It is amazing how much Biology has in common with the social world when it comes to the relationships among human-beings. Symbiosis is the interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association with each other and they include mutualistic, parasitic, and commensal relationships. In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men and the movie The Mighty, the key relationships of symbiosis are executed in many of the characters’ interesting adventures throughout both of them. The characters relationships in the book and the movie can be traced back to symbiosis in a way that shows how the mind works when people create relationships. The novel Of Mice and Men and the movie The Mighty show symbiotic relationships that are visible to the eye.
The relationships between the characters in The Mighty are associated with symbiosis. The first type of relationship relating to symbiosis is mutualism, which is defined as the doctrine that mutual dependence is necessary for social well-being. In The Mighty, Kevin Dillon and Maxwell Kane share a mutualistic relationship. Their mental and physical limitations and advantages are opposite of one another, so they are able to help each other in a way that is benefitting for the both of them. An example of mutualism is shown when Kevin says to Max “’Think of it as a partnership. You need a brain and I need legs. And the Wizard of Oz doesn’t live in South Cincinnati’”. Max is a large bodied boy who suffers from Dyslexia and is labeled as a dinosaur and the dumbest kid in his seventh grade class. Kevin is the polar opposite, where he is very small for his age but is very bright and intelligent, though he suffers from Morquio Syndrome, which makes it difficult for him to maneuver without the...

... and Men presents examples of symbiosis.
The associations between certain characters in the novel Of Mice and Men and the movie The Mighty represent the three branches of symbiosis. Kevin and Max from The Mighty showed how mutualism can be interpreted into a relationship by helping one another succeed in their struggles that were difficult to accomplish before they had met each other. In the book Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie show how parasitism can take over and rule George’s life because Lennie cannot take care of himself and Crooks, Candy, and Lennie show how commensalism through company and conversation does not affect Crooks, but gives benefits to Candy and Lennie since they are able to discuss new ideas with a new person. Symbiotic relationships in the views of a human-being will have a lasting effect on the friendships people make in the future to come.
One of the most memorable friendships of the early 2000s is portrayed in the movie Napoleon Dynamite. When the two main characters Napoleon and Pedro meet, they become fast friends. Napoleon and Pedro stay loyal to each other throughout the entire movie, despite what others might think. This is similar to how John Steinbeck portrays friendship in his novella Of Mice and Men. The friendship between the main characters of the novella, George and Lennie, is unexpected. They choose to stand by each other regardless of society’s expectations. Through this, Steinbeck communicates the theme that a loyal friend can be a haven in a heartless world.
To begin with, according to Lucius Annaeus Seneca, “One of the most beautiful qualities of true friendship is to understand and to be understood”. Even this quote explains that true friendship is when an individual stands for another individual. In the novel Of Mice and Men, author John Steinbeck examine the idea of friendship between two migrant ranch worker even when there was difficulties. Through the character of Slim and George, author Steinbeck illustrates friendship and reveals that friendships stand up for each other even when is difficult time.
Two characters to be analyzed in terms of their male relationships are George and Lennie. An article describes the friendship between men, and how most of the time it is more than just a normal friendship. The author states, “The heroic friendship was a friendship between two men that was intense on an emotional and intellectual level” (McKay). Guys have a stronger relationship than just being able to hang out and have fun. They have a bond that they are emotionally involved in, meaning they really love each other but not in anything more than friends. They also are connected on an intellectual level, which means they know everything about each other and they are able to open up whenever they need a friend. There are a lot of scenes from Of Mice and Men that show George and Lennie’s friendship. One scene is when George is telling Lennie how most people are alone trying to get through life, but they are different. They have each other. George says, “ If them other guys gets in jail they can rot for all anybody gives a damn. But not us! An' why? Because… because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why. He laughed delightedly” (Steinbeck 40). This quote from Of Mice and Men shows that George and Lennie connect on an emotional and intellectual level. They both know that they have each others back for no matter what they go through
Finally, mutualistic relationships are often shown in literature; specifically in, Tuesdays with Morrie, The Mighty, and Of Mice and Men. In Tuesdays with Morrie, Mitch and Morrie help each other by giving affection and sense of purpose. In The Mighty, Max and Kevin are mutual because they accompany each other, and they are mentally or physically strengthened. In Of Mice and Men, Lennie and George are companions and they protect each other. All these stories have one thing in common, mutualism, and just like the hermit crab and the sea anemone, the goby fish and the shrimp, humans and plants, these characters needed each other to be fulfilled.
There are many people that believe that working together can build a strong friendship. Kevin and Max go back to school. There, Max is mistaken for a giant, unintelligent, young boy until Freak says that Max knows the answers. Just that he is too shy to say them in front of the class. So, the teacher had him write down the answers to the problems and show them to her after class. She sees that Max is just as smart as everyone else, so then she lets Max move
It is normal for two organisms in nature to have a symbiotic relationship in which both rely on each another in order to mutually benefit. However, sometimes one organism becomes greedy and decides to unfairly take more instead of equally sharing with their symbiotic partner. By doing so the relationship becomes parasitic. Toni Morrison's Sula, focuses on this exact transformation in the friendship between Sula Peace and Nel Wright from their close childhood to their diverging paths as adults in their hometown Medallion.
