What can I say about Writing? I was never really a fan of writing, in fact you could say it was least favorite subject. I guess I just never had that clicking feeling that so many writers get, no matter how much I practiced how many writing tutoring sessions I went to my essays would be “C” at best. I had a little thing called writers block and I had it bad, shoot I still get writers block now and then but while I was learning to write all I could do before I got a prompt was pray to god that the essay would be a free write that I could pick what I wanted to write about. My journey to becoming a somewhat decent writer all began in the eighth grade. It was the first day of school and everything was going pretty smooth It just felt like any other first day to me, most of the time the we are getting the syllabi from …show more content…
I had one more class to go and I was expecting the same thing. The bell rang releasing us from our sixth period to seventh period. “Another easy day I thought to myself, just getting the syllabus and then I’ll get time to talk to people in my class.” I arrived in my seventh period English class I walked inside sat down. The teacher was nowhere in sight. The class was full so I know I wasn’t in the wrong place. I sat in my chair fiddling my pencil for what seemed like forever. Five minutes passes then ten, then twenty then before I knew it and entire hour passed. It was only ten minutes left in class. I kept thinking to myself ‘where is the teacher at’. It’s our first day and we seriously didn’t get to meet him or get to chat. It was about eight minutes of class left and everyone was lined up at the door waiting for the bell to ring. All of sudden the teacher walked in the door, walked through the large crowd of students standing in the path of the door and sat at her desk. The teacher got up wrote her name on the whiteboard. Ms. Shelton, I said to myself she sat back down in her chair still not saying a
The first stop was Monica’s class room. We walked through the never ending hallway, searching for Monica’s classroom like detectives on a mission to find a key to the unknown door. We found the Monica’s classroom and dropped her off. The next stop was mine. I found myself getting more nervous each step, I toke. Suddenly my mom and my dad stopped walking and told me that this was my classroom.
Writing is a way in which a person can express their thoughts and ideas through the use of words. Everybody has their own writing styles. Some may consider theirs as inspirational while others think of it to be bad. Writing requires a lot of patience and time. In my case, writing has never been my favorite thing to do. I am no Shakespeare and I never will be, writing has always made me feel uncomfortable. In the past, I had always considered writing to be one of the most difficult tasks. I often wrote about topics that were not of my interest. I rarely did any writing out of school or for leisure as most people do. I only wrote because the teacher asked us to. Writing has always been forced onto me. Even though my writing isn't that great, I've felt that I've never been given the freedom to express my voice. Academic writing has always made me anxious. And, anxiety had resulted in my procrastination. Even though I consider writing to be one of the toughest tasks, I've felt that giving myself enough time to think allows me to do better. Silence helps me think beyond horizons. However, the fear of impressing someone, the anxiety and frustration is what makes me a developing writer.
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
“If writing didn 't require thinking then we 'd all be doing it.” (Jeremiah Laabs). Whether a person is aware of it or not, there is a process to writing that everyone goes through. I find it difficult to write essays from time to time, so I follow the writing process. The writing process is an approach to writing that involves pre-writing, drafting, and revising and editing. The writing process helps develop facts and ideas from reading about the topic to writing and editing essays.
At the beginning of the semester in Eng 121, I knew that there would be much to learn and many areas to improve. In high school I was not a strong writer, so taking Eng 121, in my first semester of college, was intimidating. Yet I quickly adjusted and was able to grow as a writer. My greatest accomplishment was understanding myself as a writer, because of this I quickly learned my weaknesses and strengths. After I learned my weaknesses I was able to prevent or go back and fix my mistakes, this allowed me to improve my writing immensely. Luckily, over the past few months I was able to learn the new 8th edition of MLA and identify my weaknesses, such as writing clear and concise sentences. The papers I chose to submit are ones of which I was able to prevent or correct mistakes I knew that I struggled with as a writer because of my Eng 121 class.
Multiple essays have been formulated during the duration of Composition 1. These essays have taught me an important lesson about my writing, failure is acceptable in order to grow. On the other hand, I made an important discovery last year that I want to study journalism and advance further in that field after college. From taking journalism classes, to blogging in my spare time, to always getting an A on my papers, I thought I had no room to improve. I was mistaken. Therefore, because of the rigorous essay work each essay brought, I learned more about how to write different pieces and grow from my “failure”.
The transition into college came as quite a shock. In both my history and writing class, we were quickly assigned papers, my old high school habits quickly returned and I procrastinated until the night before it was due. Hastily, I would write an average paper, look over it
this area but I’m going to improve on it. The process of using multiple drafts has
To be completely honest, this year has been nothing short of a disaster. Partially due to this class, which it is my fault for taking the class in the first place when I was obviously not qualified to take an AP Literature class. It started out fun, but became more and more stressful as the year went on. My mental capacity has reached its limit, and my physical health isn 't in the best condition either due to the late nights I have spent on homework. However, despite it all, I have learned a great deal from this class. Not only from the curriculum, but I have also learned some of my own limitations and realized some faults that I need to mend. This class tested my patience and my temper, which I had only discovered
Writing for me has always been a love and hate relationship since I could remember. Depending on the subject matter that I was writing about I would enjoy it because it suited my style or I loathed it because that specific style was uninteresting and boring to me. Learning certain writing formats were absolutely the worst part about writing when I first started learning in high school. As time pushed on and I grew older I began to develop an appreciation for writing that I did not have before; which is what led me to taking Writing 101 as my first full-fledged college course. I began this course with minimal writing experience because of what I failed to retain before, but now I am a stronger writer than I could have imagined with new skill sets that enhance my professional portfolio.
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. Now I understand the writing process and
I didn’t understand why I had to keep leaving. One morning, Mrs. Pedersen was called to the office for a phone call, and she asked me to read to the class while she was gone. I grabbed the book she had taken away from me the day before, only half read. It was a collection of Ukrainian stories, and I had been in the middle of “The Spiders’ Christmas Tree.” I would read that to the class, and thus find out how the story ended.
Suddenly the bell rang and I snapped my head up, realizing I had been day-dreaming through the latter part of the class. I scanned the board, not having the slightest understanding of the topics scrawled upon it. In a slight panic, I rushed to my
As I stated in my previous reflective essay, I hated writing in grade school. I sucked my teeth and groaned every time my teachers assigned an essay for homework. I don’t actually hate writing. I just disliked it because I never excelled in it. I wrote just to get the job done, but never took the time to pay attention to the writing process and the other aspects of writing. As I grew older and got a career, I realized how important writing was in the real world. From friends revising your status updates on Facebook that were plagued in grammatical errors or writing a professional email to your boss, writing skills are crucial to the real world.
He took us to our class. Our English teacher was already gone. He didn’t bother asking our English teacher about all this and said to us, “GO HOME AT ONCE AND NEVER COME BACK.”
