The Digital Clinical experience was a positive experience for me due to the fact that it is somewhat like the simulation labs that we had during our Nursing program. I liked that it was a one-on-one experience as if we were actually there with the patient. I am a visual hands-on learner and simulation labs help me understand how to put things together better. However, I did find that I would ask specific questions, as I do in my every day nursing career, which Tina was unable to answer or understand. Tina would give random answers that didn’t pertain to what I was asking and there were no suggested questions to rephrase the question appropriately. It was intimidating and a bit scary, but instinctively I tried to help the patient and his family in any manner I could. As the day progressed, I had less anxiety when administering medications to the patient, and I felt more at ease with checking on the patient and his family to ensure they had no unmet needs. With technology moving so quickly within the medical and nursing fields, it is vital to embrace new and innovative ways to learn how to care for a patient. A nurse or nursing student is faced with the ever growing challenge of keeping up with new technologies. A fairly new way to gain education and build upon skills is with the use of simulated based learning. With the use of a simulated nursing environment, a student will be able to increase their level of understanding of new skills and technologies; this great resource has three major forms of real-life reproduction, can be used in many different areas of nursing, provides a means to evaluate a student’s understanding and demonstration of a skill, and eliminates the potential for harming a patient. With all education, the ultimate goal of mastering a specific trade or skill is the desired end result.
The transitioning nurse must be able to communicate clearly and effectively. Often times nurses working in the community are alone where there is no other health team member present, therefore complete communication is essential. Transitioning nursing must possess knowledge of computer technology. The use of computer technology allows the nurse to communicate with other healthcare providers, facilitate care and manage complex healthcare needs (Bates et al., 2016, p.342). Furthermore, nurses transitioning from an acute care setting must be able to adaptable to any given situation or community. For example, supplies and equipment found in a hospital setting can be different than the one found in a client’s home. A documentary Doctors ' Diaries produced real-life stories of seven first-year medical students from Harvard University. The film shows emotions and mental stress that goes through medical students while becoming a doctor and how it affects them. Medical students choose medicine or pre-med as a career to help save people, but the challenges interns interfere with are their personal life and education. At first, the interns were excited about their future and then over time they became tired and damage in certain ways; Tom Tarter was one of the interns that had to go through their medical education, internship, and family life at 21 years old.
Electronic medical records not only effect health care professionals, but the patients of those health care providers as well. However, nurses spend the most time directly using electronic medical records to access patient date and chart. Nurses now learn to chart, record data, and interact with other health care providers electronically. Many assume that electronic means efficient, and the stories of many nurses both agree, and disagree. Myra Davis-Alston, a nurse from Las Vegas, NV, says that she “[likes] the immediate access to patient progress notes from all care providers, and the ability to review cumulative lab values and radiology reports” (Eisenberg, 2010, p. 9). This form of record keeping provides health care professionals with convenient access to patient notes, vital signs, and test results from multiple providers comprised into one central location. They also have the ability to make patients more involved in their own care (Ross, 2009). Throughout my final ten weeks at my placement, I have grown and overcome so many obstacles. I have accomplished a wide range of skills since the beginning and have been improving on them as I gained experience. At my placement as a student nurse, I have gained a lot of confidence, skills, knowledge and experiences that have helped me act and work in a professional way. All the experiences I have had during the ten weeks of my student years have helped me in shaping me into a professional.
Although students were not allowed in the recovery unit, I was able to talk to one of the recovery nurses. I learned that a nurse’s duty of care includes monitoring the patient’s vital signs and level of consciousness, and maintaining airway patency. Assessing pain and the effectiveness of pain management is also necessary. Once patients are transferred to the surgical ward, the goal is to assist in the recovery process, as well as providing referral details and education on care required when the patient returns home (Hamlin, 2010).
I believe placing student nurses in the clinical setting is vital in becoming competent nurses. Every experience the student experiences during their placement has an educative nature therefore, it is important for the students to take some time to reflect on these experiences. A specific situation that stood out to me from my clinical experience was that; I didn’t realize I had ignored the patient’s pain until I was later asked by the nurse if the patient was in any pain.
Luckily, I am very comfortable with patients, which made providing care very easy. I was not afraid to go into other patient’s rooms if they rang for help. I would try my best to help the patients; however, if I needed help I was not afraid to ask a fellow student or nurse on the staff. It is very important to be able to talk to patients and work as a team with fellow coworkers as it made the job easier. On the other hand, I need to go over mother and baby assessments to become more familiar with both. I was able to complete the assessments; I now need to do so in a timelier manner while ensuring I do not forget any key areas. Lastly, it is vital that I continue to go over patient teaching prior to clinical. Being comfortable with the patients made the teaching easier, though I need to become more familiar with all the material that needs to be taught.
Another good learning experience was being able to navigate and document in the patient’s chart with the computer system Power Chart. It has helped me gather information about what areas need focused on when completing a comprehensive assessment on my patient. I got to read assessments of various healthcare providers. Also safety, as the computer prompt me during medication administration to help prevent any errors.
This reflective essay will discuss three skills that I have leant and developed during my placement. The three skills that I will be discussing in this essay are bed-bath, observing a corpse being prepared for mortuary and putting canulla and taking it out. These skills will be discussed in this essay using (Gibb’s, 1988) model. I have chosen to use Gibb’s model because I find this model easier to use and understand to guide me through my reflection process. Moreover, this model will be useful in breaking the new skills that I have developed into a way that I can understand. This model will also enable me to turn my experiences into knowledge that I can refer to in the future when facing same or similar situations. Gibbs model seems to be straightforward compared to the other model which is why I have also chosen it.
