Religion and Spirituality in the Workplace
Religion in the workplace has been a controversial topic as well as a difficult issue that employers and employees must face. Religion remains to be a significant issue as organizations continue to become more diverse. Within the cultures and organizations throughout the world there are many different beliefs, practices and morals. There are laws however in place to protect religion as a freedom of expression. The laws protect individuals from discrimination based on religion, ethnic background, culture and practices, at the same time protecting organizations from potentially being sued for not providing accommodations to those who practice their beliefs. The argument surrounding religion in the workplace is whether or not religion is beneficial and should it be allowed to be practiced. This essay will attempt to show through the utilitarian and deontology theories and the relativism perspective, how religion is viewed by society and organizations within the workplace.

Scholars have been trying to come up with a well-founded, acceptable and universal definition of religion for years; however, none of these definitions so far are a perfect fit for all religions of the world. There are many things in our life that are well defined and well understood but, unfortunately, religion is not one of them. There is no common ground and understanding of what religion really means. Religion is what we make of it, so no one can truly define religion in a way that is meaningful across all borders as it is outside of the realm of reason and rationale and the definitions we give could be either too exclusive or inclusive.
The religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are alike in many ways but they also share many differences. Judaism and Christianity use the bible in their holy scriptures, while Islam does not. Religion plays an enormous role in the history of mankind. Wars have been fought over it, lives have been surrounded by it, and it has directly or indirectly shaped the lives of many individuals. Culture and religion play a large role in developing each other. People’s religion is decided by their culture. When it comes to religious beliefs, people have opinions that can be very conservative, to people who have extremist opinions. It is nearly impossible to say whose opinions are correct, but one thing that can be found in their opinions is a middle ground. From religion to religion, people tend to have some degree of similarities in their beliefs or practices. I saw something parallel to this during my interviews. I interviewed four very different people, from different generations, and different religions, yet I found similarities within many of their answers.
Defining religion is something very personal. We characterize it with words that we feel resonate with our own beliefs. It is hard to give an unbiased definition of religion.
