Revisiting the first assignment, I recall how frustrated I became in brainstorming ideas. How could I predict my performance for the semester without prior experience? This lead my standards and goals for the class to sound stagnant, mechanical, and monotonous. Writing the paper, I was no longer interested in predicting my semester but regurgitating the information found in the syllabus and course calendar.
Before entering this class, I dreaded writing. The effort and time needed to create a well written essay was laborious and tedious. I had too many ideas and I never prepared or planned for an assignment.
My goal for this semester was to follow the guidelines explained for each assignment, period. No further motivation nor desire to challenge
myself. This goal was insipid and uninspired. Thankfully, this class encouraged broader thinking. Freedom to explore creative and imaginative outlets enhanced my writing and held my interest. I was not confined to limit my words or write solely on a predetermined topic. The writing I submitted in this class were bold. I wanted to challenge myself in speaking about topics I would normally shy away from. Looking back, I could have spent more time developing the idea rather than revising. In my prose poem, I could have advanced the connection between the cigarettes and a broken home. The personal narrative could have benefited from a concluding paragraph on previous, unhealthy relationships, which made saying yes to a new one complicated. The abundance of ideas in the opinion piece struggled to find a central point. Despite these simple shortcomings, I’m proud of what I accomplished on paper. I never would have predicted that attendance would be the lowest part of my grade. I thoroughly enjoyed coming to class, speaking in a group and presenting ideas. This writing class was my only class of the semester with discussions and the freedom to interact with other students. The group activities and peer review coerced me to prepare for class and improved my writing immensely. Participation points and attending class are the two minimum requirements and easiest points available in almost every class, and I simply failed. Writing in Various Settings quickly became one of my favorite classes of the semester. It is the only class that I feel I continued to improve and put conscious effort into my assignments. Working in groups and the styles of writing we explored were challenging and engaging. Despite not actively participating and interacting more with my classmates and professor, I believe that I have honed my writing skills and found a new enjoyment in writing.
As a strong math, science and engineering student, writing has not come easy to me and by taking this class, I was hoping to become a stronger writer. Throughout the semester, organizing ideas in logical ways has become straight forward thanks to the peer discussions and review I have had. Before this class, I struggled to transition between ideas and discuss each idea in a logical sequence and, unfortunately, my language arts and history grades suffered as a result. Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
First thing I experienced walking into English 101 as a freshman was anxiety and nervousness. Going through high school I was never really good at English and having English 101 as my second class as a freshman was eye opening. I have learned to use proper technique while writing papers, looking through my paper for grammar errors and also that it is always good to ask for help when confused and if you are stuck on a paper.
As I began my journey through this course, I figured that I may encounter difficulties as writing, in general, is not one of my strengths. Over the past semester I have learned many things in my English class, educationally and through life lessons. Ms. Henry took the tedious, standard, subject of English and turned it into moral and intellectual lessons we can use in our daily lives. I latched onto the secret life of bees, serial, and the debate, out of the topics we went over this semester.
As I chose to take this class and better my writing skills at a college level, I knew this class was going to be difficult. With a total of four essays to write I knew I had to be on my game from the beginning. Throughout durations of this class, I have learned how to become more responsible, plan ahead of time, and how to become a better writer. With each mistake made i have been able to learn and improve. An Ad Analysis, Comparative Analysis, Narrative, and an Argumentative Essay are the four papers we had to write for the course.
Writing a decent essay can be nerve racking, time consuming, and can be accompanied by many trial and errors such as an art project. First you have to generate an idea, which can be the biggest challenge of them all. Then you have to decide on what details to incorporate and the placement for it. You begin to throw colors and shapes together in hopes that it will transform into a pleasing design. This all takes time, being challenged to create artwork, whether it be an essay or a painting, in sixty minutes becomes even more nerve racking and mind boggling. Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
Writing assignments over this course of time have gave knowledge and taught new processes for specific types of assignments. My attitude overall this semester has changed towards the writing process, as before I only use to pay attention to developing my three main ideas. Now I give attention to throws cited, grammar, structure and organization of the paragraphs. Essay’s overall presentation, problem solution and convincible factors lead to a good essay. This essay reflects level of difficulty or ease to produce essays, all the possible tasks and processes involved, and writing process of specific essay.
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. Over the period of time that I was in this course, I thought it would be a very simple and easy to finish class. But as time went on, I found myself to be demanded more of what I think, what I feel, what must be relied on my ability to understand the concepts and conventions of not only the essays, but of what goes on in the writers mind when writing.