Relationships can be a positive aspect in a person 's life. There are many significant attributes about relationships in the movie Rain Man by Ronald Bass that are comparable to the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Both of these stories are good examples of how relationships teach people how to be supportive and accepting. These stories also teach us about how spending time with a person brings you closer together and how over time the characters in the two stories learn the true value of friendship. It is apparent through both of these stories that a considerable part of most relationships are made up of support for one another.
A coon dog and a tick, an oak tree with moss on the north side, a termite and its internal bacteria, and a shark with tiny fish that eat the extra meat chunks in between the teeth all have one thing in common: symbiosis. Defined as the interdependence of organisms, symbiosis is the basis of the relationship between George and Lennie in “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck. One type of symbiosis helps both parties while another type involves one organism being hurt by the exchange. The dog is hurt by the tick while the termites and the bacteria benefit from each other’s presence. These types of symbiosis can occur in humans and are evident in “Of Mice and Men.” Both types of symbiosis exist between George and Lennie in the novel.
Obviously one example being Lennie and George, having such a close relationship but not even being related to each other. A critical thing to remember is how throughout the story “Of Mice and Men” George is always looking out for Lennie, knowing the ways of how Lennie always gets into trouble. This being undeterred by Lennie being killed by George, but for very generous reasons, one being Lennie may would have ended up dead or in jail, either way ending in a tragic circumstance. George knowing Lennie he could never survive in jail by himself, George decided to kill Lennie so he would not suffer for selfless reasons. As stated before “To a Mouse” has a theme of friendship, how both being immortal to each other but sharing the same struggles. Taking everything in mind we can see how even in two different friendships between distinct people, they can both approach the same theme in different
When asked about John Steinbeck’s career, people often refer to Steinbeck as a playwright, journalist, and a well-known novelist. The book Of Mice and Men is a popular novel by John Steinbeck and a required read for most high school students. Most of Steinbeck 's novels have a central theme focusing on the relationship between man and his environment. The American dream for George and Lennie, two of the main characters in Of Mice and Men, is to have a place of their own, to be respected, and to work hard for everything they earn and deserve. In Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, the land and a hope of a better life becomes the talisman of an American dream for Lennie and George that is left unfulfilled.
the nonspecific or universal role of relationships been analyzed in the context of the larger novel.
Symbiosis is a relationship in which two organisms, interact with one another and give each other an advantage. An example of symbiosis would be between a clownfish and a sea anemone, in which the sea anemone provides a safe home for the clownfish and the clownfish lure prey into the sea anemone. Therefore, a symbiotic relationship can be compared to an effective community, in which the community helps one another. One method of aiding each other inside a community would be empathy, known as the ability to understand or share feelings of another individual. In How To Kill A Mockingbird, empathy has been a theme revolving around the book in Part I. Empathy can solve problems that others suffer from. The author is showing in Part I that empathy is the solution to racism and prejudice.
Conflict, by definition, is a back and forth struggle between two opposing forces. In the literary work, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, it is clear, the protagonist, George Milton, undergoes many conflicts that lead to the novel’s overall purpose. Steinbeck weaves together George’s conflicts with others, himself, and with society to illustrate what the true meaning of friendship is.
Friendship is a bond that brings society together as a whole. The article, “Friendship in an Age of Economics” by Todd May describes six friendships that pertains to life. In the Of Mice and Men excerpt, the reader meets two characters, George and Lennie, and their friendship is shown. Of the six friendships, in “Friendship in an Age of Economics,” the true friendship, developed by Aristotle, is used in Of Mice and Men through George and Lennie’s relationship because of how they act towards each other, and how they take care of one another through many different ways.
The movie being analyzed is the Sandlot. The relationship between the two main characters is a friendship, which begins with one boy who is desperate for friends and another who is searching for The Sandlot’s last teammate. The friendship between Benny and Small’s is an accurate depiction of the development of friendship in real life. In the movie, Scotty Smalls (Smalls) moves to a new neighborhood. One of his new neighbors happens to be the best baseball player in the neighborhood, Benny, who eventually teaches Smalls how to catch and throw so that the team has a ninth player. What begins as filling a baseball position eventually leads to a strong bond between the two main characters. Throughout the summer, the team plays baseball, goes swimming, plays baseball, goes to the fair, and plays baseball. A dog known as “The Beast” lives behind the fence of The Sandlot. The Beast is said to have eaten every baseball and person that has ever been on the other side of that fence, so when the boys hit Small’s stepfather’s signed baseball over the fence, they have to come together to retrieve the baseball. In the movie The Sandlot, directed by David M. Evans, the development of the friendship between Scott Smalls and Benjamin Franklin Rodriguez is conveyed through their communication. The Sandlot shows the progression of a friendship and the importance of communication to help a friendship flourish.
