As we draw near the end of this term, I think back to where I was eight weeks ago. At the time I had not realized, but I had become a victim of modern technologies. My grammar and syntax had suffered greatly from the use of texting and IM’ing. Simply put, I didn’t pay attention to spelling, sentence structure, or punctuation. I did not think it was important in the least bit and writing anything that was more than a sentence long just didn’t interest me.

Nevertheless, I still have room for improvements and continue to learn from my mistakes. I need the most improvements in the area of sensory when writing Narrative Essays. In my first draft of my Narrative, I did well at telling my readers about the conflict I had with leaving my mom but it needed to be strengthened. Professor Lee instructed that I put my reader in the moment by answering questions like, What did the moment looked like? What people said? What it sounded like? With this being said, I attempted to do this in the final draft, however I fell short of providing enough sensory details. The subject of the Narrative is one that I have tended to keep to myself and have not talk about much. I stepped out of my comfort zone in an attempt to write a great Narrative. There were a few grammatical errors that I should have caught prior to submitting but that has taught me to be more careful with my editing and revision stages. Without reservation writing my Narrative Essay was by far my favorite writing assignment of the term. I struggled with the Persuasive Essay a little more than then Narrative, however I did better with the Persuasive Essay. For the Persuasive Essay, I struggled most with transitioning from one paragraph to the next. I also had a couple grammatical errors, however not as many as I have had in previous writings. Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
Comparing myself from the beginning of the semester to now, I may honestly say I have improved in my grammar usage and punctuations. A prime example of my punctuation problem was seen in my personal narrative essay, “Nevertheless, I was first born here in Honolulu, Hawaii in the pink hospital, but did not stay here long” (Personal Narrative Essay). Writing has always been my greatest weakness throughout my academic career. I love to talk and debate with other students. I also know writing will be important in any future career. Therefore, being able to translate my thoughts into writing efficiently has been a goal of mine. Thanks to WRC 1023, I have made great progress towards that goal. Because WRC 1023 teaches persuasive writing, I have focused on writing a strong thesis and using credible sources in my essays. But, I still have to improve on grammar, another important aspect of writing.
However, this has greatly hindered our writing in the professional standpoint. With the ability to write simple phrases with poor grammar and quick, abbreviated words, casual writing established itself as another problem for individuals. In some instances, texting has been constantly used incorrectly where one friend told Truus that he “CANT BELIEVE U PUT APOSTROPHE IN HAIRDRESSERS”(Truss 496). During the text, he emphasized on the apostrophe in hairdressers. Although using an apostrophe is unnecessary, it is certainly important in a professional career. Even throughout the text, he did not write out you, but instead wrote it as an “U”. As a result, this short message can carry over to his writing and may appear in future resume and cover letter from habit. Even with the constant reminders to write correctly, individuals continue to write in short messages as they have grown slothful to write longer text. Even then, these habits carry over to their work and as depicted in Wiens’s company, individuals “can’t distinguish between “to” and “too” (Wiens 500). Due to an overuse of writing short texts, employers cannot distinguish simple phrases that would be otherwise taught in an elementary school class. Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
God, I hate narrative essays. You have to write about your own personal experiences and expect to get a three-page paper out of it. I have no events in my life that would fit a three-page paper. The events in my life are either to foggy in my mind, are too insignificant in my mind to fit a three-page paper, or are too big and broad to be able to fit in an essay and would need a 500-page book to explain. I do far better at other kinds of essays than narratives, such as the persuasive paper. I look forward to those kinds of essays more than I look forward at all to doing any more narrative essays. In, the mean time, however, I am going to try to get James to get off the Internet. Maybe then I may have a better narrative topic. I hate narrative essays anyway.
Initially, my writing was plagued by a series of fundamental issues that compromised my ability to effectively organize ideas and emphasize the primary purpose of a piece of writing. These issues included extensive grammar errors, primarily comma splices, as well as excessive use of language that distorted from the message or explanation I was aiming to convey. I would have described my early writing to be as dull as dishwater. My writing was convoluted, lacking adequate structure and sophisticated word choice.
Since the beginning of the semester, the English language has been a continuous struggle for me to grasp and comprehend. Due to my parents having no prior knowledge of the language, my only source of learning was based off of entertainment medias such as the television, radio and video games. However, ever since the start of the semester in August, my knowledge in the English language has improved over the course of the semester. Concepts such as the adherence to MLA style format, citing specific evidence and even using reader-friendly words are all techniques I have developed and mastered over the course of the semester since the beginning of the semester.
Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought. One of the most substantial of these components is a transitional sentence and through this class and the writing practice it has brought me, I have learned how to properly write them.
Strunk and White’s book The Elements of Style is a small, or “little,” as Strunk liked to say, book that covers all of the biggest, most important rules within the English language. Strunk and White broke down the most common stylistic errors and explained clearly and concisely why those errors are wrong and how to fix them. This book, while incredibly short, contains an immeasurable amount of information, ranging from how to use hyphens to the correct ways to use the word nor. The Elements of Style is an incredible guide that can help students, or anyone, really, navigate the world of proper grammar and diction. Information that can completely change how you communicate with the world—change for the better, I mean—is exceedingly valuable information.

Whether it be grammatical errors, which can be a common mistake in any writing, structuring my paragraphs, giving description, and getting my ideas across in a well-mannered fashion that is fairly easy to understand. Personal narratives are without a doubt fun to write, although they may be challenging. These narratives are an opportunity to make it your own, yet still have to acquire the components of being able to interest yourself as well as the audience. I can have a grand time and still be serious about what I am working with. During my freshman year of college, I had met one of my best friends, who go by name Jill. (She lives in New Jersey and while I live in Pennsylvania) I found it to be strange that sometimes, it feels like we have grown up with one another but in reality we have only one another for four years and I couldn’t be more thankful. Dr. Shook’s critiques directed me to revise for the lack of transitional phrases between main ideas within my essay, as well as my tendency to compose run-on sentences. Accordingly, I inserted transitions that connected the major points that my essay touched upon. In order to do so, I used phrases such as “furthermore” in order to create a better flow without compromising the important ideas that were essential in regards to properly communicating the context to my audience. By commencing the process of revising my first essay, I developed the understanding that one of my shortcomings as a writer at the beginning of the semester included compiling numerous ideas into one sentence, consequently making it too “heavy.” By taking corrective action, I separated sentences that surpassed three lines into two entities.
