Reflective Self Analysis
When this year began, the sound of a writing class made my stomach cringe. In my first semester, I took writing comp one and was able to pass with a decent 85. I came out of that course with more strengths than weaknesses than I initially had. I was then startled when I was told that my career of writing in college wasn’t over. I had to enroll in writing comp two. I then prepared for the worse and became worried due to my feeble writing skills. Prior to the first day, I reviewed the syllabus to become more familiar with what I was about to dive into. I noticed that most of it was similar to last semesters criteria only more argumentative based. I went through the course and completed each essay. With each one came a new strength or weakness. As much as I wanted to be flawless, I was only able to try my best.

I like to think that the word “drug” alone is a hook when it comes to papers. In any example, it turns out to be very interesting. The beginning of this essay was just filled of pure information that would then set up the body.
Each paragraph in the body of the paper had its’ own kind of subject, and in each one was the same problem. Many times, sentences were unclear and not a good length. A simple comma and conjunction could’ve cleared most of it up. After reviewing the essay, this seemed to be the only flaw a long with the repetition of a single word here and there. When comparing this judgement to that of my professors, they reflected each other.
Strengths were all over the place. I was actually able to write a decent amount this time. My grammar use was the only thing that was a bit shaky. Other than that, things like punctuation and style were good compared to the similar essay in my prior semester (Muniz, “The Cause and Effect of Using Crystal Meth” Final). Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of writing that was required ended up helping me in so many ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me so much for college and real life.
When I was first accepted into the AP Language & Composition course, I felt overwhelmed. I had always received above average grades in all subject areas, but because this was an AP course I was unsure if my English skills were up to par. During the summer, my anxiety about the course increased. I began to feel that my writing skills were inferior to the skills of my peers’. Before this course, I did not have a developed writing voice or style. I had little knowledge of what phrases or words to avoid using in writing. I started to wonder if I truly belonged in an AP course. After having completed this course, I have a better grasp of the English language and have acquired skills that have improved my writing.
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
The strengths in my writing are my organizational skills, grammatical construct, and my work ethic. Organizing an essay is a very natural process for me. I always follow the basic guidelines for the structure of an essay, which state that one must have an introduction, thesis statement, body, conclusion, and a works cited when needed. The “Are Helicopter Parents Entering the No Fly Zone?” essay, “Animal Cloning—How Unethical Is It?” essay, and the “The Clean Water Act—Is it Successfully Reducing Water Pollution?” essay all have a proper introduction, an informative thesis statement, a body, great conclusions, and works cited pages. Formatting the essays is an integral aspect of organizational skills. Each new paragraph is indented, the font is twelve-point Times New Roman, the sentences are double spaced, and the headers are correct.
Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have been taken several college courses and nearly all of them require write of some form. However, before taking this class not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me. Throughout this course we had multiple assignments that were aimed to improve us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning.
I am always a little nervous and hesitant when I begin writing an essay. Ever since I was little I was an honor roll student, passed all my tests, was placed in honors and AP classes, and eventually graduated a year early from high school. I used to be so confident when I would begin writing a paper, I could finish it within a couple minutes. During junior year of high school, I began taking duel credit classes. I was passing all the classes so far until I reached English 111. It was an 8-week course and I started to get overwhelmed. All throughout the course I was having a little bit of trouble on the essays. I would still receive a passing grade, but it wasn’t an A. I began becoming a little discouraged and didn’t understand what was going
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
One strength I had was the organization of the essay. My sentences I wrote were not all over the place each paragraph talks about one topic. One weakness I had with writing this essay was my writing style. I noticed that in this essay my writing style was a bit choppy. I should have read my essay out loud to see if it had a good flow between my ideas.
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
The first four weeks of CR510 have prompted this student to reflect on her years of teaching in the public school setting. Having experienced many similar complexities to the ones in the text, this student is sympathetic to the challenges facing those in the education system and is eager to find opportunities to offer a better solution for all involved. CR510 has strengthened this student's belief that a third party neutral can provide valuable benefits to educational systems at all levels.
The class divided into groups of four and edited each other’s rough drafts. The activity was an eye-opening experience because their comments towards my essay assisted me while I created the final re-draft. Several of the comments were positive and pointed out that the structure, organization, and examples given were well done and thought out. This feedback gave me a sense of satisfaction with my essay. I was thankful that one of the reviewers pointed out that the thesis was missing at the end of the first paragraph. The thesis that I constructed was placed at the beginning of the first paragraph. I rearranged my sentences and added a proper introduction to correct the structure of the essay. The editing took a while, but I was pleased with the final outcome. Without the peer review process I would not have noticed this major mistake. With future essays, I will be turning to my classmates for advice because hearing feedback from other points of view is helpful. I will consider every comment that I receive, knowing that working on them will allow me to produce a higher quality of
Erik Erikson composed a theory of psychological development that was composed of eight stages. Erikson’s theory focuses on how personalities evolve throughout life as a result of the interaction between biologically based maturation and the demands of society. According to Erikson, “Each stage of human development presents its characteristic crises. Coping well with each crisis makes an individual better prepared to cope with the next.” (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2013, p. 314) According to Erikson’s eight stages of development, I have only been through six of the eight stages.
Reflective Evaluation The standardized patient experience was useful and interesting for me because I became more confident and active during nursing practice after that practice exam. It was also make me to remember 2012 and 2013 when I was working in the hospital in my country. After that practical activity, I knew how staff nurses should deal and communicate with patients who have different culture and language. Certainly, my specialization is nursing education, but I wanted to take more practical classes during the course or study.
I had a few other class options that would’ve also allowed me to take Comp, but I felt like this class would prepare me the most, not only for my upcoming classes, but for college as well. I’m also interested in producing a higher quality of writing. I have always enjoyed writing and would like for it to be in my future in some way; whether it be for my future career, or just a hobby. I’m not entirely sure what job I will eventually have, but it is entirely likely that I’ll need certain writing skills in order to excel at it. Regardless of how I use it, I know it will benefit me to learn more about how to improve the quality of my writing.
How has theatre helped me grow? I joined theatre to experience something new, to explore a new concept and grow as a person. I have learned to speak louder, memorize more, improvise a scene, and learn about the life and incredible works of William Shakespeare. Joining such an organized, wholesome organization is starting to feel like a good idea!
