In the play, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, the plot develops through conflict, dialogue, and actions. Each character in the play has their own way of developing the plot, whether it be by having conflict, or doing something that affects everyone. Of all the characters, the two that affect the plot development the most are Walter and Mama, these two have the major conflicts and make the most impactful decisions. Mama is important due to the fact that she is going to receive $10,000, which is three years’ worth of an average family’s income back in the 1940’s – 1950’s. However, this amount of money causes the family to get into fights, and Mama ends up spending the money in a way to keep the family together.

Walter is a man who is very egotistical, believing that only he knows how to correctly spend and earn money, but this allows him to be the most impactful on the development of the plot. All the characters develop the plot in some way, but the two characters to be the most impactful to the plot are Walter and Mama. Walter is influential to the plot due to his frequent conflicts with other characters such as Mama, Ruth and even George, he drives everyone to try to move forward. Mama is important because she is the one who keeps the family together, and she is the one who is receiving a $10,000 check from her deceased husband. Without Mama and the $10,000 check, the characters do not really have a goal that causes them to fight, they would just be a normal family with not much chance of ever even seeing that much money in their lives.
