Relationship between the Height and Weight of Students in Year 11 of Different Genders The aim of this coursework is to find if there is a relationship between the height and weight of students in year 11 of different genders, and to see if taller, or older, or students who watch too much T.V are generally heavier or lighter. I am doing this investigation because I have a brother in Year 10 who is fat, short, heavy and watches too much T.V and I am intrigued by this to see if all female students in year 11 are like that or whether they are heavier or lighter if they are shorter, or watch too much T.V. I will gather the required information from the Mayfield high school data book provided by the teacher. I could go on the internet and collect the data but it might not have been updated for some time so it might be out of date. I couldn’t have gone to the school office because they don’t have information of height and weight. I could do a survey, but the problem with this is that it is very time consuming and it is disruptive in the school If I wasn’t doing this investigation, I would probably have been doing something else for example to see if students who watch too much T.V have a higher I.Q, but due to the shortage of time and the way the school timetables are set out, I figured that I would not have the time needed in order to complete this task in the appropriate way. Some factors which may have caused me a problem if I did choose these hypothesis are, that firstly, some data in the booklet might be wrong or missing (e.g. someone might weigh 200k.g) and I wouldn’t know how much they really weigh. Also, by looking at the time allotted to me for completing the investigation I thought that the best investigation to do was to go for my second option which was to use the Mayfield data book to gather the information, my first option was to measure

In "thinking outside the idiot box", Dana Stevens responds to Steven Johnson's New York Times article in which Johnson believes that watching television makes you smarter. Indeed, Steven Johnson claimed that television shows have become more and more complex over the years in order to follow the viewers need for an interesting plot instead of an easy, linear story. However, Dana Stevens is opposed to this viewpoint. Stevens is not against television, he does not think it makes you smarter nor that it is poisenous for the brain, he simply states that the viewer should watch television intelligently. That is to say that, viewers should know how much television they should watch and what to watch as well.
However, the few that have been done seem to contradict each other tremendously. Some studies have proved that excessive television watching can lead to lower reading levels, while another study said television watching did not affect the way a person reads. This seems to say that either there is not a strong correlation, or maybe some people are more affected by television than others.... ... middle of paper ...

Despite in this book, Dr. Richard Lynn and Dr. Tatu Vanhanen had believed that the central thesis of this book is that the average IQ of a nation correlates with its GDP. This central thesis had been rejected or disregarded to to various reasons. The average IQ scores, between various nations differ and have been affected by both genetic and environmental factors. These factors are an inevitable throughout any psychological topic due to the common debate between nature versus nurture. Also, another flaw was that critical responses included critiques of the data and conclusions due to weak statistical evidence and precarious conclusions.

Television supports reading, which in turn to improves language ability. Good programming improves reading and can increase thinking. The Himmelweit confirms, “Television in the long run encourages children to read books; a conclusion that can be reinforced by evidence from libraries, book clubs, and publishing companies” (Postman 33). Dr. Hemmelweit stresses this point; “Book reading comes into its own, not despite television but because of it”(33).
Since the television made its big appearance in our society, there has been a lot of debate on whether it is good for us or not. Researches have come up with the conclusion that average person in the United States now watches over one hundred and fifty-one hours of television a month, which is well over 5 hours a day, and while there are many concerned people convinced that watching television has a negative impact on today's society. The question is “Do watching television make people smarter? You might well be surprised that watching television can actually make you smarter but that would be depending on the television show that the viewer spends their time watching.
