Final Course Reflections
The purpose of this assignment is to reflect on the course from a learner’s perspective and write an autobiography regarding my experience. In this assignment, I will reflect on my perspective regarding scholarly language and terminology while discussing the successes and challenges synthesizing journal articles, the process for completing annotated bibliographies and performing journal critiques, and discuss and assess my critical thinking and writing skills. Additionally, I will discuss the concepts learned that will assist me in the future and my recommendations for the course that will assist doctoral students.
Scholarly language and terminology require thinking critically, comparing and contrasting information and ability to synthesize the information. This course developed my ability to read and think critically, compare and contrast information, and synthesize that information. This course has not been easy by any stretch of the imagination. Extensive time was spent researching topics, failing miserably at trying to synthesize the information fathered from researching the literature and improving incremental throughout the process. The lessons learned in this class will help me write much better papers in my other classes as I now understand how to think and write critically. Additionally, this class has instilled in me writing principles that I employ even at work as I now evaluate my emails for writing style, grammar, and tone before sending. At the end of this class and this reflection period of these papers. I realised that I have become a better writer than I have ever been before, because I was finally able to take and recognize my mistakes in my papers. During the course of the semester, all of the writing and research skills I developed helps to strengthen my self-confidence in many areas and it aids me in achieving my goals for the future. By developing more effective research approaches for finding and citing sources, I advanced from an inexperienced writer to a confident writer with the suitable knowledge to create effective essays to capture my audience. Having confidence in my abilities to use the skills I learned will help me to become a success in college. With more practice and valuation of my strengths and weaknesses, I can continue to improve and become an excellent communicator in the future.
Looking back over the course of the semester, I feel that I learned many new and interesting uses for technology within the classroom – both for classrooms that have a lot of technology and for classrooms that are limited with technology. For the majority of the class, we utilized William Kists’ book The Socially Networked Classroom: Teaching in the New Media Age (2010), which provided multiple modes of instruction that both utilized and/or created technology. One of the first things that I remember, and consequently that stuck with me through the course’s entirety, is that individuals must treat everything as a text. Even a garden is a text. The statement made me change the way that I traditionally viewed Language Arts both as a student and as a teacher, as I very narrowly saw literature and works of the like as texts only; however, by considering nearly anything as a text, one can analyze, study, and even expand his/her knowledge. Kist (2010) states that society is “experiencing a vast transformation of the way we “read” and “write,” and a broadening of the way we conceptualize “literacy” (p. 2). In order to begin to experience and learn with the modern classroom and technologically advanced students, individuals must begin to see new things as literature and analyze those things in a similar manner.
I am not the kind of person who talks or writes much. Putting my thoughts on papers is something I have always struggled with doing. I believe this class will help me improve on transferring my thoughts to paper, in an organized fashion. I look forward to becoming a better writer because of this class.
Throughout this term, my fellow classmates and I have had a chance to participate in a group project with two or three of our peers. The general topic was a vivid problem in a industry. Our class had a very wide and diverse sets of topics: from Styrofoam, to industrial hacking, to corruption in an influential international organization like FIFA, and so many more. Our group decided to develop a project named “Outsourcing and the price we pay for brands”. The name itselves is somewhat self-explanatory, however the problem is so much more complicated and interesting. In this paper, many struggles and concerns, of the group and of my my own, will be unfolded as I reflect the progress of this project.
