When two people disagree, or when their thoughts and behaviors are different, they have conflict. Conflict can be good and it can be bad. It is good when conflict motivates people to think, grow or do things another way. In healthy relationships, there is no fear when conflicts happen. For those raised in violent homes where a person is out to “win,” rather than resolve their differences through talking and compromise, the conflict can move from a disagreement to abuse or violence. In that case, counseling can be of help (“Domestic Conflict”). Oscar Pistorius is a very famous blade runner in South Africa who murdered his girlfriend in the early morning of Valentines Day. The famous blade runner pleaded not guilty for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, claiming that he mistaken her with an intruder and it was not a premeditated murder (Curnow). Oscar Pistorius story is similar to the story “ A Jury of Her Peers ” because Minnie Wright is also accused of murdering her husband while he was asleep. Minnie Wright just like Oscar denied the murder of her husband. Even though they used an entirely different approach, both Minnie Wright, in Susan Glaspell’s “A Jury of Her Peers” and Oscar Pistorius, the South African sprint blade runner, were both in a domestic conflict and committed a crime by murdering their partners.
Both Minnie Wright and Oscar Pistorius never got help for their issues. Minnie Wright was being abuse physically and verbally by her husband John Wright. The whole town where Minnie lived knew that she was very unhappy and having trouble with her husband, but no one gave her the proper help she needed; she was all in it alone. Oscar Pistorius is currently still in trial and haven’t been convicted yet, but will likely be a free man in a couple months.
As a final point, Oscar Pistorius the blade runner who shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and Minnie Wright the character in “A Jury of Her Peers” who strangled her husband John Wright to death are both similar in a lot of ways. Oscar and Minnie were both involved in a Domestic Conflict relationship with their partners and as a result of that they both are in trial and awaiting their conviction. Both stories have different approach but they both committed a crime that will follow them for the rest of their life.
