For me, writing is like my 13-year-old self. That was the age where I started to really familiarize myself with hobbies I enjoyed such as a painting, playing the guitar, and making videos. It is how I feel towards writing also; it is full of so many different styles and genres, all of which give an opportunity for the writer to be creative. Writing is different for every individual, but for me, writing is a creative and thought-provoking process.
Writing is like painting a picture with words. You are in full control of what you do, and how you do it. You start from point A and end with point B. Last year, I had to write a 2 ½ page essay within the given class time limit in AP History. Starting from point A, I felt like I took more time thinking than writing because of the pressure. Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. First of all, I didn’t know anything about essay writing. That class was my first experience in English writing. I wanted to drop the class so many times. Essay writing was just so stressful. I remember our instructor telling us that ESL 263 is an easy class compared to ESL 273. Of course that freaked me out. I started questioning myself if I really want to continue studying. Obviously, I kept studying. Nonetheless, I wanted to drop ESL 273 also. I’m glad I stayed in this class because I learned a lot and I can see improvements in my writing. Writing can be a powerful weapon you use to take you places you’ve never even dreamed. Writing can take you out of this world, and make yourself become the you you’ve always wanted to be. Writing can push you to strive for bigger and better dreams in life. It can help prepare you for your future. All you have to do is write.
Writing for me has always been a love and hate relationship since I could remember. Depending on the subject matter that I was writing about I would enjoy it because it suited my style or I loathed it because that specific style was uninteresting and boring to me. Learning certain writing formats were absolutely the worst part about writing when I first started learning in high school. As time pushed on and I grew older I began to develop an appreciation for writing that I did not have before; which is what led me to taking Writing 101 as my first full-fledged college course. I began this course with minimal writing experience because of what I failed to retain before, but now I am a stronger writer than I could have imagined with new skill sets that enhance my professional portfolio.
Writing an essay is not one of my strengths when it comes to learning English as my second language. I am not fond of writing an essay because I had minimal experience back in high school. Knowing that I have little experience when it comes to writing, I hesitated to sign up for English 211, but I ended up enrolling. In the small time that I am in the class, I had to write five different types of essays. I had to write two character analysis essays, a personal or academic challenge essay, an argumentative essay, and a reflective essay. Writing five different essays within few weeks was challenging. Writing to me is all about self motivation. No one can force me to write, I need to discipline myself to take the time to read and write. Throughout middle school and high school, I have learned how to compose a well written essay. I have also learned how negligence and procrastination will be detrimental to my final grades. As the first term of my freshman year is coming to an end, I now have time to reflect on what I have learned and what I have been reminded of in English 101. As I entered this college course, I have learned it is more about than how to formally write a sentence, but how to formally express an idea that is not only grammatically correct but also pleases the reader.
Writing to convey experience – reflecting on my student teaching at PS105. On the first day I walked into the building, I was thinking to myself, “was I really ready for this?” “I have never worked in a building so huge and I have never been in a school with over 1000 students.”
I really have never thought of myself as a writer. Currently, I see myself as an academic writer. I write what needs to be done for my classes, and that is about it. For as far back as I can remember, that has been an area I have struggled with. I was the student in elementary school, who needed extra help with literacy and writing.
Every good baker understands in order to make a mouthwatering cake a spectacular recipe is needed. The same proves to be true in writing an effective essay. Without experimentation, the right mixture of ingredients and baking time neither a successful cake nor essay can be produced. It takes practice and repetition before settling on the necessary tools required for a recipe. During my time spent in WRD 104 I gained the necessary ingredients needed to prepare my own formula for crafting a flawless composition. I have been toning old skills, while learning and developing new ones that can be added to my writing recipe. Despite some frustrations and challenges I feel as though I am leaving this class a stronger writer. Through the First Year Writing Program Learning Objectives I have developed and learned the effectiveness of skills such as writing multiple drafts, integrating mine as well as others views and the editing process. I understand I have yet to find the perfect recipe of writing, but due to my hard work and determination in bettering myself as writer through the skills I have acquired from the Learning Outcomes, I believe I baked myself a low “A” in WRD 104.
My senior project was creating blankets for the elderly at Bridgeview Estates. I made 10 total blankets, five for men and five for women, and took them into the nurses on Christmas Eve. Once the nurses had the blankets they decided who would be in most need of the blankets and gave them out on Christmas Day. In total, I spent 12 and a half hours creating the blankets, and another 10 hours and 45 minutes completing my job shadowing. My beginning date was on August 6th with a completion date of December 24th. The materials that I used were pieces of fleece blankets with scissors.
My experience with writing has varied over the years. My lack of interest in school plays a large role in how my writing has developed. From a young age, I have attempted writing in a journal many times, and have quit every time. Even my enjoyment in reading hasn’t sparked an interest in writing. As a result of being in school, I have learned that I just needed to get over it. Writing is interesting because it’s something that can be developed. Each year information is poured into our heads in order to produce a more successful outcome. I find that as I have gotten older I have developed an interest trying to make my writing better.
