course. Again, we break down these three forms to better study the material, but in fact they are interconnected. “In any religion, the three forms of expression work together to form a unified experience… They unite to form a single, almost indefinable experience, which points to the ultimate nature of the sacred and becomes a part of the inner life of each person touched by it” (MPMF, p. 11).
