Introduction Ill will be conducting a correlational study on whether there is a relationship between team sports and extroversion. My two variables are (1) Number of hours playing/being involved with a team sport/game. (2) The percentage of extroversion they are. I will be exploring what Extroversion is and its counterpart, introversion, and what that means in relation to approaching an activity such as a team sport. Then go on to explain how I carried out the study, and explain my results against my predictions. I will then conclude what the results mean, then go to explain further research that can be done in the future. Extroversion… what is it? A modern day explanation would be ‘A person concerned more with external reality than inner feelings’ (Harper Collins, (1991) The Free Dictionary, http://www.thefreedictionary.com/extrovert, 2013). This is the brief description of what being extroverted is about, they are less concerned with what they are feeling and thinking within their own head. They are said to speak without thinking, meaning they will say what is on their mind, without giving it some thought. Extroverts are also interpreted to be someone ‘who is energized by being around other people’ (About.com, (2013) About, http://video.about.com/giftedkids/What-Is-an-Extrovert-.htm#vdTrn, 2013). So extroverts by nature will enjoy social situations where they will be around other people a lot because they prefer that to being alone. Common misconceptions of what being an extrovert means are that they are loud, sociable and outgoing. This is not strictly true, these however can be some traits associated with extroversion. Personality has to be looked at particularly holistically, meaning taking in most factors that affect it. The problem with this is that it makes it extremely complicated to pinpoint a reason for the behaviour. What I have done is try to focus on very few factors, mainly looking at Eysenck’s theory and then bringing in Jung’s, but only touching on cattel’s trait theory. What further studies/research can be done? In terms of research that can be done in the future, something I thought of quite early in to starting my own research is that is there deference’s in males and females in terms of introversion and extroversion. Whether gender has a role to play in whether they will partake in team based activities. But that could bring in other factors that will affect the involvement in team sports.

There has been a link between media coverage and the indulgence of girls in sporting activities in schools. This is primarily because television and other media show sports as a preserve of men. As a result, there are few females in the sporting activities on media. Hence, female students never have role models to ape in sports. Boys find several sources of, motivation to participate in sports.
The main difference between introverts and extroverts is where they draw their energy from. Extroverts are generally considered as an expressive individual who seem to be energized by outgoing and social activities whereas introverts prefer the solitary pursuits -often embroiled in their own imagination- and may sometimes find the company of others draining. Introvert tend to recharge by reflection over ideas or by enjoying the solitude; they lose energy when they are near the crowd or large group of people.
Extraversion is marked by pronounced engagement with the external world. Extraverts enjoy eing with people, are full of energy, and often experience positive emotions. They tend to be enthusiastic, action-oriented, individuals who are likely to say "Yes!" or "Let's go!" to opportunities for excitement. There are many repercussions that are projected upon both men and women when they enter into a sport that typically isn’t thought of as gender appropriate. Some of those cultural and social stigmatisms may be abandonment by your peers, and friends questions regarding your sexuality, and even in some cases criticism as to how you are living your life. In some cases, it may lead to you not being accepted by either group, theone whose norems you are not following, of as well as the one with whom you are trying to get involved. This paper will address all of these issues and how these seemingly negative situations can, will, and are, leading to growth. It will also discuss how this is a situation where repercussions are not just in the sports arena, but is prevalent in everyday life, in areas far beyond that of sport.
In a recent study, 403 participants were first asked to answer a short questionnaire regarding their gender, age, and physical exercise habits. They then completed a questionnaire regarding perceived characteristics of a sport. In this latter questionnaire, the respondent was asked to rate to what degree the descriptor is characteristic of the sport or those practicing the sport using a seven-point scale from 1 (“Not at all characteristic of the sport/sport participant”) to 7 (“Very much characteristic of the sport/sport participant”). By now almost everyone has heard about child obesity in America, but just how high are the rates? The answer might surprise you. According to Nate Whitman, a writer for The Huffington Post, “rates of obesity have doubled in 2- to 5-year-olds, quadrupled in 6- to 11-year-olds, and tripled in 12- to 19-year-olds” (par. 2). This is due to more children staying inside and only doing activities such as video games. They do not interact with anyone besides whomever they are talking to online. These findings are astonishing to say the least. What can we do to combat this? Involvement in organized sports helps children develop their social skills, improve their academic progress, and stay active.
The type of sport adolescents choose to participate in can be considered masculine, feminine, or neutral which causes stereotypes among peers. Society has set the stereotypes for competitive sports based on gender. According to Alley & Hick (2005), “despite legal and social changes, sexist ideology still pervades sport” (p.273). Sports are seen as masculine, male dominated, and males receive higher media coverage and pay than the majority of female sports. The gender stereotype is learned through socialization and “for certain sports appear to be learned by grade school” (Alley & Hicks, 2005. p. 274). Gender role conflicts may appear in some athlete depending on the sport(s) one chooses to participate in, but this can alter by demonstrating acceptance for the opposite gender in sports. It is important to indentifying the social effects of sports participation in both genders and how beneficial it can be to the adolescent. Through sports participation adolescents learn those gender roles are based on self-perception, and not social interactions.
Extroverts are generally people who have the need to obtain gratification from what is outside the self. They tend to enjoy human interactions and tend to be enthusiastic, talkative, assertive, and sometimes they can be loud. Also, they tend to be energized and tend to thrive off of being around other people. Extroverts enjoy taking part in large gatherings, parties and business as they tend to be more energized to be around people and enjoy their company. However, when they are by themselves, they find less reward in the time they spent alone as they get have the tendency to feel bored.
Being an introvert should be seen as someone who simply finds pleasure, relaxation, calmness, satisfaction, and tranquility with being by him/herself, a person who feels that loneliness, on the most literal and non harmful level,
Intramural sports have been around for ages and may not be as well-known as varsity sports. However, the benefits that come along with them are very significant. In the article “The Social Benefits of Intramural Sports”, Wilson says, “Student participation in intramural sports programs serves to enhance the social element of development whether the participation is individual or in groups” (Wilson 72). This phrase is very relevant to my topic, but it only displays some the good that comes from the participation of intramural sports. Participating in a team sport can increase one’s self esteem. By being part of a team, you will give and receive praise. Receiving recognition from a team mate or a coach will boost your self esteem because you have been acknowledged for your efforts. As you are praised for your efforts, you will become more confident, thus improving your self esteem. Often times, the bond formed between team mates on the field translates into a friendship off the field. As team mates come to depend on each other and know that they are depended on, their level of commitment or responsibility to the game and skills needed for the game increases.
