Over the first semester of my Composition I class, I have learned how to write various papers such as descriptive, example, definition, compare and contrast, and research. Along with learning how to write different types of essays, I have enhanced my writing skills in the past months. Three noticeable changes I have made in my writing includes condensing my ideas into more concise statements, my proofreading process, and modifying my writing process. Over the semester, I have greatly improved my writing skills. One major writing improvement I have made this semester is planning out my paper before I write it. As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. In this paper I will discuss and analyze my own writing, reflecting on the ways that my writing has improved throughout the semester.
Before I began the semester, writing papers were not my strong suit. I really did not enjoy writing because I believed it to be a difficult process. More specifically beginning a paper was extremely difficult for me. It was tough to start a paper and put my ideas in an orderly fashion to compose a decent paper. While practicing with writing techniques, I found that listing my thoughts helped me. Prewriting gave me the chance to gather all of my ideas and begin my papers quicker. I
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
Every person has their own unique way of writing which makes their writing stand out among the other people’s writing. Weather a person’s writing is full of high leveled vocabulary to a person use of complex sentences. Throughout the semester I had many times where I felt that my writing was weak at certain points or at times where my writing skills to started to improve. The major assignments and the short answer responses helped improve my skills as a writer. Even though all three major assignments helped improved my writing skills, the one that had the most effect in my writing was the report essay as it helped discover new methods while also the short answer response number 4 helped me to analysis images in an aspect that I did not know before.
As a result I believe that the progress I have made in my writing during the course of English 1B has changed my negative views of writing. As silly as it may sound to say that my fears about writing papers have been defeated, they have. Whether they are short reviews or extensive research papers, I have become more comfortable in writing. I have not only learned how to write and express myself more effectively, by organizing my critical thoughts, but most importantly I have learned that review and revision is an essential part of the writing process. This process how allowed me to grow to become a better writer. The skills I have acquired can be used for future coursework and beyond.
This semester in English 102, the curriculum requires students to adapt their writing to the college level. This level of writing is necessary to create a backbone for students as they progress and grow their writing skills in higher level classes. The course’s primary focus throughout the semester was the adapting of rhetoric strategies into papers as well as writing a comparison, a position paper, critical analysis, and finally a visual argument paper. These papers -though all very different in style- help establish the basic guidelines of writing papers for not only this class but for future English and other classes. Even though I am a Management Information Systems major and writing is not a part of the curriculum, being able to write clear and coherent pieces are necessary for a developing a strong writing style whether it be for resumes or professional works. This is something that this semester I have improved in, I am able to sit down and revise my thesis and my ideas with structured outlines, I always refer back to the Essay Outline Template that has been a helpful tool for me. I have learned to “compost” ideas, writing freely structured outlines to get the thought process going, something that saves me a great deal of time when I am constructing my full drafts. This semester, I have lost the fear to use my own voice to communicate my ideas. I have learned to utilize outside sources in a way where they simply keep the flow of my paper, and are not the main focus. I have also stopped “jumping around” throughout my papers. I now stick with one point and after a thorough discussion on it; I am able to move on to the next concept, without constantly bringing in old ideas and things that I stated earlier on in the paper. During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. My experiences with academic writing have been everywhere from good to bad. I started high school with very little knowledge when it comes to writing, and unfortunately ended high school around the same place I began. I acquired a few important grammar skills, however that was the extent of any knowledge gained in high school. Fortunately, I had an excellent experience last semester in English 1301 taught by a South Plains College professor and I was able to expand my writing skills and gain confidence in my ability to write. We wrote five major essays; that of which included, a compare and contrast essay, three definition essays, and an argumentative essay. The longer I was in the class and the more assignments I completed, the more I matured as a writer and I soon felt confident in my skills.
Throughout the semester, my writing and thought towards writing has changed drastically. In my previous writing composition class, I didn’t have a passion for writing. The topics that we were assigned in WRC 1013 didn’t interest me nor relate to anything that was going on in the world. This all changed when I took this course. Because of the flexibility in this course to pick your own topics of essays assigned, I was finally able to write about something that I found interesting. Looking back from the beginning of the semester, I have become more educated when it comes to citing other authors’ work, page formatting with Modern Language Association, and brainstorming before writing a paper. Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
While looking back at my first semester in English Composition 1, I am surprised by how much I actually learned and how much I developed the writing skills I already had. The rough drafts and group work we did helped me a lot during the four papers we wrote. My portfolio of the semester includes four pieces of writing and this reflective essay. The four assignments we had were a culture description, observation, comparison-contrast, and a persuasive essay. During the semester and the papers we wrote, I found out some things that I struggled with but also found that I’m pretty good at certain aspects of writing. Throughout the four essays we wrote I struggled with detail, sentence variety, but did well with apostrophes.
Growing up we are always encouraged to go and pursue our dreams, but what if we didn't know what dream we wanted to pursue? Going into my first semester of community college, I didn’t have a clue on what I wanted to study. I had an interest in computers, so I registered for an introductory course in computer science. I don’t know if it was the professor or the general atmosphere of the class, but I was immediately hooked. I found myself wanting to learn more about the subject. I’ve read the recommended books, watched videos, and had discussions with my professor about what I learned in class. I couldn’t get enough.
There are many important elements that are critical to creating a well-written paper. It is important for all writers to have a good understanding of these key learning goals. By the end of English Composition I at The University of Akron, all students should learn to the best of their ability, how to use these goals when writing. The drafting process, good paper structure, audience, constructing a thesis, using outside materials, analyzing, and using proper grammar are the goals that I developed in my writings throughout the semester. Most of these goals I believe I improved on tremendously, other goals I think I could use more practice. These writing elements are all very helpful in a writer’s process of creating a good paper.
