Relationships In Finding Forrester

In life, we meet different people, and sometimes, they become friends. Relationships are part of everyone’s life, good or bad there is always a story that comes with a relationship. Like every good book, there are chapters and plot twists which reaches the climax then comes to the resolution just like a relationship. In Finding Forrester, the bond between Forrester and Jamal grows throughout the movie just like the theme of wanting equality grows through the movie.

When Jamal first meets Forrester it’s because he wants some of his writing edited. It is Jamal that wanted this relationship, but secretly Forrester is also wanting this relationship too. Forrester gives lessons on how to write and even gives Jamal some of his work to help him

reference from his writing. This is the initial part of the relationship where Jamal is the student and Forrester is the teacher. Like at the beginning of the movie, many things were set for Jamal, like the school he went to and how in the family he was born in. There was no opportunity given to him to prove himself until Forrester came along.
The turning point in which Forrester and Jamal become equals is when Jamal takes out Forrester for his birthday. When they go out to the Yankees stadium and reminds Forrester of his childhood; this scene shows Forrester finally trusting Jamal and becoming friends with him. It shows Forrester reveal himself to someone after 50 years of being alone due to losing all his family.
Throughout this movie there is a common theme of a need for equality. Like, an obvious one is the racial equality, but the main one shown is the bond between Jamal and Forrester where Jamal is the one trying to be friends with Forrester not a student and a teacher relationship. I believe this movie tries to portray the struggles of inequality in real life and shows the audience how the characters’ struggle through it. Finding Forrester brought to life, through the relationships made, how friends will look out for each other just as Forrester and Jamal did when Jamal kept Forrester’s secret, and Forrester claimed it was alright for Jamal to use his words.
The relationship throughout this movie is essential to the meaning behind the main theme of equality. The bond that Forrester and Jamal have helped to show equality that Jamal attains throughout the movie. This movie, written by Mike Rich, demonstrates the desire for people to be seen as equals by getting to know unexpected people.
