Within Carrie there are a lot of visible themes that leave a lot to think about after watching the film. The first and most obvious to me, was religion. Religion was something that was hidden everywhere in Carrie, from her overbearing mother Margaret to her classmates that try to push her to the brink of insanity. This leads into the second theme that might even be considered the main theme, which is bullying and mob mentality. During the film, Carrie is noticeably different than everyone else, with such examples as not realizing what her period was and making her own dress for prom. Since she is considered “different” for the time it brings a lot of negative attention to her and is the main source of her problems. The next and less obvious …show more content…
Telekinesis is a supernatural ability that no one has really been able to do, but it involves the ability to manipulate and move objects with your mind through your own willpower and intellect. This is the kind of movie you watch to not bring a moral or meaning out of, but instead it gives you something to think about on your own and reconsider what some of your actions can lead to for the future. Following the theme of religion, the main focus within religion that is mentioned through the film was sin. Her mother was so obsessed with sin and religion that she let it consume her life, to the point that not only was it everything she lived about but also was making it everything that Carrie could live for as well. She believed most everything was a sin, and hated herself for having sex and actually liking it. Towards the end once she saw Carrie come home in blood and after she had some time to think about Carries previous actions against her mother she stated “I should have given you to god when you were born” and “I wish I had killed myself when he stuck it in”. She then proceeds to try to kill Carrie to “save” her from a life of sin and regret. On the other end of the spectrum you have those who do not care about sinning and
A few of the many themes in witness are love, hate, and sacrifice. The Theme of love is present in many aspects of the story. The theme of love is present in almost every character of this story, a few examples would be Viola and Harvey Pettibone fight throughout almost the whole book, but at the end harvey starts to realize the Klan is making him lose his
These three major themes which were appearance vs reality, the importance of free thought, and man vs. society were revealed throughout the book in many different scenes, and through many different characters. These major themes gave us a better understanding of the book and the characters of the book, and what some of them wanted to achieve.
While planning the trip, she uses plenty excuses in order to go to Tennessee to visit her friends. She complains that kids have already been to Florida and needs to "be broad". She used The Misfit as her last resort to go to Tennessee. When leaving to go on the road, she sneaks her cat Pitty Sing, fearing "she may miss him too much". She could have her cat with someone. After The Misfit starts killing the family, she proceeds to beg for him to spare her life. This show that she is willing to live alone as long as she 's spared. She tells him "You 've got good blood". All her begging proved futile as she was shot. To me, her ultimate point was when said she would have Mr. Teagarden. Mr. Teagarden died wealthy from buying a Coca-Cola stock when the business started. The way she said that it seems as if she wanted to marry him because he had money rather loving him for being a gentleman.
she must learn how to overcome. She goes from being this person who doesn’t fit in at
In conclusion, there are various themes in the book. The theme of education is evident from the beginning to the end of the novel. Atticus Finch stresses the need for education to his children and also to the people of Maycomb during the trial of Tom Robinson. The theme of courage is also an important part of this novel. The children learn from Atticus and Mrs. Dubose that courage and strength are not necessarily physical, but actually they are present in the hearts and minds of people. The theme of prejudice is present throughout the novel in the first part against Boo Radley and in the second part in the form of racism against Tom Robinson. The understanding of prejudice helps the children change from childhood innocence to a point of maturity and acceptance of people who are different from them.

In Inherit the Wind, a 1960s film adaptation directed by Stanley Kramer, the battle between religion and science was tested, portrayed through the Scopes Trial of 1925. In the trail, John Scopes, a high school science teacher, was accused and convicted of teaching Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, curriculum that was forbidden by Tennessee state law. It is clear that a focal point of the film was the discussion of whether religion should be the driving force behind education, or if science and empirical study is a better alternative. This discussion is alive and well in 2017, crucial in a time where Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, is a known believer in theories of ‘intelligent design,’ a theory that suggests divine guidance in the
Religion is a pervasive theme in most of the literary works of the late Georgia writer Flannery O'Connor. Four of her short stories in particular deal with the relationship between Christianity and society in the Southern Bible Belt: "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," "The River," "Good Country People," and "Revelation." Louis D. Rubin, Jr. believes that the mixture of "the primitive fundamentalism of her region, [and] the Roman Catholicism of her faith . . ." makes her religious fiction both well-refined and entertaining (70-71). O'Connor's stories give a grotesque and often stark vision of the clash between traditional Southern Christian values and the ever-changing social scene of the twentieth century. Three of the main religious ingredients that lend to this effect are the presence of divine meanings, revelations of God, and the struggle between the powers of Satan and God.
She knows that she is going to die. She reaches out to The Misfit and tells him “Why you’re one of my babies. You’re one of my own children!”. She doesn’t literally mean that he is her child but that they are both human, both children of God. The Misfit, being completely amoral and totally cut off from his own humanity, recoils from her touch.”The Misfit sprang back as if a snake had bitten him and shot her three times through the chest.” At this moment of her death, the Grandmother is more genuine than she’s ever been in her life. At the very end of her life she achieved a state of grace. The Misfit too, also undergoes a transformation. He realizes there’s “no real pleasure” in the way he’s been living his life. That’s not to say that The Misfit would stop killing. Only that, like the Grandmother, he realized a truth about

Toni Morrison’s novel, Beloved, explores the physical, emotional, and spiritual suffering that was brought on by slavery. Several critical works recognize that Morrison incorporates aspects of traditional African religions and to Christianity to depict the anguish slavery placed not only on her characters, but other enslaved African Americans. This review of literature will explore three different scholarly articles that exemplifies how Morrison successfully uses African religions and Christianity to depict the story of how slavery affected the characters’ lives in the novel, even after their emancipation from slavery.
What is not mentioned in the vignette is Tonya’s religion. African-Americans tend to be committed to their spirituality and the church serves as an extended family (Stevens & Smith, 2013). Studies have shown that spirituality can counteract the negative effects of cultural stereotypes and trauma as well as provide to favorable mental health outcomes among African American females (Blakey, 2016). Religion can provide the client with the ability to find hope and self-efficacy. Blakey (2016) study concluded that women had found that trauma and substance abuse had routed them away from church and their spirituality, but with sobriety and regaining their relationship with a higher power helped bring the women back to a life they had left behind.
Everybody that is human has certain faith or believes in Gods, Jesus Christ, or Buddha but, whatever that faith is comes from an extension of what the foundation is called religion. The Conjuring series, which was written and directed by James Wan, was a recent breakthrough in popular horror films by topping the charts and making horror film history. Horror films in recent Hollywood time seem to be failing horror fans more than ever, they are believed to be “poorly produced genre pictures and they also fail to inspire any fear within the member of the audience.” (Edward-vkanty). Even though there are a countless amount of people who love the recent Conjuring movies, there are also a vast amount of people who are not fans, these people believe that The Conjuring films are too much like other recent horror films and seem just as cheesy with over-the-top music. Although people may disagree, the movie sequel is said to “bring
